I don't know the details but one thing that could cause a changed number within a game is blood on the uniform.

You could take out the three biggest runs of the day for UWO (72, 57 and 45 yards) and UWO still averaged 4.6 yards/carry which would still be a full yard better than what St. John's averaged on the day....

I'm not exactly sure what your point is, but if you take away those three plays, and that leaves UW-O with 158 yards rushing, which isn't too bad, considering the competition.  I'm not making excuses, but over half of that 300 yards of rushing came off of three plays.  I would have been astonished if SJU would have out-rushed UW-O.  The fact that UW-O shut down their aerial attack is what really put the nail in SJU's coffin.

UW-O has a great team.  I'll be excited to see if they can slow U$T down.  U$T appears to have made some huge strides from earlier in the year.

A tradition unrivaled...

I remember him making some plays at the Bethel game as he was wearing #6 which was Pierson's number and my son and I had been sitting by Pierson's parents. Apparently the PA and radio calls didn't have the changed roster numbers.

UST has been doing a LOT of number changing lately, which honestly is just goofy.  Caruso's done it in the past a bunch (Charlie Dowdle was probably 5 different numbers during his time at UST), but he's picked it up in recent weeks even moreso.  I guess the good news is the refs are informed and they make an announcement before the series starts.  It's just goofy though.

IMO - the only reason to change numbers (other than required by a position change) is to try and confuse the opponents as to who is actually playing which is a bit shady if you ask me.
Or..... Special Teams packages. Example: a Sr. is #6 and through out the year a Soph, who is also #6 is on a punt coverage team with Sr. #6 then the Soph is going to change number. Nothing shady about that. Just an underclassman improving over the course of the year and getting playing time requiring the number change.

I guess it depends on who has his number changed. If it is the sophmore who is getting his number changed, fine. But if it is a senior/starter that is changing his number, that's a different story.

Just a question here for those who know, but don't the teams have more than 1 jersey for each number available during the game?

Often times yes, they have duplicates for certain numbers, but not for all numbers.

I'm going to give the edge this Saturday to UST, due to having more/better prep time.  UWO has had to focus on their next opponent the last two weeks and now has only one week to prepare for UST.  UST has had a relatively easier path to this game and has time to add some wrinkles to their game strategy.  At this level you always have to prepare for the upcoming game and I'm sure UST did plan for their games against Northwestern and Coe, but I suspect they also refined their game as well.  This is not to take anything away from UST, they earned the road they have by virtue of winning their conference, but there's a good possibility we'll see a new stunt, blitz, or offensive play(s) UWO won't have seen on film.

Agreed, UST has been pretty vanilla these first two playoff games.  Also, vanilla has worked really really well.

UWO didn't have to focus on Wash U any more than St. Thomas had to focus on Coe. Both fairly one-dimensional offenses focused around a key player.

With Jordan Roberts and Jack Newell getting medical redshirts, any word on Dan Harrington of SJU?  I believe he got injured during the UST-SJU game and was then out for the season.

Didn't really have a chance to keep up this last weekend.  But saw SJU gave up 300 rushing?  How?  I know UWO is really good, but that's a lot for what I've heard about the SJU D.  Injuries or just got it handed to them?

There were about three long runs that accounted for half of that.  Two in the second half, if I remember correctly.  I think as UWO started gaining control the Johnnies started taking more risks which didn't work out.

EDIT: I see this has already been addressed by duffman.  Please return to your regularly scheduled programming.

Lots of talk about number changes without any good context. Are we talking about:
a) A player rising up the depth chart throughout the season and needing to change their number once they are part of the "active roster?"
b) A player changing his number week to week?
c) A player changing his number within the course of a game?

It brings to mind one of my favorite movie quotes.

Look, mister, there's... two kinds of dumb, uh... guy that gets naked and runs out in the snow and barks at the moon, and, uh, guy who does the same thing in my living room. First one don't matter, the second one you're kinda forced to deal with.

Option A doesn't really matter, option B & C is happening in the living room.

That pretty much made makes my point.  Wash U was the first round opponent of UWO while Coe was the second round (last weekend) opponent of UST.  UST has had the liberty to work on some new wrinkles more than UWO has, not to mention probably in better health with their starters being able to rest more.  Again, I don't hold this against UST as they earned it by winning their conference, but we might see some new stuff from them should they need it against UWO.

I heard Harrington was granted a medical redshirt (heard this second hand, so not completely sure), but don't know if he's going to come back and use it.  Hopefully he will though, it'd be nice to have him along with Clark and Gillach.
