I look forward to GAC's attempt to unseat UST for second place in the MIAC. That mid-80's revival is just around the corner. We've been fearing it for years. 30 to be exact.
I think you should be more concerned with your own spot in the standings than what happens to UST.  I wouldn't be surprised if the Johnnies loose to one or more of the next 3 in the conference rankings.

Oh, boy.  This'll be an interesting season!

At the risk of sounding like as a UST fan running around like a Johnnie fanboy, I don't really see any evidence of SJU sliding. Maybe Haugen's selling something fierce, but I dont see it right now. Since Fasching's arrival SJU has climbed the ladder. Recruiting appears to have picked up and is competitive with UST. Also note, that last year they were the most physical and competitive team UST faced until the Stagg Bowl. SJU lost many key pieces off last years team, but I have trouble seeing a big drop off. This was a top 8 team in the country last year.

The biggest unknown for most the top half of the conference is who lines up behind center and what they will get out of them. There are appears to be some highly touted replacements, but you dont really know what you have until they take the role on.

Your second para is the big excitement for the season with two D1 transfer into the conference (but don't forget this ain't D1!). I hope they are both superstars. How hot will the rivalry get then?

I would tend to agree with that...UST will be hitting on all cylinders right away, as long as Roberts is healthy, I'm guessing, and while SJU may take a couple of games to hit their stride, I think they'll be back at or above last year's level pretty quickly.  Sura will clearly (duh) be a big hole, but they seem to have the talent to figure things out, and it's not like they are replacing a superstar at QB.

I'd agree with BU / CORD at the 3 spot...maybe with a lean towards CORD since their QB situation is a bit more solidified as compared to Bethel's.  I think BU will improve over last year, but is likely another year out from getting into serious conference title contention.  Gusties lost their QB to graduation, right?  He was a big part of their success, so I think they slip out of the race for 3rd.

As it is the off season, I will mention that the Mrs. and I just returned from a houseboat trip on the Mississippi with 5 other couples.  We had a great time exploring the river.  Of course, way too much booze was consumed, as well.

Well now. Unless the weekend resulted in one of the couples fighting, the DNR writing up the occupants or the houseboat going all Titanic, then it sounds like the appropriate amount of booze was consumed.  8-)

Good point!  There was a surprising lack of drama.  Thankfully.

Say what you will about Nick Martin, but he did lead all of D3 last year in pass efficiency.  He may have not been a major gunslinger, but with Sura, SJU didn't need him to be.  He'll be missed.

Absolutely not ripping him.  Rather, pointing out that he wasn't a guy that SJU was counting on to go out and make a bunch of big plays to drive their offense. (Like Erik Peterson for BU, for example, leading to their struggles last year)

He was certainly Mr. Reliable at the spot, but, at least from an outsider's perspective, it doesn't seem like he'll be a "huge" hole to fill.

Oz, I'm disappointed in your attention to detail this past off season. Haven't you been following along with Tom Thumb's Twitter string on the latest "signings" of stalwart high school graduates and the transfer of D1 talent flocking to Summit & Cretin.
The Tom Cats have not just one, but two...count them two D1 QB's coming to camp in a few short weeks. The latest lad hails from Illinois where he was the Gatorade Player of the Year. He red shirted at Southern Mississippi (you've heard of Brett Favre down under haven't you?) after a year in Hattiesburg he couldn't help but wonder how many of these stories about Tommie Girls are true and how many are just urban legends. So, an embarrassment of riches once again for the Tom Cats. So now you know....and you got that going for you.... which is nice....
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

Makes me think that UST is not terribly confident that Perra is the answer.

What school is going to turn that kid away? Bring him in and let him compete.

@ 105;

Yes, embarrassingly, I had forgotten that UST had snuck in a second D1 QB just after a three article blitz in the Star Trib about Perra.  One of them will be playing at BU before long.

Gunga, gunga galunga.

Ha!  We'll see about that...

Tom Thumb is right, but I'm sure one of them will end up discontented and will likely leave UST or at least leave the team.  A kid who comes down from D1 to D3 isn't going to be content in a backup role, even if he's one of the F.A.M.I.L.Y.

Maybe Perra was not intended to be the answer in the present.  Nice to have him on the roster, but lots of other QB's too.

Perra will still have two years left after this year. Many are discounting Fenske in all this. He has a cannon arm, has looked very good in the game time he has had at UST. It will definitely be a battle in camp, and he will be a big part of it. My hunch is he and Perra are neck and neck.

The other issue with these transfers at SJU and UST is that they haven't seen live game action in 2-3 years. Scout team isnt a great simulation. Perra got some limited action in Big Ten play, but thats about it.

So all these QBs are gunning for the top spot at UST, but backup status doesn't necessarily mean anyone's leaving the team. These guys are all talented athletes and it isn't unheard of to have players switch positions at UST.
