Must be a slow news week in the MIAC.

But can you imagine what this board would look like if St. Thomas had done this against St. Johns or vice versa?

Yes, why yes it is.  :D

Speaking as a former center, I think it was a bit cheeky of Augsburg to try this play. Bad pun intended.

Look, you can go out and find videos of guys opening beer bottles with their butt cheeks - holding a football suspended is not really that hard. Been there, done that. But pulling it off in a game is a hoot.

Um, bottoms up?

It was good play design and perfect timing for the call. Not sure what happens if BU isn't sold out on the punt block, but that's the beauty of when they dialed this up.

That was cool.  Hard to believe that he picked up 70 yards on it, but very cool!

You were living the lineman's dream vicariously through him weren't you Duff!

There were only 2 Royals (the 2 that were back to return the punt) that had any reasonable shot at him. There was 1 other shortly after the line of scrimmage that got close but he had 2 blockers on him.

Agree to disagree, then.  He was hit and driven back a yard or two at the 48 yard line.  He should have been tackled there.  Still a first down, but not a touchdown.

A tradition unrivaled...

His hands are definitely still on the ball.  http://www.hudl.com/v/wEnYy

Not sure I agree. If #47 is a player allowed to receive the snap, then the center holding on to the ball is moot. If #47 is not allowed to because he is inside a tackle on the line, then the illegality of the play is an incorrectly numbered guard. Could a tight-end run behind the center and take the ball? Or a declared eligible tackle? It's a trick play, and it did just what it was supposed to - fool everyone, including the officials at the time.

Perhaps more of you have other takes on it?
I am guessing the coaches had guard eligible pre-approved with at least one official and the other refs had to be brought in to the loop during the ref conference after the TD.  I am reading that if a guard is lined up 1 yd off the line of scrimmage he is eligible to receive a hand off at least, and he did line up 1 yd off the line.

We were told last night that UST senior Luke Hermann has been medically cleared to play one snap on Saturday. Young Mr. Hermann has been undergoing treatment for Hodgkin's Lymphoma.

Week 10 SOS scores:

30 .561 Carleton
37 .552 Bethel
63 .530 Augsburg
73 .525 Gustavus
100. .511 St. Thomas
103. .509 Hamline
115 .504 St. John's
181. .466 Concordia
223. .426 St. Olaf

How this week's games will affect the respective team's SOS:

Augsburg is done for the season, so there SOS will not change. Gustavus and Carleton will move towards each other, by how much is dependent on the outcome. Same for the rest of the pairings, but here is what is a bit interesting this year. With the Tommies playing the Oles, They'll probably get dragged below Hamline putting the top three teams as determined by record with below the MIAC average SOS scores, with only St. Olaf below them. I wonder if other conferences experience this same sort of thing.

It'll be interesting to see the SOS scores next week after the last game of the season.

I looked through the WIAC and it went

1. UW Oshkosh  .617
5. UW River Falls  .601
6. UW Eau Claire  .598
9. UW Platteville  .588
15. UW Whitewater  .576
31. UW Stout  .558
32. UW Stevens Point  .557
188. UW La Crosse  .463

Draw what conclusions from it you will.  The better teams are at the top and middle.  I can see why my blugolds struggled a bit this year (outside of a new staff/schemes).  Though two wins in the first year is a nice bump.  Hoping they can build back up.

On the NFL Network they have a show about fantasy football called "Fantasy Football Live." It's on weekdays for fantasy nerds such as myself. Today they did a mock Presidential Debate bit to debate fantasy football subjects in a "Saturday Night Live" kind of parody. What makes this barely relevant here is this debate was supposedly coming live from Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter Minnesota. They opened with a shot of GAC.

Only problem was when they pronounced Gustavus, Gust-ahhh-vus.

Found this:  In the National Football League (and presumably other levels), the snap is considered a backward pass and not a handoff.

If that is also true in college, and I presume it is, then a backward pass (lateral) can be received by anyone with no restrictions on where that person lines up.

Up next, the MIAC board dissects the Zapruder Film.

I would rather discuss that than discuss any more politics.  ;)  (not suggesting politics are talked about here, just in general)
