Art,
Mentioned this on in-game thread but because it's a one-point game, there's a chance that Platteville could still win if they returned it for a safety. Obviously SJU would just take a knee so it's moot. But in 2011, in the same end zone, Augsburg beat Johnnies on final play. Won 32-31, same score. About 20-30 minutes later, they clear everyone off the field and bring 11 guys from each team back for the PAT. Augsburg just took a knee. It was bizarre, but did make some type of sense.

Ah, thanx Fury. So, do we need to stick around for another half an hour?  :D

Heck of a game.  I won't be one to put this on the refs as surely both teams made their share of mistakes and UWP didn't get a defensive stop when they needed on that last drive.
As a WIACer, I will say "bank error in your favor" from the refs to the Johnnies.
The kick return, the 15 yard sideline infraction after the pick and the subjective decision on the TD all were big calls.  Fortunately the kick return call didn't prevent a UWP TD.

I didn't see the first half, but here's an interesting observation. Unless UWP got a sideline warning earlier in the game, then that should not have been a penalty. The first time it is only a warning. The next time(s) it happens, then it is a 15 yard penalty. So does anyone know if UWP got a sideline warning before that one?

Quite an ending for the Johnnies, while the Tommies advanced easily.

I was walking back to my car at UST, providing play by play updates to a bunch of folks while refreshing my phone.

Rule 8-3-2a. The ball shall be put in play by the team that scored a six-point touchdown. If a touchdown is scored during a down in which time in the fourth period expires, the try shall not be attempted unless the point(s) would affect the outcome of the game.

Should have ran the pat.

Gosh, really missed that kneeldown.

Here's the final play...I don't think he got in, however it looks like the umpire is picking the ball up in the end zone.  What's weird is he is handing the ball to the side judge as the touchdown is signaled.

I thought he got near, or near to, was pushed back but then fell forward.

Edit: after a good close look, he was initially hit short, bounced off and moved forward, and was then was pushed back.  The two refs disagreed.  The one holding the ball though he was short.  The one that signalled TD was pointing at a spot on the ground insisting he got over.

HOLY CRAP!  What a finish!  Way to fight back Johnnies and get the win.  That was a team refusing to lose.

For any interested in watching parts again, the game is still available on Stretch at this link:

Clark's TD kickoff return is at 2:00:30

The winning drive from the Johnny 15 is at 2:35:00  (Oops.  That was the disastrous second last drive which ended in an interception.  Increases the tension.)

Back to the sideline interference penalty. I think SJU benefited from the refs not knowing the rule. There was a change to this rule in 2015. So even if it was their 2nd or 3rd sideline infraction, it should have only been a 5 yard penalty. This was a big call since they were already in or close to field goal range.

From the rule book (emphasis mine):

Game Administration and Sideline Interference
While the ball is alive and during the continuing action after the ball has been declared dead:
(a) coaches, substitutes and authorized attendants in the team area may
not be between the sideline and coaching line or on the field of play

PENALTY—Administer  as  a  dead-ball  foul.    First  infraction:  Warning  for
sideline interference. No yardage penalty.

Second  and  third  infractions:  Delay  of  game  for  sideline
interference, five yards from the succeeding spot.

Fourth  and  subsequent  infractions:  Team  unsportsmanlike
conduct for sideline interference, 15 yards from the succeeding
spot.  Automatic first down for fouls by Team B if not in conflict
with other rules.
