The game was a close one today and the Tommie linemen made the difference, particularly in the first half. In terms of speed and skill, especially at QB, I think the Johnnies are even or better.  Eliminate the mistakes, the fumbles, and find a way to nutralize the Tommie line advantage at least to a draw, and this Johnnie squad can take the Tommies.

Also, VOJ.

EDIT: And the stats are up.   The Johnnies won them all but for rushing, turnovers and points off turnovers.  The line and the mistakes.  Fix those up and this is a very good Johnnie team.  Dangerous in the post season.

You left out the most important stat though - the final score. :)

Feeling cocky after finally winning a game, eh?  I'm looking forward to next weekend. ;)

I'm sure the Johnnie's will rebound nicely next weekend. I'm just hoping it's not a Monkey Stomp ™ or worse.  :-[

I agree and am going to be as positive as I can after this one. I think a lot of people had kind of given SJU up for dead in the 3rd quarter but they never stopped battling.  Subtract the two turnovers that resulted in touchdowns and the Johnnies might have won this game.  First song on WDGY radio after the post-game show was "Don't Stop Believin'"  Very proud of how the boys in red fought today!

Go Johnnies!!!

You make a really good point here. On the positive side, the Johnnies didn't give up and it was a nerve-racking 4Q, at least for this Tommie. On the negative, I was a little surprised that many Johnnies/Bennies at the game seemed to give up on the Johnnies in 3Q. I'm recovering from an injury and had to trek over to Sexton Hall to pickup some medication at halftime. I walked back toward the stadium midway through 3Q and groups of Johnnies/Bennies were streaming out of the place. Many were frustrated and spewing the typical Tommie hate narrative (Tommies Suck, Tommies are Classless, etc.). The thing that took me a little aback, though, was that more than a few were pissed off and openly hating on the Johnnies. I always thought that sort of thing didn't really happen with Johnnies fans. Maybe you guys need to send them back for more indoctination.  ;)

Hats off the UST players & staff. Turnovers are part of the game, but you can't commit 5 and expect to win against the #4 ranked team in the country.
Johnnies, clean up the mistakes & get ready for another game next week in Arden Hills. Don't sleep walk through this one or your season is over before it really began.

Go Johnnies!
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

Rev - was great to meet you and have you join us today. Sorry to hear that your injury took you out for a bit. Hope it wasn't my aggressive high-fiving that put your pain level over the top. On the other hand, I quite enjoyed having a few reasons for high-fiving.

To the Johnnies - we had a great experience at your home and were very welcomed by all of the Johnnies we encountered. I concur with your analysis that aside from the turnovers, this would be a very different game and St John's will be very tough throughout the season and possibly playoffs.

SJU couldn't get out of our own way today. Can't turn the ball over on the 2nd play of them game on what was a dead play. Team was playing uphill thoroughout. Kudos to the defense for hanging in throughout and the offense for fighting back in the 2nd half. Jays should win out or they aren't as good as we think. I'm not bummed about the prospect of losing another game - rather felt like this game was for the taking.

BTW...if any of our UST posters have a pic of the team from the 50 of UW-Eau Claire earlier this year can I get a copy?

Not sure who does it, Glenn or the OC, but they call a good game. The QB draw on 3rd & 5 stands out as an example. Good play calls at the right time.

What's the d3boards consensus on Gagliardi the Younger? I'm not sure I've ever heard any positive feedback on him, including discussions with several former players.

MIAC Football, week five, 2016

And then there were two...

I'm not sure anyone here predicted that there would be two undefeated teams at this point of the season left standing in the MIAC. And if anyone did, I'd almost guarantee they weren't thinking it would be St. Thomas and Hamline. For the coming week the Tommies host the Auggies for an almost certain win. Hamline travels down to Northfield to fight the Knights. Not sure where the game will be played with the flooding that has covered the field at Carleton, but wherever it is played, Hamline should also post another win. The Tommies and the Pipers don't meet until the 22nd of October. If Hamline can get there undefeated, there might be a little hype leading up to that game. But that's almost a month away, so we'll just wait and see what unfolds.

Some might be thinking, "Hey, what about Concordia? They are also undefeated in league play." While that may be true, they get to travel this week down to Gustavus, who just lost to Hamline this past weekend. They're kind of in a no-win situation concerning this game. If they beat the Gusties, then they are "just as good" as Hamline. If they lose to Gustavus, well, now it gets real interesting in the middle of the pack in the MIAC this year. If the Cobbers can win this week, the asterisk loss to NAIA Jamestown continues to diminish in the eyes of folks watching the standings. This is probably the game of the week in the MIAC in terms of not really being able to pick a winner before the kick-off occurs.

St. Olaf is idle this week.

That leaves St. John's traveling down to Bethel for the last game this coming week. The Royals have finally chalked up a win this year, but not many expect them to be able to pull the upset against the Johnnies this year. And the Johnnies have to keep winning if they want a chance to avenge themselves during play-offs for the loss this past week up in Collegeville. And for your information, the Johnnies and the Pipers don't meet until November 5th. What a game that could be if they both only have a loss to the Tommies.

Any chance Carleton plays on St Olaf's field this Saturday, considering St Olaf is idle and I presume their field is in decent shape?

JMM

Watching the game yesterday, Gagliardi the Younger, had the Johnnies running the ball to much into the middle of the defensive line on first and second down. Did it last year with Sura (know he was a heck of a back). I think it really hurts SJU. When they moved away from running into the line yesterday, SJU started to really click..

Was thinking the same thing and St. Olaf has the new turf field. Seems like a no brainer.

Hatred, really? Back in the day when I did my recruiting visit at Carleton, the Carleton guys seemed to like the girls at St. Olaf a whole lot more than the girls at Carleton...

I think you can chalk this up to drunk college kids at both schools.  My two sons were returning from the Milaca Mega Meet, thus making me leave the game right after SJU scored to make it 27-21 to go pick them up at the high school.  While walking to my car, I couldn't believe how many CSB/SJU and UST students were not even in the stadium.  One UST girl said to our family "We kicked your a$$ today" in front of my 3rd and 5th grader.  Nice (I am sure she is a nice girl, it was the booze talking.)  I just smiled and said it is a 6 point game now, you better get back in there, could be an exciting ending.  It didn't even matter to those I told.  I think many students see this as an opportunity to drink all day and see old friends at their rival schools, the game is secondary to many.

Adding the the R. Zimmerman comment, did anyone else notice on the frontage road near the freeway entrance the law enforcement presence? I saw numerous Stearns County Sheriff cars, State Patrol cars and the granddaddy of them all, the State Patrol bus (paddy wagon) ready to transport dozens for violators to Stearns County lock up.

Any statistics on the underage over indulgers escorted to the makeshift detox center on campus?
