A shame but not a surprise that the first semi ends on a mind boggling call by the officials. It didn't change the outcome but it did suck.
Care to elaborate?  I was only able to follow Live Stats and not watch the game....

JC made a first down on about the O45 and ran forward to spike the ball with :16 left on the clock.  The ref said the down/spike doesn't count because the chain was still being moved. Everyone was standing around trying to figure out what that even meant and the ref starts the clock again. A quick scramble and JC spike the ball again now with only :12 seconds left. In the confusion over what was happening, JC give up a sack and the receivers couldn't get back in time to stop the clock again.  It was strange.

It didn't change the outcome because JC would only have one more thrown to the end zone and OWU were defending deep very well. But it was a little amateur hour for international TV.
Thanks!!!

So ultimately, it probably cost JCU 2-3 seconds, which might have allowed them to get one more play off after the sack, albeit the always exciting Hail Mary.  (Or were the JCU WR's not even close to getting lined up following the sack when time ran out?)

I think you might see it a little different if you watch the replay on espn3.

Just spoke with another Johnnie alum that lives here in Brookings. He just purchased 40 tickets for his family and some classmates to the Johnnie-Tommie Game at Target Field.

Not the one and only TY ?  :)

Let's bet one MILLION dollars!

That's a lot o dough. We agree the refs should have handled it better.

Can I say that it's nice to have two new teams in the championship game?  UMHB has been threatening for years but surprisingly this is only their second time in the game (2004 being the first). UWO is a championship game virgin.  So from a variety and "health of DIII football" point of view, I think this year has turned out great.

Attended the UMHB vs Mount Union Game Saturday. Very competitive game, both teams struggled on Offense as both QB's I thought had difficult days. UMHB QB is very athletic and can move around and throw on the run  much like Russell Wilson, their receivers are very athletic and have great hands, I just don't see UWO matching up well with them. UMHB is also very big up front on both side so they will neutralize Oshkosh' size advantage and they are much more athletic then Oshkosh in the trenches. #50 the Left DE for UMHB looks like he should be playing for a major D1 program and can be very disrupting to an offense. UMHB LB's are small but very good, they are very quick and extremely instinctive. If these teams played 10 times I would say UMHB would win 6 or 7.

IMO UMHB wins this game, I have watched both teams play at least 2 times this season and feel UMHB will be too athletic for UWO.

As a Johnnie fan and after watching this game Saturday it is frustrating but clear we still have a little ways to go before we will compete on the same level as those two teams, we just don't have the horses up front right now.

I am with you. I think this is also good for D3 football over the long haul too. I think some people suspected 5-6 teams having a realistic shot at the Stagg going in. And, that appears to have played itself out with two new faces in the Stagg, each having had some dynamic close games the last 1-2 rounds to get there. These are two very good representatives for D3 Football. I don't suspect Whitewater or Mount Union to be going anywhere, but I do see a little more year to year variability going forward.

It makes it hurt a little more as a Tommie fan, knowing the door was open, but good to see some fresh faces at the Stagg.

I agree that the J's are just out of reach of the big teams, but I'm not sure we need to go big to compete.  I'm hoping a more high risk/high reward approach with an offense that does most of its work by air can get games played in our favour. A high scoring air attack will make opposition sides play the same game to keep up. And in that game our speedy defense can even things out.

Anyways. Dan Marino for class president.

On the flip side, I don't think the Johnnies were favorites in any of their four national championship games that they won.  The key might not be in trying to match what other teams are doing, but to create our own separation in some facet of the game.  In '76 the Johnnies weren't physically intimidating, but the quadruple option gave them something unique.  In '03, again not physically intimidating, but they had a quick/tough defense and found various ways to get the ball to their playmaker (Elliot).

Johnnies were favored in '76. Towson was a two-loss team going in.

The truly amazing win was '63. Prairie View was the national black college and SWAC champion. While many folks know of Otis Taylor and Ken Houston from that team, that squad was talented all over the field.

One of the nice things about a summer Christmas (I miss the snow quite a bit but you have to take the good with the bad) is that we can celebrate outside. Australia, and Melbourne in particular, celebrate with an evening of carols followed by fireworks. We're about 20 minutes from the light show but we've got the singers going full throttle on the range of traditional Christmas tunes here at the local carols in Dendy Park.  There are usually about 10k here. You can see the stage to the left.
