I'm up at Trout Lake Camp at a men's retreat

Dear Art, I'm afraid you are gonna have to hand over your man card. Sorry.

I was thinking the same thing but he did mention building rockets. If the weekend also involved fighting robots and "lasers" then he maybe he's on to something.

Hmm, rockets you say. Yes I did miss that. Plus, the lake is named after a fish. After further evaluation, Art can keep his man card although on a probationary status. Full reinstatement upon blowing up a rocket in the air or catching a trout in Trout Lake.

My game impressions from the first half (I fell back asleep at halftime and woke up again to the Fasching end-of-game interview) are:

* The defense was fast, motivated and hard.  Whatever gremlin had put the boys off down in Iowa was truly exorcized.  88 total yards of offense for STO, with only about 19 yards at the half, was a dominating performance.

* The offense was tight and dangerous.  The line bullied the STO defensive trench all afternoon and the threats on offense are many and dangerous.  Erdmann throws the ball very well and with great composure.  The receiving corp are fast and open.  And the running platoon is very dependable.  Krueger showed some real speed at RB today - he may end up a fun one to watch.

* Penalties? WTF?  8 for 78 yards in just the first quarter.  Both offense and defense were making mistakes.  Put aside the asinine targeting rampage that the refs are on (destined to cause no one any happiness) and the team still made mistakes.  Eliminate those, however, and this Johnnie squad will be really dangerous.

So, the conclusion?  This coming weekend will be a hell of a game.  I can't wait.

Yeah, I wondered what kind of stir my comment would cause here - but I have been flying rockets since 1972. I am high power certified in the NAR (National Association of Rocketry) and have been involved as a team mentor in TARC (Team America Rocketry Challenge) for all 15 years its been around. A number of the teams I've mentored have gone to finals in DC and I actually had a team place fourth in the nation one year. (About 700 teams of 7 through 12 graders). And yes, I've had some spectacular fails over the years, and have witnessed many others - but that's what makes science fun. :)

Every two or three years they ask me to come in and do a build and fly session for the guys and their sons. We punched over 25 holes into the sky this afternoon, including the big one I brought along as a "demo flight". It is a high-drag pyramid that I put F or G engines into for shock and awe, as it it loud and smoky.  :) :) :) It's a real crowd pleaser at the end of the launch.

Hope I can get my man card back soon...

Raspberry, rockets. Art is a certified tinkerer, I think.

I would really like to see quality video of the targeting call that went against SJU in the first half today.  I watched it live and it didn't look like anything other than a player making a defensive play on a receiver trying to catch a ball.  It was "bang, bang" and looked like a clean hit.

When I saw it I thought he was in trouble. Not because it was a bad tackle but because they are flagging every head on collision in the secondary. I'm genuinely at a loss in thinking how a safety will ever protect the middle under this rule.  It's seems that only corners who are running with a receiver will be able to tackle with confidence in the secondary.

Being the consequences of this penalty are so high I think the miac has to allow a video review like the Iowans do. It gives the refs a chance to change a bad call on the most severe and difficult to call penalty. It's not like a guy throwing punches or taking off his helmet to get ejected. Those are pretty clear to spot actions which don't take place in the split moment if a fast moving play. They also demonstrate clear intent to break the rules. This targeting penalty, though gets awarded for a little bad luck. It's a bad rule.

Jackson Erdmann must be on track for some kind of Freshman record at SJU with 12 TD, 0 INT. and averaging 208 yards per game through 3 games. But,he doesn't play full games,he usually doesn't play the full 2nd half. Against the Oles,he was on the shelf with 4 minutes to go until half. Developing.....

Big test for the Johnnies this week. They are a strong team but Erdmann is a freshman and many of the other player are first year starters. I'm going to do my best and hold back on my insane, one-eyed Johnnie support until quarter time against the Tommies. As much as I hate to admit it, I must admit that the Tommies are one of the top three or four teams in the nation. I'm looking forward to seeing how this unit stacks up. Because I think they stack up very well.

St Cloud unfortunately made the news Down Under. The news update said "a mall in Minnesota" so I looked it up.

Frickin' unbelievable.

Got the same news here in western Colorado.
Saddened this old Johnnie.

I saw the entire tackle on this play. I was at field level on the Oles sideline. The tackle was very clean and at or below the shoulder pads. There was absolutely no "show boating" or "trying to make a statement" It was just a "LOUD" hit. The ref responded to the loudness. I saw the whole hit. I too worried they would throw a flag because  there have been a lot of flags thrown at the johnnies this year (my opinion).

Looking at the box score UST held out Jordan Roberts & Josh Parks busted off a couple of long runs. Gamesmanship of has Roberts been nursing some nagging injuries? Time will tell. This should be a very entertaining week and an entertaining game.
Go Johnnies!

Art, you not only get your man card back but a couple extra to carry around to hand out. All good on you for sharing your time with these folks and being a good natured fellow.

The innocence was gone a while ago with other tragic events like Jacob Wetterling and others. This is yet another example that the world I grew up in is gone forever.

Nobody around me at the game knew what the story with Roberts was. He took some hard hits last week against Stout, but that's just in his nature with the type of runner he is. I'm wondering if anyone caught the radio call and heard any explanation?

I know last year he was dealing with a number of nagging injuries that slowed him a bit against Wabash. They basically fully rested him during the week of practice leading up to the Linfield game and he came out with a fury.

Regardless, was nice to see some great runs by Parks and Trettel also. A good game to get J-Rob some rest and the young guys some action.
