This might just give Duff a heart attack, but I think it is cool. When students are awarded one of our premier academic scholarships, we do a signing day for them when they commit to attend UO. There is all this hoopla for athletes, why not for scholars (you know... with us being a institution of higher education and all).

I'm wondering when Chicago Tommie will get around to telling us about 'Moody Tongue'.  :)

I am sitting at my desk with a level 4.  Stupid, stupid, stupid.

It's just turned 9am and I already feel like I've been sitting here for 12 hours.

Context please - what in the world is a level 4?

I don't like it.  Keep in mind I work at a high school in the metro area of the Twin Cities.  The last few years we have had a number of D3 football players participate in "Signing Day" and most of them never even were actually on a roster, played a down, or let alone made it through an entire season or four years.  This year we had a kid sign to play with RCTC.   ???  ::) ???

Greetings from Peru. I just returned back to my hotel from Machu Picchu. It was amazing. In any event, I did some digging and found a few kids who will be playing the in MIAC next season.

A reliable source (a former Gopher and NFL o-lineman) has told me that SJU got a really good one in Greenheck.
From what I've seen SJU looks to bringing in a number of o-linemen in the 6'-'6'2" and 270-285 lb range.  Let's hope a few of these big fellas pan out.

I must not have been clear. These are signing days for kids getting academic scholarships. As you pointed out, kids that play sports get all the attention. The UO scholarship signing days are a way of celebrating brilliant kids that might just change the world!

No, you were perfectly clear.  Screw the smarty pants, I say.  Let the nerds enjoy their puny little success in quiet like good moppets.

In Hawthorn news (after taking out my Level 4 weariness on nameless, defenseless high-achieving Oregonians), it's only two weeks until the opening pre-season game against Carlton.  Reports out of Waverley are that the Hawks are looking hard and tight in preparation for their attempt at four in a row.

What about those that are both??? :)

I remember SJU and a few other schools that I looked at that had a fair amount of hoopla over their "elite" academic scholarships (at SJU, it was the Regent's Scholarship), which was cool, but it was recognition at the university and not my high school.  I have no problem with recognition for academic or athletic achievement.  D3 differs from D1 and D2, though, in many ways.  There's no need for the D3 recruit to be like his/her D1/D2 counterparts by participating in a formal signing day.  As a side note, I think all signing days are a bit ridiculous.

Signing days: My brother still lives near the hometown that we grew up in and one of his buddies has a son who was an above average high school football player with size, speed and pretty decent skill. The local high school that we all attended had a big hoopla signing day for this kid his Sr. year when he accepted a football scholarship to Bemidji State, not exactly the kings of the D2 world, but a scholarship none the less. Fast forward and the kid red shirted his Freshman year, then there were some coaching changes. The kid never played a down and transferred to St. Cloud State to be closer to home and that was the end of his football career. Big hype at your high school does not guarantee success later in life.

National signing day at D3. Oh brother. http://www.kare11.com/entertainment/television/programs/breaking-the-news/diii-bound-athletes-should-have-signing-day-but-not-all-get-it/32652692

Hmm...kind of a douche move to leave the DIII kids out, but at the same time, (and understandably as she is probably only 17/18 years old) not worth getting all bent out of shape about it, you're playing DIII because sports are fun, not to finance your education (like a lot of D1 and D2 kids). Granted, a lot (most) of D1 and D2 kids under scholarship are enjoying themselves, but a lot have no choice, play this sport or no education for you.

The only kids getting full rides are the D1 kids in football, men's and women's basketball, women's volleyball, women's tennis and women's gymnastics.  Everybody else in D1 and everyone in D2 gets partial scholarships and most will have to have to finance their way through college.  In many cases they might have been able to find D3 schools they could have gone to more cheaply.  Drawing the line at D3 probably perpetuates the myths of all scholarships being equal, as if a volleyball scholarship to the U is any anyway equal to a track scholarship to Winona State.  We might have fewer crazy sports parents if they knew how few full scholarships were available.

So what does it take for student athletes to get substantial academic scholarships at the various MIAC schools? By way of example, I think the median ACT/GPA for matriculants at UST is roughly 27/3.6 nowadays. If UST can justifiably provide substantial academic scholarships to those over the median (an endowment for scholarships having been a major part of the last capital campaign), can't they stack the team with academically competitive players who might have gone DII with a partial scholarship? People often complain that UST has an unfair advantage with its new facilities, but maybe the large scholarship endowment is the more impactful advantage.

Something I don't like about D3 kids taking part in signing day is that many D3 kids don't even know if they'll be able to attend the D3 they want because aid packages aren't provided until April.  Yeah, schools can give estimates but potential students don't know until they get the actual numbers.  So while there are some D3'ers that participate on singing day I think many D3 kids get excluded until they know about financial aid.
