Can you point me to a good source on how scheduling works?

Scheduling? Not really. But here's how the playoffs work:
http://www.d3football.com/interactive/faq/playoffs

Thanks. Where it says at-large bids are determined in part by "results versus ranked Division III teams as established by the rankings at the time of selection," what rankings are they referencing? I also thought the seeding was influenced by rankings, but I must be confused.

The NCAA regional rankings.

Okay, so I get that NCAA regional rankings influence the playoffs. The NCAA rankings page has a drop-down that includes NCAA regional rankings, coaches poll, and the D3football.com rankings. If the NCAA rankings are the ones that influence playoff decisions, what value is added by the D3football.com rankings? I'm assuming it's something substantial and widely understood given that the rankings are listed by the NCAA.

Regional rankings aren't released until later in the year and aren't really a top 25, just a top 10 for each of the 4 regions. I guess the top 25's are just there for fun and for people like us to argue about and try to find some grand meaning in life.

I guess. So what criteria are used by the NCAA to determine regional rankings? If the methodology allows for any subjectivity then it seems likely that the D3football.com ranking--listed by the NCAA, followed by pretty much everyone--would influence decision-making.

Pat Coleman

We like to say that the NCAA regional rankings will tell you who will go to the playoffs, but our poll will tell you who will win once you get there, as well as who the best teams are.

In addition, the AFCA Top 25 can be counted on on an annual basis to overrate a team that has a strong record but low strength of schedule because the coaches don't get the same detailed information which we provide to our voters. So in the playoffs you could see them rank the Midwest Conference champ higher than we would, or the champ of a lower-level conference out East, and the coaches poll would consider their first-round playoff result an upset, where we would have it right.

The same criteria on the link I provided above.

The basis for the regional rankings is in that link too. Strength of schedule, wins against other regionally ranked teams (somewhat of a feedback loop, no?), etc. So some objective criteria, but not entirely objective.

The Cobbers will have an opportunity to chime in on the conversation this week. It will get very interesting pending the result of the Cobbers vs. UST; definitely the game of the week in the MIAC
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

Looking at the stats, Concordia doesn't pass the ball very much, and in fact yesterday, they only had 31 yards of passing against Gustavus.  The Tommies have given up a total of 191 rushing yards, and -27 over the past two games.  It will be a long day if Concordia cannot get their running game going.  But these are just stats and the game is played on the field.

So, I'm standing in the slow group starting corral for the Twin Cities 10 Mile this morning, got my headphones in, getting into race mode, and I turn to my right and who should I see but Frank Rajkowski!

And he smoked me, of course -- finished almost 10 minutes ahead of me. But that was kinda cool.
