Frank has a few SJU transfer updates in the SC Times:

QuoteIn addition to Jackson Erdmann, the former standout Rosemount quarterback who has transferred to St. John's after redshirting at Penn State as a freshman last season, several other players are also enrolled in school this semester and plan to play for the Johnnies next fall.

They are Luke Kelvington, a transfer from St. Cloud State; Adam Essler, a transfer from Concordia-Moorhead; and Derek McLaughlin, a transfer from Minnesota-Duluth.

Kelvington is a former standout at Foley who spent the past two seasons with the Huskies, redshirting in the fall of 2014. He said he intends to run track and play football in Collegeville.

"I just came to the decision that this was the right move for me," said Kelvington. He was a Times All-Area pick who rushed for 1,254 yards and 20 touchdowns as a senior at Foley in 2013 and took part in the state all-star game the following summer.

"I loved the guys at St. Cloud State and I loved the coaching staff. But I felt like I needed to make a change for me."

Essler, meanwhile, saw action in all 10 games with the Cobbers last season after redshirting at Minnesota-Duluth in 2014. He said he originally transferred to Concordia because the school had his major at the time. But when he switched majors, St. John's felt like a better fit.

His older brother Jake played for the Johnnies and is now a graduate assistant at Minnesota-Duluth. His father Dan is the head coach at New London-Spicer and was diagnosed with kidney cancer last year. But Essler said his father is making a full recovery after surgery last fall.

"He's doing really well," said Essler, who had 33 carries for 183 yards at Concordia last fall. "So that wasn't really a factor in my decision. Obviously, if health concerns come up again, it will be nice to be closer to home. But everything is looking really good for him after surgery."

Also, there is confirmation of the Canada trip, though few details (and no mention of a separate trip to Italy  :P )

For the record, I too liked Jedi the least of the original trilogy but for different reasons. Mainly because of the shmaltz of the Ewoks and the hair on this guy.

Hey all. Offseason, slower time, time to chat about beer and weather and rugby. So...some offseason shameless plugging...

On February 23, Flatiron Books will publish my book Rise and Fire: The Origins, Science, and Evolution of the Jump Shot--And How It Transformed Basketball Forever.

The title makes the subject obvious, but a bit more info...

Basically I trace the shot from the early pioneers in the 1930s to today's sharpshooters like Steph Curry, and how at all stages of the game's evolution, the jump shot led the way. It's a narrative history with a lot of detours into basketball history. And it doesn't focus on just one level of ball. There are NBA legends and guys who never played beyond high school. There's Iowa 6-on-6 girls basketball stories and a history of shooter's gyms. I talked to dozens of the best shooters ever, among them, Jerry West. And, not to totally spoil it, but St. Thomas gets a mention in the book!

It will be available in bookstores and online everywhere on Feb. 23 but is also available for preorder.

And for some early reviews, plus blurbs from folks like Will Leitch and Coach K:

Thanks for reading and if you do get a chance to read the book, perhaps while enjoying a cold craft beer, hope you enjoy.

Nice. I like it. And yes, as a child of the late 70s I definitely grew up with Star Wars and they were re-released when I was in college, kind of a fertile time for reliving it. I've probably seen the original movies more than is healthy (though I haven't seen the originals in many years and didn't re-buy after getting rid of the VHS player and tapes).

OzJohnnie

Wow. Book published. Congratulations, sfury.

NBA sharpshooter Kyle Korver's mom once scored something like 72 points in one of those crazy 6 on 6 Iowa girls games.

Doh!  And final edits have already been sent to the printer!  Thanks a lot hazzben.

Haha. No, I was aware of her so no fear of oversight, although she didn't make the book! But she's definitely a big part of one of the great hoops families.

Interesting on Essler. Will be his 3rd school/team in three years of college. Usually that is a pretty major red flag.

If there were a secondary trip I would think they would go to Germany considering the roots of SJU and Coach Fasching.

These pictures were taken last week a block or so south of St. Clair in St. Paul.  Between Randolph and St. Clair Avenue and to the west of Snelling.  Just a couple blocks from Macalester College.

Sheesh. That's a big fella for the middle of the St Paul metro. I wonder where he normally hangs out?  It's quite a ways to a big wooded area.

According to Coach Horan's twitter account, it appears things are going well up in Moorhead: https://twitter.com/CoachTerryHoran/with_replies

Not sure who has committed to CC since none of their recruits were mentioned by name, but I'm curious to find out who this "top ranked recruit" is.

UST picked up a few additional recruits the past few days:

Nick Raddatz, DB, Prior Lake: https://twitter.com/raddatz2334

Alex Taylor, LB, Glenbard North, Ill: https://twitter.com/alextaylor5252

Grant Hemze, LB, Maple Grove: https://twitter.com/GrantHemze

Alex Zwaschka, DE, St. Thomas Academy: https://twitter.com/zwaschka_alex

And this guy committed to SJU:

Cassius Pumphrey, LB, Lakeside HS, WA: https://twitter.com/cassius_p19/status/691789168473694214

National signing day is right around the corner. Should be interesting to see how things shake out.

I bet you wrote this post just the right way to make duffman's head explode.  And you did it on purpose.  Along with using all the glue.
