Clark - the rest of the SJU speed positions might want to make their way over to the track this winter and spring. Coach Vardas doing some good things.

Great game, Johnnies.  My apologies for snoozing through the fourth quarter but I was up at 3:50am for the show.

First up, the defense was spectacular.  Fast and fierce. They spread across the field very well and kept pressure in the Saints' backfield all day.  Particular mention to Gutierrez who played cornerback like a man who had sold his soul - 3 interceptions (one a real beauty that was over the shoulder in deep one-on-one coverage) and a whole swag of tackles.

The offense also played well but had a whole lot of cobwebs to work out. Far too many execution penalties in the first half (although worst penalty was by the Johnnie D - I'm sure that will be taken care of with vigor). It was clear that cobwebs had cleared, however, when the O scored three TD's in the first three minutes and thirty seconds of the second half before the first string came out. And they had a balanced offensive effort with plenty of airtime. Erdmann looked like he will be a great man under centre for the J's while Clarke will need to hose down his feet as they were burning up the field all day.

Others will need to update the fourth quarter where the second and third strings were playing.  I was counting sheep. :)

EDIT:  Also, special mention to Taylor who took to first string running back like a guy just waiting to get a chance.

Bethel D?  Wut?

The Tommies after a slow start look to roll over UWEC.

Concordia drop a game to Jamestown against which the Cobbers were heavily favoured.

Maybe this is GAC's chance.

Bethel's run D actually looked very good. Held UD to all of 30 or so yds rushing through deep into the 4th. They've got some serious issues in the secondary. Specifically at one corner spot (I think I counted him giving up 5 TD's, 4 for what must have been over 50 yds  :o). The fact they didn't sub the guy out has to say something about their depth there.

I will say however, UD's WR's and TE were really impressive. They had a ton of speed and athleticism and their QB was throwing some dimes.

Crazy stat ... both teams ended up with exactly 734 yds of offense. Both may be tied for first in Total Offense and last in Total Defense. UD will obviously take the advantage they have in scoring O and scoring D  :P

BU:
Dzurik   32-48   415   3 TD
Bloom   16 for 115
Tusler   17 for 101   5 TD
Marquardt   9 rec  219   3 TD (also dropped one TD for another 40+)

UD:
Feckley   31-47 634   8 TD
Toomer   10 rec 297   5 TD
Duarte   4 rec 117   2 TD

It looks like UST is finding its rhythm, but the first quarter was sloppy. To be honest, I'm a little distracted by updates to the Jacob Wetterling case and the game has been relegated to background noise. Everyone's innocent until proven guilty, but if Heinrich is found to have committed this crime--abducting and murdering a child, then remaining silent for nearly 30 years while the child's family and community search for him--he's a total monster. Everyone's expressing their sadness and of course that's understandable. I think my sadness is turning into anger...

Couple kids in bed now, so I can try to focus. Having the video stream and WCCO radio feed not synced up is really messing me up.
Tommies look to be putting it together now

This might be old news around these parts but the Jays have updated their unis. I thought I noticed some extra lettering on the front of their jerseys. The last couple years they've had an SJU1 on the front shoulder pad, this year they have Saint John's across the chest.

The red face masks are new as well.

I couldn't watch the game. Although I was able to stream a bit of the first quarter. Miraculously, there is data service in De Smet, South Dakota.

Good win for the Johnnies. I look forward to seeing some of you in the Flynntown lot at homecoming. I'm eager to get my daughter hooked on SJU football (as opposed to that garbage attempt at football my wife is trying to pedal at Indiana University.)

Oofda.  Yeah, BU's D got worked over.  More accurately, the DB's got worked over.  How many times did #16 get burnt?  They must have scored 4 or 5 TD's on deep balls on the first play after kickoff.  Offense looked good, but man, they will have to tighten up that pass D.

It looks like the Auggies are going to lose to northwestern 0-14. Apparently the Auggie D only gave up about 230 yards but the O was nowhere to be found. Our inter-conference play has not gone particularly well this weekend.

Hmm ... might have overestimated Augsburg this season in Kickoff. We had them beating Northwestern.

Go K Nights

Carleton had a terrible day on offense, 4 times were given the ball in great field position and got nothing, too many field goals in the red zone.  4 turnovers created and a blocked punt on Defense should = a win!  I hope they go back to the drawing board and figure some things out!

Looks like the league is gonna be a two horse race.

Yes, Carleton has some things they need to work out (discipline being one of them) but the game itself was very entertaining.  It's nice to see that MAC improved since last year.

I had the same thought. I have to apologize for my rant earlier and calling you out on your prediction Pat.

Plain and simple:

That dog won't hunt.

Congrats to Northwestern, they are a well coached team and those facilities are top notch.
