This will be the first postseason Tommie-Johnnie game in history. Given it's the playoffs, I'm sure outsiders are checking out this MIAC board. Perhaps a board veteran could help educate them by answering the following multiple choice question:

It's game day and we're approaching kickoff. The Johnies are out in force on the beautiful campus of the University of St. Thomas, one of the nation's finest Catholic universities. The Johnnies are pumped and ready to go. Their school spirit is climaxing after a weeklong, wall-to-wall Johnnie __________?

A. Massage Party
B. Hand-holding Session
C. Circle J--k
D. Smokefest
E. None of the Above.

While the Tommies and head coach Caruso are well on their way to hand holding and embracing each other in the cosmopolitan ways found at the corner of Cretin & Summit the Johnnies are actually preparing for a football game.
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

Gig Harbor Cat

Johnnie's are a +7 in this one.  They get up early and their D gets it done.  Sending some west coast salt for their Salty D.

Phone it in, boys
Its in the bank

Besides its too early to go ice fishing  ;)

What about this quote from the Strib: ""We're not real into style points,'' Caruso said.

I wonder who he's trying to convince win that line. When you do a behind-the-back pass for a two-point conversion in a blowout against massively inferior competition, then it looks like style points are very important to you.

My guess: the sting of the criticism he must have received from that play calling has him trying to reset the F.A.M.I.L.Y. values they hold important at UST(d).  I say that's a smart move. Nothing like trying to change your team's motivations during the post season.

Just FYI to all of the folks up in arms: What Caruso actually said was, shall we say, joined in progress in the Strib story. It went something like this: 'This is the playoffs, and in the playoffs, we're not real into style points.'

Pat, please tell Glenn & his family hello during Thanksgiving dinner on Thursday.

Sorry to bust on the Johnnie fan narrative but that's what he actually said. Guess I'll include the audio in the podcast for you.

Sounds great. Be sure you also include the audio from your follow up question, "style points Glenn, you must admit you have an interest in those", as well as his answer.

Now I remember why I blocked you on Twitter.

You shared a lesson w/ us on how the media uses partial quotes at times. I'm assuming the Strib did it for a word count, not to misquote Glenn. I was simply suggesting you probably covered off on the obvious follow up question. From your response I guess you didn't.

Yeah, because in real life it doesn't work that way -- it was the beginning of a long answer and also, in real life, it's not really a good idea to ask questions on behalf of disgruntled fans. :)

I noted the irony and filed it away for the next time I'm covering a game in which there actually are style points, rather than use a postgame news conference to ask about a previous game. (Might sound good on Twitter or in a message board, but bad form in real life.)

Beginning of a long answer of which the major news outlet of the market tought was important enough to include and you remembered.

And I'm only gruntled, no dis here, my team is in a solid place. Couldn't be happier w/ Gary and where he has the program.

Hey, Pat, I thought you were saying Rube doctored the quote.  I just checked the article at the Trib and realise you're saying the Strib presented the quote badly.  This is exactly what it says, in context:

The Tommies scored three touchdowns in the final 9 minutes, 58 seconds of the second quarter for a 21-0 halftime lead. After La Verne (8-2) cut it to 21-7 early in the third quarter, St. Thomas answered with 22 consecutive points.

"We're not real into style points,'' Caruso said. "If that means it doesn't look pretty when we start the game, so be it.

"It's about accomplishing what you need to do to move on to the next round. We did that, and I'm proud of how we responded.''

La Verne coach Chris Krich was proud of his team, too. The Leopards, making their first NCAA playoff appearance since 1994, traded the balmy 80-degree weather of their campus near Los Angeles for a 23-degree day Saturday with a wind chill of 12. Running back Travis Sparks-Jackson said it was "a cool experience'' to play on an afternoon that led an announced crowd of 1,832 to huddle under blankets and make a run on hot chocolate at the concession stand.

The quote is clearly presented in the context of Caruso explaining why it took until late in the second quarter before the Toms started spanking La Verne.  Even though there is "this is the playoffs" qualifier dropped by the Strib, I don't think it changes the context of the slow-start defense GC presented.

Unless the quote is massively different than what was reported, I think the Strib played this with a straight bat (as they say in cricket).  And our Johnnie observations are spot on.

Guess we disagree here. I thought the qualifier was important because it clearly delineates this game from the Carleton game, where style points were apparently part of the plan.

Oz - There's no need to make things up when real life regularly provides items this good.

Yeah.  I'm not happy with one reason to argue Tommies Suck.  I want two.

I think the Johnnies will pull it out in close one. Defense will score in second half.  :-*
