I don't disagree with the UMD selection for MN. I was on the UMD team for spring ball and fall camp, saw the writing on the wall and transferred to Augsburg. That was/is a rock solid program with a great tradition and fan base throughout northern MN. I can say that I played for UMD and also played against SJU and UST, and the rest of the MIAC and UMD is the right choice. Malosky is/was greater than Gagliardi in terms of status up there. For Malosky losing was not an option, it was a matter of life and death it seemed. UMD will have each Duluth TV station covering the home games and the spring game. I recall watching game films of SJU vs UMD during camp and Malosky was very respectful of Gagliardi and SJU but he had to make a point of it. We needed to be told this. If Mo said so, it was true. Geographically speaking I think UMD and the NSIC cover a larger chunk of MN than the MIAC.

You guys know I am a MIAC guy but I am just calling it like I see it.

Like Oz, I couldn't care less about these "best of" lists. But I have had the privilege of knowing both men and despite some major differences in style, they shared some values that made them and their programs exceptional. I was lucky to have both as neighbors and eventually got to know Mo better than I knew John.

Both were also outstanding family men.

And that 1980? UMD team that went 10-0 but was passed over for the d2 playoffs ... incredible squad. A lot of respect for both men.

Ok Oz, I'll chime in. Just finished the 8th segment of "Making a Murderer" and it has been better than I expected. I'll give a full review as soon as me and the Mrs. watch the final two episodes.

That's a good thing. I hope it's still neon and not some imitation to screen.

Looks like there's some budget issues at Concordia. I have some friends that coach over there too who say money is tight and getting tighter.

That's a shame.  It's nice having a group of strong schools keeping the athletics strong.

That being said, the squeeze is surely on for colleges. Minnesota graduates about 60k students from high school every year and has about 290k students in undergraduate universities.  Roughly that means every single HS grad goes to college and we still pick up 10k others like out state or older students.  Of course, not every HS grad goes to college so the others is even bigger.

It could be argued quite effectively that there is a large over supply of college places in the state. Someone has to feel the pinch.

Not feeling the pinch down in Alabama https://twitter.com/nbcsn/status/692384501574602753

As someone who grew up in essentially an FBS college football wasteland (NJ), lived in VA and FL where college football was relatively big, but now live in AL, I can tell you that you can't understand it unless you grew up here. There is an insanity tied to certain SEC schools that is simply terrifying. Nothing is too much to spend to win and there are always more donors and money men willing to shell out.

Everything can and will be excused or justified for winning.

Well, NDSU's president has made no bones about trying to increase enrollment by 25% which is ridiculous considering they have UND to compete with for students. But NDSU has gone from the "cow college on the north end of Fargo" to a major player. Their athletic success has something to do with it sure, but they've invaded downtown Fargo with their new architectural campus and a few other buildings. Everything is NDSU or Bison related in town. MSU-Moorhead has had to make some cuts and are not doing their 4th of July celebraish for the first time in 40 years as well. Just wondering now that NDSU has raised their national profile so much that if parents are saying, "Your resume will look just fine with NDSU on it" and saving their $.

Yeah, it's a story that has been building for 20 years. There is so much easy money available for college that everyone is going and schools are spending like oil rig workers after three weeks at sea (until the run out of cash and find themselves drunk and penniless).  Of course, people are paying more and more for a decreasingly valuable commodity. It will come to a head at some point.

I wish I knew how the education game would break (as I would invest a lot of money in the break) but I wouldn't be surprised to see some sort of JUCO-like break from the major universities. A Harvard law degree in three or four years out of high school. Heck, it's only four years now to put all those extra-courses into a liberal education when the goals of the well-rounded classically educated were abandoned 40 years ago.  Who studies Latin anymore just because?

We had a visit at St.Olaf last year for my oldest daughter who was considering that school. The food was excellent. The students all appeared to be from Edina so I am sure they expect  the best.
