While I was sitting with the wife at Sweeney's Saloon back patio on Saturday night and enjoying the fire I got to thinking about the watering holes around the MIAC.  I know where the Johnnies hang out in St. Joe (Sal's, La and the Midway).  If I'm correct the Tommies typically congregate at either Tiff's or Plum's, which is why I avoid them.  That and the rat my wife and daughter saw at Plum's.  I've lived in St. Paul for nearly 20 years and have always kind wondered where the Scots, Pipers and Auggies hang out.  Maybe the kids at Macalester have a favorite coffee shop, tea or hookah room?  The list below is only made up of schools that have a football program.  Macalester was included because maybe some day they grow a set and come back to the MIAC for football.  Please help by adding any that you might know.

St. John's:  Sal's, La and Midway
$t. Thoma$: Tiff's and Plum's
Macalester:
Hamline:
Augsburg:
Concordia:
Gustavus:  Patrick's
St. Olaf:
Carleton:
Bethel

St. John's:  Sal's, La and Midway
$t. Thoma$: Tiff's and Plum's
Macalester: Saw a Mac kid at the Groveland Tap once, he rolled his eyes when the bartender told him he didn't know how to make a 'roasted cherry bourbon smash"
Hamline: heavily and alone after losing to Carleton
Augsburg: paper bag behind a gas station
Concordia: NOT tipping at Dempsey's (according to the cocktail waitresses)

Gustavus:  Patrick's
St. Olaf: Fermented goat's milk out of a trombone
Carleton: Fermented goat's milk out of a beaker
Bethel: incognito at speakeasies
Augsburg University: 2021 MIAC Spring Football Champions

While I acknowledge that Tiff's and Plum's are the UST bars, I had never been to either until going to Plum's last fall after a game. I've still never been to Tiff's.

I know a lot of Tommies also go to Billy's on Grand and Blue Door Pub. My friend frequented the Dubliner and Groveland Tap more than anything in college, but we weren't the typical Tommies.

Is there a Johnnie bar in the St Paul/Minneapolis area?

For St. Olaf and Carleton it would be the Rueb 'N' Stein.  Although for a sinful treat try the Quarterback club or Basil's Pizza Palace

Do Oles and Carletonies actually hang out at the same bars? Gross.

Not really a bar, but Surly was founded by a Mac grad, so maybe they hang out there?!?

Didn't know that!  I toured it with some friends back when they were in the old warehouse in Brooklyn Center, on a Saturday afternoon he was the one who stood up and talked about the story of how it all started for about a 1/2 hour, then hung around the next hour or so and just chatted with everyone.  Super nice guy.  Crazy to see how successful they've been, as I heard that they're already going to double capacity at their big new brewery in Minneapolis.

In my view, some of these guys are just really interested in gear; some guys are interested in gear, but moreso they enjoy an association with the military community and other afficianados; and there are some for whom the actual gear and acceptance by certain communities are secondary. These are the types you find--true story here--outfitting themselves in full urban assault gear to wear around the neighborhood and, when questioned about the types of threats we face and why they need to go all out with the full battle rattle, respond, "Because I'm a patriot." I think some of these guys might have just a little bit of insecurity.
I just happened to be looking at a copy of the NRA store catalog because it is part of what I do; try to keep up with what NRA is doing and selling. After reading this post Rev I understand more about the tactical crowd. They remind me of bikers these days, the vast majority of Harley owners are not in a biker gang but aspire to look like a true biker gang member. I think of that pseudo biker display as Halloween for Adults and I think these tactical fanatics are probably the same type of guy in a different costume. Harmless really, no?

Thanks for your service Rev. Makes me wonder what you do in DC.

Well,  I was in the Rueb N Stein once after a camp (MSU camp IIRC) and saw Oles (coaches and some players) in one of the front rooms and some Carleton coaches and players in the back room.  I guess pigs really do fly.

Groveland Tap is probably the primary spot for Mac students.  During my time there, I also went to Blue Door and even the Nook every now and then.  There are so many good spots around that you can't really just stick to one.  Otherwise, yeah, they just head to the Dunn Bros by campus.

Surly is a little out of the way for most Mac students, but the owner invites all the graduating seniors out there in April to get drunk on him.  Which I enjoyed very much.

OK, I'll bite. It's been probably eight or so years since this happened to our hunting party. The five of us in the cabin were deer hunting about an hour North of Duluth using the Cloquet River as a water source. Our cabin was on the East bank of the river, the road side, which was a 45 minute drive through the woods to get to. There was an old row boat chained to a tree for us to use to cross the river to really get where nobody hunts. So that's the setup.

So we organize an early morning drive and only see two little does, so nobody shoots. And we're standing in the middle of nowhere just chatting and making plans for who is going to be where and when to reconnoiter and take the boat back to the cabin side of the river. When we hear something coming our way. So we stop talking and turn in the direction of the noise. The noise stops. So we start talking again and the noise gets closer and more recognizable as a hunter walking towards us. Sure enough, in just a minute or so, out pops a guy dressed to the hilt in all the latest gear with a rifle that looks like it was just taken off the show room floor. He sees us and is flabbergasted to see us wearing blue jeans and simple orange vests and hats, slinging Winchester 94s with open sights.

He hadn't seen anything all day and was starting to walk out, South of where we cross the river. He also said in all the years he has hunted the West side of the river he has never seen anybody over there. Like I alluded to earlier, he was amazed at how few "doo-dads" we had to fill our tags. He said he is lucky to get a deer every four or five years. We didn't let him know that we often filled our bonus tags too. So we parted company and wished him well. We didn't go back on that side of the river for the rest of the time we were up there that year. And once we were back in the cabin that night none of us could believe that there were guys like him in the woods – that is, the kind that buys all the latest gear to look the part, but doesn't actually fill his tag.

I don't hunt.  But I was a Marksman with both a rifle and a .45 in the Navy.

When I shoot, I aim for center mass.
