Pulling guys out of UWW and UWO's backyard, nice.

Using head-to-head results I don't think either of those schools have missed the kids getting pulled west.

Considering head-to-head results, maybe SJU should follow UST's lead and start recruiting in Wisconsin...

I don't think the criticism should stop at SJU's non WI recruiting strategy. Based on the results of the last 4 years (a 2-3 record vs UST, 3 straight playoff appearances, 1 MIAC title) it's clear Gary and his staff have no idea what they are doing. Might be time to swap with rugby and become a club sport.

I don't think you have to go that far. Just adjust your expectations. A good start would be to update your tagline from SJ1 to one that better reflects SJU's place in the modern era. Maybe something like "The St. Thomas of Central Minnesota"

We would never disgrace central MN in such a manner.

Man, why do you have to drag rugby into the mud, for the sole purpose of a negative connotation?   ;)

SJU was the best D2 team in the state while I was playing at BU, though UMD has since passed them up, and I think SJU moved back to D3.  (Rugby divisions in MN are much more flexible...a couple of seasons of high success or failure can allow you to be moved - BU was D3 my freshman and sophomore years, but after winning state 2 years, we were bumped up to D2, where we were a middle-ish team- SJU, SCSU, and Winona State were tops.)

Sadly, BU doesn't even have a team at the moment...it requires either an active player base to recruit new bodies, or a coach willing to do so on a volunteer basis.  UST had just gotten a team when I was a senior, but I never played them as they started in D3 and we were D2 at the moment.

I wonder if a number of MIAC schools would ever jump on board with full fledged NCAA sponsored D3 lacrosse. UST and SJU have much of the infrastructure in place with successful club teams. I suppose its unlikely given the budgetary constraints. You would have to add mens and womens programs and do some pretty significant out of conference travel to round out a schedule.

I think you've just identified a priority for the next UST fundraising campaign.

I haven't been on the inside of too many of these conversations, but I would have to think it's coming. The sport is moving westward and more teams adding the sports will lessen the travel issues.

As Duff said there are D3 schools all over at this state at about 18 grand a year fully loaded tuition for the WIAC locations. The only kids from my local HS in the past few years that I can recall that played D3 in Minnesota went to CSS.

18 grand. I can see how they can afford UST because it's so much cheaper than SJU. Wait a minute. No, that isn't true. Hmmm. How can St Glenn possibly attract talent to a school that costs twice what a school at home costs?  It's a darn mystery.

As an out of stater, I can give 2 reasons why one might go to UST over SJU:
1. It very well may be cheaper. In my case, St Thomas' financial aid package was excellent. And they certainly weren't paying me for my football skills. My athletic feats were limited to an Intramural Kickball Championship.
2. There are a lot more attractive females that attend UST than attend SJU.
