Rapids are up against Eden Prarie in the hockey semi-finals. I had forgotten just how successful GR had been, my high school years being just at the tail of a long hot streak. This is their 12 semi in 15 trips to state and they are 8-3 in their previous 11 semifinals. 3-5 in the state championship game.

The Prarie dogs are going down.

The top 4 seeds are left in 2A and yes, Grand Rapids really was a machine for awhile. State champs in 1975, 1976 and 1980. I believe Bill Baker of Gopher and "Miracle on Ice" Olympic fame played there. They took 2nd in 1978 and 3rd place in 1974 and 1977.

Over in 1A our boys from Hermantown are in the championship game, again, and this just might be the year they get it done.

I was in 6th grade home room with Mary Baker, Bill's little sister, and he brought in his gold medal and a hockey stick signed by all the players for us to have a look at.

Also, I'm watching Wayzata v Stillwater right now at prep45.com. Waiting for the Rapids in 30 minutes. With it projected up on the big screen via appleTV it's just like I'm watching regular television.

Oz, I think your tweet has to have #tourney16 to get on TV.

Bummer.

And Rapids lost to boot.

That Middlestadt kid for Eden Prairie is a talent and hard to stop. Will be a great championship with Wayzata.

And our boys from Hermantown going against another private school in the finals. Will the nightmare end today?

A fringe player for the Gold Coast Suns is nicknamed 'The Cannon'.  Here he is launching an 80 meter drop punt for goal in a preseason game over the weekend.  It is a monster kick.

(A drop punt is the backwards spinning kick footy players use as it is most accurate through the air.  The 'torp' which the announcers refer to is short for torpedo, a spiral kick which gets greater distance as the cost of accuracy.)

This game of yours really has some serious kickers. Makes me wonder why more of the kickers in the NFL are not punting like this occasionally. That's an 87 yd punt in the air.

There's a few things, the ball is a little bigger and although oblong, it's built for kicking, not throwing. And the players get a run up, etc.

But there are about three Aussies punting in the NFL and a lot of them on punting scholarships.  It's like the South America pipeline for place kickers in the 80's.

After Michael Bennett arrived with the Chargers years ago I noticed that even the non-Aussie punters started to adopt the drop punt in certain situations, usually once the offense crossed the 50 but failed to advance into field goal range. I remember the first time I saw Bennett use it my reaction was "wait, was that what I thought it was".

The Johnnie's and Auggies have just finished thier second overtime tied 4-4 for the MIAC hockey championship. They hit the ice again after the break to start their sixth period of the evening. There will be some tired boys tomorrow.

Tough ending for the Jays....goalie got himself out of position...but he made about 55 stops or more in the match.

Yes I agree, the SJU goalie was excellent all game until the end. Can't blame him though, I wondered which goalie would make a mistake after 4 hours of hockey. Saxton Soley, that kid is tough.

The Auggies are going to the NCAA Tournament! Congrats Augsburg Hockey!
