Well, Unfortunatley I had a long work phone call during the game so I was only able to check scores every so often and caught about five plays after the first quarter.

@ Tentative.  Why?  I don't know. Perhaps hangover from last week?  Perhaps a lack of confidence?
@ Undisciplined. Three of the five plays I caught were a 15-yard personal foul followed by a 10-yard hold followed by big sack. Where did that come from?

It looks to me like the boys must pause, refocus and take back the initiative. The game had a very reactive feel to it. About four more weeks to work those issues out before CON and I reckon both the Auggies and Gusties would have their tails up at the thought of knocking over the Johnnies.  So there's not much chance of our opponents rolling over and giving us the wins from here on.

No. 19 Illinois Wesleyan who upset Whitewater to start the season defeated No. 5 Wheaton (Ill) 14-10.

Is Wheaton still playing those players accused of hazing?

No.

Not sure whether to take the suggestion seriously about SJU losing ground in the poll but this is not the type of win where a team would drop three spots. Plus, the voters have some general idea who Bethel has played to get to 1-4 and understands that Bethel is probably not a MIAC bottom-feeder.

So with a close win over an unranked opponent, does SJU drop out of the top-ten?

Yeah, no. Not serious.

Mr.MIAC

That's interesting. I don't think anyone would say Bethel is a MIAC bottom-feeder, but they are unranked, without any votes received. I assume that more votes equals greater perceived relative strength. Here's what happened in ranks nine through 12 this week:

9. St. John's: Narrowly beat unranked Bethel
10. Delaware Valley: Stomped all over unranked FDU-Florham
11. Frostburg State: Bye week
12. UW-Platteville: Narrowly beat ranked UW-Stout, which previously beat a top-ten team (UST)

I can't see St. John's moving up in the rankings this week. Only two teams need to receive more votes than SJU for the Johnnies to be pushed outside the top-ten. UW-Platteville beat a tough, ranked opponent. I can see UW-Platteville moving up. Maybe voters will discount Delaware Valley's win because of the unranked opponent, but they still won a blowout. I can see them staying put or moving up. Frostburg had a bye. I can see them staying put.

Pat Coleman

Well, if you're advocating for UWP to move up (possible) then odds are Frostburg moves down. I mean, those two things are interconnected, right?

I'm trying to figure out why this is such a concern for you Rev. In the end, what does it mean? Maybe you ought to focus on something important.

Am I correct to assume that strength of schedule influences post-season scheduling? If MIAC teams maintain high rankings, doesn't that help UST on the strength of schedule front? If this is not the case, please explain.

The D3football.com Top 25 (and every other Top 25) have no bearing on playoff selection.

How will the Tommie's stifling run defense play out against Concordia next week? Not sure what the status of Concordia's QB Herzog, but they aren't a major passing team anyway. Doubtful that we'll be able to keep the rushing yardage down next week like the last few.

Okay, my bad. I thought rankings influenced strength of schedule. Can you point me to a good source on how scheduling works?

Scheduling? Not really. But here's how the playoffs work:

I know that regional rankings are not directly tied to the Top 25 ranking. Is it reasonable/appropriate to expect that the regional rankings are not at all influenced by your top 25?

Yes. If you read the link I posted above, you'll see what the regional rankings are influenced by.
