Wow...that's crazy.

Because it wasn't a DEFENSIVE penalty, the game should have just ended following the intentional grounding, right?

I have no dog in this fight, but Plainfield North is in my neck of the woods and I can tell you that the Plainfield parents are pretty nervous about this whole hearing.  I'd say there's a 99% chance the game results stand, but nothing at all would surprise me.

What's extra bad about this situation is that the same thing happened in the Central Michigan / Oklahoma State game in early September.  IHSA refs were alerted to that situation and how the officials botched that play, during the course of this season.  All that, at the STILL got it wrong.  Really ugly.

A little disappointed the Plainfield Coach (or Athletic Director) didn't come forward and say "Hey, Fenwick should have won the game, not us. They should be going to the state championship in our place." I'm not sure if a team can voluntarily defer, or forfeit, their win to the opposition...but they should at least try. #sportsmanship

It's one thing if they blew a holding call or a pass interference. But this was a huge error of not following (or knowing) the rule book.

I'm eager to know how this plays out.

Right -- game should not have ended without the extra point try.

True, but a formality.  Gary Fasching is not dumb enough to actually try the EP, and the odds of UWP scoring against the victory formation must be AT LEAST a billion to one.

Yes, but knowing the rules is a characteristic generally sought in officiating crews.

So, the UWP and SJU coaches can't walk over the referee and say, "Don't worry about it. Game over, man"?

Recently we played Colorado College.  In basketball the clock stops after each successful basket in the last one minute of the game.  In this case CC scored with one second remaining and the WARHAWKS leading by a dozen.  Rather than inbound the ball both coaches and teams started shaking hands, the officials left the gym and the last second was never played.

Not so fast on saying the extra point has to be tried everyone.  I have a friend of mine who's crew used to ref in the MIAC and now ref's D2 in the Northern Sun conference and will be working a D2 playoff game this weekend.  I asked him if SJU had to try the extra point since time expired.  He said no.  The game ended on the TD and St. John's wins by one point, end of story.  I then brought up the Augsburg situation and his answer to that was during the regular season if points contribute to how a conference decides tiebreakers for end of season conference positioning and or automatic qualifiers for playoffs, then the extra point needs to be attempted.  Because this was the playoffs, the game is done.
The last shall be first and the  shall be... FIRST AGAIN!!!

I hope the judge does the right thing and puts Fenwick in the state final. It doesn't surprise me that Plainfield has not tried to do the right thing-they were the most rabbid fans I ever encountered in youth football. The IHSA should be ashamed.

Cripes, what kind of pedantic drama-fest has this board descended into?  Umps making mistakes in d3?  Unheard of!  Sportsmanship to call a game early?  Not allowed!  It's like I woke up to a Dungeons & Dragons convention to read the transcript of the dice rules subcommittee.

I hope he gets a chance to review the rulebook before the game. You could send this to him:

RULE 8 SECTION 3 ARTICLE 2.A.

Opportunity to Score

ARTICLE 2. A try is an opportunity for either team to score one or two points while the game clock is stopped after a touchdown. It is a special interval in the game which, for purposes of penalty enforcement only, includes both a down and the "ready'' period that precedes it.

a. The ball shall be put in play by the team that scored a six-point touchdown. If a touchdown is scored during a down in which time in the fourth period expires, the try shall not be attempted unless the point(s) would affect the outcome of the game.

Didn't see anything here about this, so I thought I'd share and see what input there was from the group.

Nationwide search? At St. Olaf? For a football coach? That must be a misprint, if it said Choir Director, I'd believe it. ::)

That's not technically correct.  A penalty on the offense on the last play of a period actually calls for an untimed down the same as a defensive penalty in High school .... unless the penalty brings along loss of down (actually "loss of the ability to replay the down").  And that's included with intentional grounding.
What the hell was that?  That was a Drop-kick.  Drop-kick? How much is that worth?  Three points.  THREE POINTS?!

JMM

SJU vs UWOSH.. if SJU limits penalties and turnovers, they will win. More than 1 turnover, sayonara. Imagine UWPlat without the turnovers...

The same kind that it descends to every time the Tommies take a picture at midfield  ;D ;)
