We get storms and it's local news. The east coast gets a winter storm and they give it a name and it dominates the national news cycle.  :P

My wife was saying this to her friends all day.

I think this is a sign the media is bored w/ the Donald.  ;D

If the national media were headquartered in Minnesota or Wisconsin rather than the east coast I suspect it wouldn't get so much attention. As for the names, I think that the Weather Channel (hq in suburban Atlanta) is responsible for that bit of hype. I've never seen anyone else use them.

The #8 Augsburg Wrestling team beat Concordia 16-15 last night in Moorhead. Came down to the third tie breaker criteria. The Cobbers are  a very good team, were ranked #4 nationally and hosted a good crowd in their gym to see this rivalry.

I'm a little late 57, I was traveling in Houston,TX this week and ribeye steak was on the lunch menu. Every time I go to Texas, I have to have steak at least once. Texas knows steak as well as their own version of barbecue, Tex-Mex and German chow. :D
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

Sounds like the left coast version of lutefisk and lefse :)

We have Netflix but my wife and I never watch it. Then I read the discussion on here about "Making A Murderer" and now we are through the first few episodes.

3 thoughts:

A) I'm glad I live on the west side of the state.
B) There is some serious in-breeding going on in Manitowoc County.
C) An orthodontist could make a fortune over there.

Other than that, I have no idea if this guy is guilty or not yet.

I will probably never watch it but I'll bet Shirley Temple on TCM is better.  :)

My wife was saying this to her friends all day.

I'm typing this from South Africa so I'm not in NYC dealing with the snow. But in defense of us elite East Coasters -- even those of us born and bred in flyover country -- who get all the media attention...over-the-top media coverage is perfectly defensible. I've seen estimates that the storm's affecting 50 million people, possibly up to 75.

Now say there's a storm that shuts down the Dakotas, Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. Montana and Nebraska, too. That's affecting, what, 19, 20 million? It's sort of like the old complaints we always got to the sports department at the newspaper. Why are you giving so much coverage to: NDSU football, Moorhead hockey, Fargo North boys basketball, etc., and not covering the cross country team/gymnastics/swimming/wrestling team with the same resources? Because more people are affected by the former and more people go to them. "We get snowstorms too!" is the weather equivalent of "these kids practice hard too!"

Also, this isn't exactly your run-of-the-mill storm. NYC alone could get 20-30 inches. The biggest city in the country being totally shut down is national news that more people are going to care about than when Highway 14 is shut down between Janesville (Minnesota version) and Mankato. Plus, logistically, yes, much of the national media is on the coast so they are going to "localize" it more when it's in their backyard. But again, it's not just a matter of building something out of nothing, in this case anyway. Other times, sure.

Not to mention, when an arctic freeze or whatever hits Minnesota, upper Midwest, it gets plenty of attention. Look at people spitting and the saliva freezing in midair!

I do think naming snowstorms is weird.

My point wasn't that our snowstorms deserved more attention it's that east coast storms deserve less than 3-4 days of national news. The point that 50 million people are more important than our 20 million is the self importance we see. Our storms are well overblown locally. East coast storms are overblown nationally.  Hunker down, dig out and carry on!

If you're still in SA at the end of Feb, sfury, then you can catch the opening round of the Super 12 Rugby. Good viewing.

And England is touring South Africa in the cricket. Theres a five-day test match underway right now. Boring as hell, I say, but one day of cricket is interesting enough.
