Vegas. Unbelievable. If anyone posting or reading here has friends, family or themselves there I wish you good luck. My prayers this Sunday will be for those people in Vegas.

We had a guest priest for mass yesterday.  He started with something along the lines of:  It's a glorious day, especially considering that 37K people got to see the Tommies beat the Johnnies last Saturday.  ::)

Turns out that he teaches at U$T.  I turned my ears off after that.  ;D

I've taken in 2 Johnnie games in person this season, and I am honestly a bit underwhelmed with them.

Offensively, the o-line has shown no ability to pick up a blitz.  St. Olaf showed that, the Tommies took advantage of it, and the woes continued versus Bethel.  Erdmann can obviously throw a deep ball, but he rarely has the time.  Seems like they need to throw more quick hitting passes underneath and to the flats.  The running game shows flashes of brilliance, but when it struggles, it's ugly.  I've seen very little ability to sustain drives--concerning.

Defensively, we're pretty decent.  Bethel started throwing to the flats, and that gave the Johnnies some problems.  I think we're going to see a lot of teams attack that.  The younger guys need to stick with their fundamentals and play their positions.

Hopefully, the Johnnies can make some strides in the coming weeks.

MIAC week 6 2017

Crib notes version this week. Gustavus has the bye.

Carleton will lose at Bethel's Homecoming weekend. BU is starting to get its mojo back.

Augsburg will do its best to upset the Johnnies, who are home two weeks in a row in the middle of the season. If the Johnnies don't learn anything from the BU win, expect a similar score.

Hamline should win on the road down in Northfield at St. Olaf.

Game of the week is Concordia at St. Thomas. The Cobbers lost their starting QB in their win against Gustavus, just about ending their bid to win the MIAC this season. St. Thomas should win this one without much drama.

I hadn't seen that!  That's a major bummer for the Cobbs.  I hope he's alright.

WOW! I wake up this morning and see where we are deciding who is in the playoffs after week 5  :o
The Cobbers will have an opportunity to chime in on the conversation this week. It will get very interesting pending the result of the Cobbers vs. UST; definitely the game of the week in the MIAC

Looking at the stats, Concordia doesn't pass the ball very much, and in fact yesterday, they only had 31 yards of passing against Gustavus.  The Tommies have given up a total of 191 rushing yards, and -27 over the past two games.  It will be a long day if Concordia cannot get their running game going.  But these are just stats and the game is played on the field.

Should be an interesting game. It's looking like Concordia will be without their starting QB, after he went down with an ankle injury in the third quarter against Gustavus. Concordia used a freshman QB the rest of the way. Not to knock him, but it's hard to win in the MIAC with a freshman starting at QB. If he's the guy the rest of the way, Concordia's run game might not be quite as effective.  I'm thinking UST will focus their attention on Chad Johnson, who is having a great year.

After getting out-coached last year, I'm hoping UST comes in a little better prepared. Especially against the hook and ladder...

If the Cobbers don't have Herzog at QB, it shouldn't hurt them in the slightest. If you look at his numbers on the season, 29-59, for 379 and 2 tds in 4 games, they won't miss that "production". Also if you look at his rushing numbers, 47 carries for 162, 40 yards per game. New QB is 6'4 230, so he is more than capable of shouldering the load. Cobbers are going to get some rushing yards, but I think they are going to have to throw it a bit this week, which has been a huge problem the past couple years. Cobbs win is going to have to be a 17-14 type game, with either D or special teams coming up with a big play.

21-13 over a struggling Bethel squad isn't inspiring. From the little I've read it sounds like the offense relied on big plays and the D needed some crucial stops. Going to hope/assume it was a hangover from the hype and loss of the previous weekend.

SJU sideline reporter Charlie Carr had a Twit pic of Evan Clark playing defense on Saturday. Any reports of how often he did that? If he's going to sub out while the Jays are on offense I'm all for getting his athleticism on the field.

We'll see if Duff saw the same thing that I did. It appeared that when he came in it was Nickle coverage & he shadowed Marquardt #9
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

I actually think Herzog's injury will hurt CC for this game.  While his statline doesn't show his value to the team, that type of offense really relies on rhythm and timing (obviously all offenses do, but this one especially so).  Having a different guy under center can really throw off that rhythm, especially if it's a freshman QB being the replacement.
