We shouldn't be surprised by this.  Don't get me wrong, I'll be at the game, but this is a D3 PR event put on by the Twins.  Who would pay for sodding the dirt, the Twins, the Johnnies, the Tommies???  And quickly laid sod is sometimes worse than just dirt.  If UST had a football field or campus they were proud of this probably wouldn't be happening in the first place.

Weird though that the Twins sodded over the infield for the soccer game there a few years ago, which was also in the middle of the baseball season.  Granted, the Twins weren't deep into a playoff race, but still.  They did it then, no reason they couldn't have done it now.  I would think a couple of donors would EASILY be happy to pick up the tab for a few pallets of sod.  Problem solved.

Good enough for the NFL, good enough for the MIAC.

It sucks in the NFL too.

That's my thought...wasn't there a super bowl recently where there was freshly laid sod that led to poor field conditions?  Maybe it isn't as big of an issue for soccer, since it doesn't involve needing to plant and gain leverage against the ground in order to block or tackle someone, but it seems like it just wouldn't work well for football, with rootless sod sitting on top of dirt.

To do it right, you have to uniformly scrape off a couple inches of the infield dirt, so the sod can be level with the rest of the grass, and have it sit down in a bed, vs. shifting on top of the infield.  Not saying it's an easy task, but they've got the equipment to do so.

Playing this game during the baseball season is probably a little silly. I haven't put down much sod, but have done enough to know that it probably wouldn't be ready to play on in less than a week. The covered the dirt for ND and BC but that involved a hella lot more $$$ and was played in November.

Agree w you, although I think it's closer to 6 inches to a foot of digging, I remember seeing how they did that for a game and they showed the pieces, basically thick enough so they don't move.  You still have seams though that I remember causing an issue.  NDSU, one of their championships down in Texas, there was an issue from new sod from what I remember.

I just went on the twins site and counted about 750 tickets available.   :o

Yeah, that was less than great.  They had been putting new sod in between the hashes in November after the high school season and letting it take root for the early January game but the Dallas weather didn't cooperate that year.

Anyone going to the Auggie/Gustie game might want to consider parking at Lot 94 which is actually on the West Bank of the U of M and just across Riverside from Augsburg.  A Nobel Peace Prize Forum is scheduled at Si Melby Hall and Kennedy Center Friday and Saturday which will create a parking issue for sure. Cost might be $10 with the Gopher game event price but it is close to Edor Nelson Field.

The recommendation from the Augsburg Athletic Department is to park in the UofM 21st Avenue Ramp.

Both will work but I like lot 94 as it is closer than the 21st Ave ramp.

There is a link to a webcast on the Tommie website so it looks all systems go for Tommie video and VOJ audio.
