The game might not have been pretty, but it was great hearing the Johnnie announcers again. I didn't realize how much I missed having them be a part of my Saturdays! 8-) ;D

That's true.  It was a good morning.

Not to sound like an ass but 98-0?!?!  I could be way off but it seems like St. Scholastica dominates the UMAC in most sports but get their butts handed to them outside of the UMAC.  Am I way off or is that conference really that bad?

The Johnnies had a good opening game.

The Johnnies were hot and Scholastica were way off. The Jays scored three touchdowns in the first six minutes and everyone knew the game was over.  From there it was basically working a few reps through each line until everyone was essentially just standing around for the last quarter.

2015- UW Oshkosh 48-0
2014- St Johns 35-7
2013- Bethel 70-13
2012- UW Oshkosh 55-10
2011- St. Thomas 48-2

Those are the scores of their last 5 playoff appearances.  I honestly don't see today as being a result of St. Johns having a good game, I see it as St Scholastica being so overmatched it's not even funny.  Baseball is the same for them.  In the past 5 years they are 84-3 in the UMAC and 5-10 in the NCAA tournament.  Sorry, but that is awful.

We are trying to be kind. The Saints know how they played.

My thoughts on today's Bethel-Dubuque game which Dubuque won in double overtime. With Gunnar Bloom not returning this year, it looks like the Royals won't be able to depend on their usual ground and pound run game. McCann had a decent day with 94 yards on 23 carries, but there were just too many runs of 2 yards or less (25) and another 6 rushes of only 3 yards. If they are going to move the ball, it looks like it's going to have to be through the air. Marsh threw the ball well when he had time, but if his first read was covered he tends to panic too much and threw it up for grabs too many times.

The defense played well with their new 4-3 scheme but the offense put them in a tough spot too many times with 5 turnovers (3 ints and 2 lost fumbles). The offense also had a bad snap from center which resulted in a safety. The biggest problem the defense had today was getting pressure on the qb, and when they did they weren't able to contain him as he was able to scramble for 1st downs on several occasions.

I thought Bethel was a bit undisciplined at times. A personal foul penalty for continuing to play after losing their helmet, a personal foul for contacting an official and a bench warning for players too close to the field. Coaching issue?  ???

All in all it was an entertaining game on a beautiful September afternoon. It was a bit warm for the players, and several players went down with cramps on both teams in the second half. In hind sight, if Bethel would have just kicked the first extra point instead of faking it and going for 2 and failing, or kicking a field goal in the 4th quarter instead of going for 4th and 1 at the 19, they probably would have won the game. Yes, I know, it's not a given he would have made those kicks, but it looks like they have a decent kicker for a change this year, making all his extra point attempts and his other field goal attempt. And I also know the game would have been played differently if those things happened - just saying they would have had a better chance of winning if they would have made the first extra point and/or field goal.

What a beautiful day in the World's Most Beautiful Stadium (tm).  It made me homesick to see that spectacular scenery and day over the Internets.

There isn't a lot to conclude about a game like that, but I'll make a few points that came to mind as I watched.  I would be very interested to read what those who were at the ground have to say.

* Execution was crisp.  Very crisp.  Particularly the passing game.  Erdmann only threw the ball seven time, for seven completions (3 passing TD's) and 129 yards.  The pass from Alvord to Auger was a thing of beauty.  Perfect timing.  Kai Barber only got to carry the ball one time, for 31 yards.

* The Johnnies were far more aggressive at the contest.  Hitting harder both on offense and defense.  The running backs, particularly Udoibok who got a shot late in the second half, ran to punish.  The Johnnies were noticeably bigger on TV in the skill positions but didn't seem all that bigger in the trenches, but they certainly pushed the line around regardless of which side of the ball they lined up on.

* The defense was scary.  Scholastica only managed -7 yards rushing and if you give them back the 29 yards they lost on sacks then the running plays only managed 22 today yards.  Of CSS's 59 passing yards, 49 came on two plays.  One nice long completion and a second long completion off a QB scramble from a sack and a desperate pass into broken coverage.

* The first teams only had two penalties.  One false start on the offense and one jump offsides on the defense.  Despite the aggressive play, execution was clean.

In conclusions, CSS was obviously very outclassed today and after the Johnnies scored three TD's in the first five and a half minutes then pretty much CSS had little left to give.  But if this standard of execution is a true reflection of this Johnnie team's play then Sept 23 at the Target Field will be one hell of a game and the hottest tickets in town.

Also, UWW lost their opening game for the first time since 2003.  So I guess we know what that means... ;)

EDIT: One more point.  I just read on gojohnnies.com that every player on the 180-man roster played (except for injured players).  We ran that game as deep as is possible.  But when guys were getting what might be their only chance in college they grabbed it with both hands.  CSS was unfortunately demolished.

They are really that bad.  Unless the ECFC manages to beat them out, they are consistently ranked dead last in the D3Football.com conference rankings.  And lately, even the ECFC can't surpass them for ineptitude.

In 2006, after Carleton hired Ramler, Reussse wrote a piece on how having Johnnie connections did not mean anything when it came to John Gagliardi giving you a break on the field, as former Carleton coach Bob Sullivan, also a former Johnnie, had learned over the years. Thought of it today as my fellow SJU Class of '97er suffered through a tough day.

"John's going to be John when we play them, and I wouldn't want it any other way," Ramler said. "I've always felt if a team has the game won and it's still scoring points against you in the fourth quarter, the problem is with your team, your program, not the team scoring points."

Another reminder: Being a Johnnies insider does not add to autumn mercy.

Maybe UST can match or exceed it against St Olaf this year.

The UMAC is doing it tough against the MIAC this weekend. AUG is beating NW 29-7 late in the third quarter.
