IIAC and CCIW non-conference foes - It's really nice to see the mix-up playing other teams from the upper mid-west.

It just dawned on me that no one has mentioned anything about Caruso being named douchebag of the year. Let me be the first on here to congratulate Caruso.

Is it because STU fans figured it was a foregone conclusion and didn't think it was worth mentioning here? I thought for sure SJU fans would have something to say about it or maybe it is their way of dissing Caruso by ignoring his accomplishment.

Dammit. So much for the silent treatment.

So which is the more meaningful award?
-AFCA D3 Coach of the Year
-Sharing Co-Coach of the Year with a coach that led his team to a 7-3 mark and a 3rd place finish in the league.

Back to movies.

I recommend The Big Short. I still don't quite get what the deal was, but I feel that while being entertained, I also got a little smarter.

13 Hours was really intense. I  felt my heart rate rose quite a bit. If you like that thrill ride, you'll like this. It also is an important film to see the perspective of those who were there.

13 Hours rates 59% from critics and 88% from the viewing public on Rotten Tomatoes.

Anybody watching The Affair series on Showtime or Trophy Kids on Netflix?
Both are equally horrific in their own way.

Trophy Kids aka Overbearing Parents

Seems normal to me. You should see my kids. Now THEY are champions!

I enjoyed 13 Hours. It was exactly what I expect from a Michael Bay film. Plenty of intense action.

Recently I've been disappointed by some movies I've gone to. First there was the new James Bond movie, then the third sequel to the Hunger Games and finally the new Star Wars.  I enjoyed all three but I didn't think any of them reached the level of their predecessors.

I certainly agree on the new Star Wars movie.   While they paid appropriate homage to the originals, they were not nearly as creative as they needed to be and the storyline was overly contrived.   But, really what was I hoping for?  It is so dangerous to try to do this type of sequel of what is an iconic series of movies.

I love 2 of the 3 original Star Wars movies. Return of the Jedi and the three prequels just irritate me. The new one was entertaining. I will go out on a limb and say if you look at the original 3, they really aren't that great a movie story line. The first one? Innovative setting, special effects masterpiece. But the story? Hidden prince, hidden powers, wise master to unlock it all. That's as old as the story of King Arthur. Now add in well used lovable rogue. Rescue the princess, defeat the bad guy with unfathomable abilities that randomly appear (sure, Luke absolutely knows instinctively how to pilot an X-Wing! Fighter planes don't take any kind of training that can't be doled out in a few rushed hours of a lecture when everyone else has better things to do like try and get ready for the planet killing weapon) Lovable rogue redeems himself.

Really? That plot is old. The setting was new, but the story line was as cliche as it gets. Empire is neat. The bad guys actually win. The good guys f up all over the place. The good guys practically switch roles. Luke is a turd. Hahn has the self-sacrifice. Leia is still fundamentally useless. The bad guys come out ahead.

Don't get me started on Jedi. Hmmm... what if we made Luke and Leia brother and sister so we can end the love triangle with no hurt feelings and everyone loving on each other? Sure... that makes sense. Just ignore that now cringe worthy kiss in Empire. So, for brother and sister, we hid one in a desert wasteland with dirt (water?) poor relatives that just happened to have one of the 2 last Jedis around but not at all interested in the son of his great evil apprentice. And we'll hide the other one... with royalty! Living the good life and learning everything she needs to know about the galaxy except there is no one around to teach her the mystical force she probably inherited. Yeah... that makes sense. Good for them both, right?

Anyway, the point is, only one of these movies really had anything approaching an innovative plot. The rest was either cliche or ridiculously made up on the fly to keep the story lines moving along. The new one did nothing to hurt or harm the past movies. It was solid entertainment, which, when looking back, is all you can really expect from the first three. The prequels... terrible. Don't get me started on Padme robbing the cradle, quite literally, or differential aging...

Football anyone????

AFCA Coach of the Year? Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year? USA III Football Coach of the Year? Bob's Blog Coach of the Year? You can see what's under the Awards menu and pretty easily figure out why it's there. But no -- we don't recognize anyone else's awards. (And I don't think the AFCA publishes our awards, and that's fine, too.)

But I did find this article in the archives from a couple of years ago.  ;)

January 6, 2014
UMHB's Pete Fredenburg named Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year
