I'm with you on that. As I looked at the box score yesterday to try to figure out how we stayed in that game, I noted the 9 punts that they had, with 6 returns for 133 yards. We also did much better on 3rd down.

Nick Waldvogel and the Tommie defense really played well, despite the circumstances. We made some impressive stops after giving them good field position after turnovers. And Fenske was a bit rattled in combination with their defense making some plays (especially Eagan, the CB with 3 ints).

I am amused at the karma hit that I took for wishing Oshkosh luck and noting that I sat by some St John's fans at the game yesterday and engaged in some fierce rhetoric. I expected to take a bigger hit for my Johnnie in-breeding joke, honestly.

Why did Oshkosh continue punting the ball to Waldvogel?

Oshkosh folks around me were trying to figure that out, lobbying for them to kick the ball out of bounds or something. They had several times where they had a shot to hit him right after the catch, but he either dodged with a quick step or we did a nice job of shielding off their gunner (a few cases that could have been block in the back calls, but to my biased eyes, they were borderline calls).

Now with the MIAC eliminated, who is everyone rooting for?  I'll be cheering for MH-B, but as long as they beat Mount, I'll be okay with anyone winning it this year.

UST got away w/ an obvious block in the back on a punt return...following the punt return that was called back because of an illegal block.

I believe I know which one you are referencing and there was some discussion of that one with the Oshkosh folks around me.

You could very well be right, but the new way to deal with gunners is "shield" as JTT described. It's more of making yourself big than actually blocking the defender. It's a new tool in the shed that many college ST coaches are using.

This year was definitely close in the rivalry. Next year will provide more intrigue. I really like UST's team next year. Don't know who others have coming back, but this was a young and deep squad. UST really started clicking toward the end of the year... more so than prior years. Speaks to how young they really were 8 TO's and still only a drive away from beating a Top 2-3 team in the country.

They lose a solid player at each level on D (Winter, Addo, Allada). The rest of the D was very young and talented.

On offense it's LT and the slot (Need More Waldvogels ). Waldvogels offensive yards weren't huge. Will really miss him the return game though. The stable of RB'S return (Roberts, Trettel, and Parks). Perra at QB. Crazy that parks went for 160 against the #1 D in the country, and could be 2nd /3rd string. Getting him in the slot for some snaps would be great.

Will be curious to see who SJU goes to at QB. In the games I watched I really liked Alvords pocket presence. Whoever it is has Clark to go to. Some BIG losses on D in Hanson and Thirry I think. Those two were very good.

Ryan Hoag sighting. I saw an ad on Twin Cities TV for Ribnick Fur Christmas Sale & it appeared than one of the male models with none other than the former Bachelorette contestant. Keep an eye out to see if it indeed was who I thought it was....
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

Mr.MIAC

Congratulations to our Tommies. Speaking as an alumnus, you made us proud. You represented the MIAC well and showed real grit in rebounding from such a deficit. Thanks for making our Sunday afternoons a bit more exciting this year. I look forward to watching all you'll achieve next year. If any of you are making a trip out to DC, send me a note. There's a cadre of us who'll welcome you with open arms. Of course, the beers are on us.

I assumed he was referencing the post-game snark here, which often happens on Sundays.

Had a Hoagie sighting at a HS bball game last season. A crowd started forming around him of HS girls. He thought it was very special until he realized they thought he was Kris Humphries. He corrected them and said he was Ryan Hoag. They confusingly asked why they should know Ryan Hoag and walked away.

Why did Oshkosh continue punting the ball to Waldvogel?

Having been at the game I was asking myself the same question.  Not only were they kicking it to him but they were kicking it to him in the middle of the field.  It was unbelievable.  The UWO special teams seem to struggle most of the day.  I don't know how you let a massive human (Winter) go untouched through the middle with a free run to block a punt.

My observations from the game otherwise is that UWO needs to stick to their interior run game with Heckler.  For some reason (though it seems he may have been working with an injury) they went away from it in favor of passing and lateral run game, which plays into UST D's strength of speed.  It slowed the clock and allowed UST to get some momentum back.  The D fought hard all day and did a pretty good job of keeping Trettel in check and limiting the passing game, though they were struggling early.  The Titans D was ripping at the ball all day as well and almost got it out a few more times besides the ones that they did get.  I will be curious to see if they have Heckler this next week because he was limping around pretty good at the end.

UST definitely struggled early on D.  I don't know that they faced a team that could push around their front 7 quite like that all year.  They made some good adjustments though and managed to slow it down.  Offensively I couldn't figure out what they were thinking.  First Parks is an amazing back.  I would have him starting as he was much more impressive than Trettel.  He was physical and fast and attacked the hole.  I would have just kept turning and handing the ball to him.  Also, not sure why but I don't know why after pick 3 they wouldn't think about going with Perra at QB.  Clearly Fenske was not having a good day and it felt like a change could have maybe changed things.  Having seen both play I didn't think there was much of a difference.  Aleada (sp?) had a rough day.  Got burnt on a double move early for a TD and gave up a few other plays to #1 (who had a monster day).  You could tell UST felt confident they could play UWO man as they seemingly sat in it all game to bring more players in for the run.  It hurt them in some big situations though.

Both teams were very good but definitely a game in which one team played horribly in the first half and the other played horribly in the second.  It was not exactly the game I thought I would see but was still a very good one.  Didn't mind the result being a former WIAC player.  Hopefully UWO can get past JC again and take their crack at whoever comes from the other side.  UST definitely had a good season and both of these teams definitely were contenders to win the Stagg.  Be curious to see how UST looks next year losing some top players from that D.  Winter being the biggest loss (my opinion).
