I fondly remember the great comeback against the Oles on 2007 Homecoming.
That was an example of John's Magic rather than JohnnieMagic.
It was also my 50th Class reunion and my first opportunity to meet many now friends at Stiftungfestivity.  :D

Looking ahead, I'm concerned that Piper will almost assuredly not be playing this week (he rung his own bell pretty badly)
Would that put Max Jackson as next man up? He plays in nickel coverage.
Or Tschida (#10), who's come in with the 2's.

All controversy aside, to me the play of the game rests with Platteville's last possession:

Uwp   3-6   at Sju41   Tom Kelly pass complete to Sean Studer for 5 yards to the SJU36, out-of-bounds (Jeremy Piper).
Uwp   4-1   at Sju36   Timeout Saint John's Univ., clock 02:30.
Uwp   4-1   at Sju36   Connor Foley punt 36 yards to the SJU0, touchback.

If you go for it and get it...game over. As soon as you give your opponent the ball all bets are off. To trade that for 15-20 yards in field position seemed silly to me.

I was very surprised UWP didn't roll the dice on one of those two fourth downs.  They were having some success running the ball.  Especially the last one....with the punt it was only a net of 16 yards.  I would have run a play action pass on 4th down and tried to hit a home run and put the game out of reach.

There were a lot of what-ifs from that game.  SJU gave UW-P incredible field position on 2-3 scores (KO return that was called back, interception, snap over punter's head).  Then you have Clark taking a KO to the house.  Man, that was just an exciting game to be at.  So much fun.

Congrats to the Tommies on their win Saturday over my club, by all accounts St. Thomas was a gracious host.  Disappointed we couldn't punch in a couple scores and make the game a little more interesting, but I always like getting a good barometer for the where the program is, considering we're only playing 1 non-conference game now.

Also, while I'm congratulating Tommies, shoutout to USTBench whose North Dakota (nickname here) made the FCS playoffs for the first time.  Shame they're on the other side of the bracket from the Bison.

Robert Zimmerman

Finally got around to see the final play of the game.  Although I think he is a good blocker most of the time, Zach Sundly really wiffed on his block.  If he even gets a piece of the defender, Kruger has a much easier time getting into the end zone.  The offense and special teams will have to play much better to win on Saturday.

Working to get a Twin Cities livestream of the SJU / UWO game on Saturday...most likely at O'Gara's in St. Paul...good central location from all points north, south, east and west.  Will be finalizing Tuesday afternoon.

Is that #33?
I wouldn't want to be taking the ribbing he's getting from teammates away from the coaches and practice.

Correct.  That was quite a whiff!  He's normally a tremendous blocker, and he scored on a screen pass shortly before that, so he'll be okay.  ;)

retagent

Due to my "Stretch" going out at just the worst time, that was the first good look at the play. The angle wasn't the best to judge, but based on where he fell to the ground, it didn't look like he actually fell forward, and the ball was over the line when he fell.

That being said, the Johnnies need to play a mistake free game. Or at least limit the number and degree of those mistakes.

retagent.... the week before my Stretch went out and a screen came up telling me close to sign back in. Then all I got was an offer for the season pass.

I contacted them and told them I wasn't going to pay.

They refunded my money.  I don't believe you have any money at stake but for the future, they are receptive.

QuoteWe have refunded your purchase in good faith. However, we did not experience any technical difficulties with this broadcast. In the future, please be sure to contact us at this email address, help@stretchinternet.com, at the first sign of any problems, and our staff will be more than happy to help.

Please let us know if we can help with anything else. Thanks.

Tip of the cap to UNWSP on a playoff appearance and UMAC championship. Looks like I'm going to be spread a bit thin this playoff season, but UND's first playoff appearance as an FCS school is probably owed a personal appearance, while I potentially tune into The Friendly Neighbor should UST beat Coe.

Should UND get by Richmond/NC A&T I think Cheney, WA is as far as they go. UND is set up to keep pace with the Bison much better than they are to keep up with EWU. Still, very cool to get the first week bye and home game.

It has been a long time since I have posted on here, but several people have asked for my opinion on the last play of the SJU game given that I now am a Replay Official in FCS with DVSport.  I realize replay is only available at the Stagg Bowl for D3 as it is the only game with the correct camera angles guaranteed for a game with ESPN doing the production.

In the Big Sky Conference (FCS level) that I do replay in, the production quality varies from school to school based on who their primary production partners are.  At Montana we are fortunate to have ABC/Fox along with Root Sports do all our games.  The league and DVSport mandate that the production group provide the following camera angles in this order; Dirty Program Feed (high all 22 typically taken from the top of the home press area), High End Zone (usually taken from the North), Low End Zone (usually ground level or slightly elevated from the South), and hand helds (field level cameras for action inside the 20s, typically stationed on the home sideline).

At the FCS and FBS level all scoring plays are reviewed to confirm the call made on the field...and are therefore only used to overturn a scoring call if video evidence exists that clearly shows an error was made on the call on the field.

Having seen the video of the SJU play and knowing the call, here is what our booth team would have done... First, we would have discussed with the Referee the call on the field of Touchdown.  We would have asked who made the call; in this case Head Linesman...as the Umpire does not make that call.  From there we would have looked at all views provided in the order listed above.  From the spot on the field where the play occurred, the Program feed would likely not be close enough to help much (similar to what is available on D3 and SJU Stretch feed)...High End Zone (if set up on North) would have potentially provided view that confirmed both ball position relative to goal line and runner's knee position and forward progress....Low End Zone (if South and behind the play) would not have been of much value...Hand Helds (would have been on the West goal line/SJU sideline) and would have been obstructed from the play as the play was run toward the Platteville sideline.  With all that in mind the likely helpful views; Program and High End Zone, would have been the primary views used.  As I mentioned the Program view angle and distance from the play would have likely not provided anything definitive.  The High End Zone would have been almost definitely been the only angle that could have provided evidence to overturn the call....barring something glaring there---The ruling on the field of Touchdown Stands.  GAME OVER
