I'm borderline millennial by birth date, but I don't identify with any of those stereotypes.  We've got a handful of what I'd consider millennials at work.  Some are fine, others need a real kick in the ass.
I've had similar experiences.
I feel like the generational "millennial" moniker is a lazy shortcut most of the time. The characterizations that I've seen often simply apply to young people and have been applicable for a long time.

I don't put a lot of stock in generational categorizations and I don't think it's meaningful except in hindsight when patterns can be seen more clearly.

So in addition to high school seniors announcing their "commitment" via Twitter they are also announcing on Twitter their "offers" to D3 schools?  What does that even mean?  What are they being offered?

Crushing debt.

My favorite is the kids who insist on doing some sort of ceremony on signing day. It's actually some sort of NCAA violation for DIII schools to have kids sign anything committing them to play for the school. I hope all they're signing at those things is a housing agreement deposit check.

Totally agree. The D3 kids should be recognized but maybe in  a different way on a seperate day.

I think a lot of you are being dishonest with yourselves if the only reason you played football was for "fun" or "the love of the game." Everyone usually has an external motivating factor by the end of their first week of two-a-days. For me, it was babes. I barely played, but guess what, the babes didn't know that. All they knew was, "Hey, there goes USTBench, he's on the FOOTBAWWW team." Yeah, it was fun, but when you're on the scout team and praying for a blow out, you kind of need another reason to be there, there's safer forms of exercise.

Honestly, I really don't see announcing it on Twitter as that big of a deal. Some of these kids were probably offered a D2 scholarship or a PWO at an FCS school and decided to go to a MIAC school instead. I think their friends and coaches would like to know, and I'm guessing, technically, they were "offered" a chance to compete for a job. Let the 18 year old kid have his moment, he really just wants the babes to know anyway, doesn't really care what a bunch of old guys on D3boards have to say about "These gosh darn millenials, in my day nobody knew we had a football team and WE liked it!"

I agree with you to a point. My motivating factor was to not be a quitter, and to win mostly. I was a stereotypical meat-head in that way. But as for the "signing day" business, I think the kids who feel compelled to do that in high school will probably get mocked in college. They're the kid who comes in and tells all of the other freshmen, "Coach said I was his #1 recruit this season. I reminded him of [All-American from previous season]." I have no problem with announcing on Twitter, but throwing a press conference for yourself is a bit off. If there's five other kids from your high school all doing it at once, that's a bit different.

This is no longer a violation. D-III started allowing kids to be recognized in this way a couple years ago.

Division III Celebratory Signing Form
Proposal 2015-8 was adopted by the Division III membership at the 2015 NCAA Convention.  With the adoption of this proposal, Division III institutions are permitted to use a standard, NCAA provided, non-binding celebratory signing form.  A prospective student-athlete is permitted to sign the celebratory signing form at any point, including high school signing events, after the prospective student-athlete has been accepted to the institution.  Institutions should keep in mind, however, that they are not permitted to publicize a prospective student-athlete's commitment to the institution until the prospective student-athlete has submitted a financial deposit (Bylaw 13.10.7).

I was going to ask you, working with our nation's youth every day.As for me, I am totally confused by some of this stuff. I believe it's part of the Millennial generations desire to receive a trophy for everything the do. So if they receive a generic letter in the mail, an email or a text message from a school it's an "offer" in their mind. That's all I can come up with.
Its about one thing, Social Media, kids can't get out done, they want to show everyone their importance by broadcasting how many 'Offers' ( errr D3 Contacts) they received. Parents are just as bad, telling everyone on facebook their kid got a "scholarship" to go play D3 sports, just leaving out that the "Scholarship" is really just academic or financial based aid.  Just sounds better  :) ...but no real harm unless of course there is some impropriety in the "aid" being offered.

What are they being offered?

They are being offered a roster spot.  No seriously.....a roster spot offer.....sometimes a 6th offer!
