WOW! I wake up this morning and see where we are deciding who is in the playoffs after week 5  :o
The Cobbers will have an opportunity to chime in on the conversation this week. It will get very interesting pending the result of the Cobbers vs. UST; definitely the game of the week in the MIAC

Looking at the stats, Concordia doesn't pass the ball very much, and in fact yesterday, they only had 31 yards of passing against Gustavus.  The Tommies have given up a total of 191 rushing yards, and -27 over the past two games.  It will be a long day if Concordia cannot get their running game going.  But these are just stats and the game is played on the field.

Should be an interesting game. It's looking like Concordia will be without their starting QB, after he went down with an ankle injury in the third quarter against Gustavus. Concordia used a freshman QB the rest of the way. Not to knock him, but it's hard to win in the MIAC with a freshman starting at QB. If he's the guy the rest of the way, Concordia's run game might not be quite as effective.  I'm thinking UST will focus their attention on Chad Johnson, who is having a great year.

After getting out-coached last year, I'm hoping UST comes in a little better prepared. Especially against the hook and ladder...

If the Cobbers don't have Herzog at QB, it shouldn't hurt them in the slightest. If you look at his numbers on the season, 29-59, for 379 and 2 tds in 4 games, they won't miss that "production". Also if you look at his rushing numbers, 47 carries for 162, 40 yards per game. New QB is 6'4 230, so he is more than capable of shouldering the load. Cobbers are going to get some rushing yards, but I think they are going to have to throw it a bit this week, which has been a huge problem the past couple years. Cobbs win is going to have to be a 17-14 type game, with either D or special teams coming up with a big play.

Disagree big time. Concordia is not a passing team, never have been (Except somewhat in the Griffin Neal/Zylstra era). They run a modified wishbone/inverted wishbone and they throw only around 10 times a game.

Their offense is predicated on misdirection using a variety of traps, counters, sweeps and draws. To be effective at stopping it your linebackers need to be incredibly disciplined.

Herzog had 80 yards rushing on 15 carries last year against UST, and he made some HUGE plays running the football. That is an offense that is very difficult to master and Herzog runs it about as good as anyone who has played at Concordia, save for Schumacher.

Herzog carries the ball a couple of 13/14 times a game. This would be a big blow to the Cobbers. Their backup may cause problems because of his size, but Herzog's productivity, while not conventional of a quarterback, will be missed big time.

We'll have to agree to disagree then. Yes, obviously Concordia is not a passing team. It is important if they are going to consistantly move the ball at all, to complete short passes to the outside, something Herzog has been unable to do. Last years game Concordia basically had two drives, if you leave out the hook and ladder play. Both drives were capped by long Chad Johnson touchdown runs. I just don't think they are going to miss his 3 yards per carry and sub 50% completions. Depending upon if he plays or not, we shall see on Saturday.

We have been downsizing and I just ran across my 'Certificate of Scholarship' to College of St. Thomas, School of Science, Literature and Arts. I was supposed to sign it and return it. I don't think I got one to SJU.

I can see how UST's football competence would be very difficult to accept. The football field used to be the only place that SJU had an edge. Now, not only are their bosses UST grads but they have to hear it on Saturday AND Sunday too. Tough life.

So, Rev took over your account now?  ::)

Nah, I've got my very own UST superiority complex. And cleaner jokes too.

A well run option offense is highly reliant on reps and timing.  Herzog's played a ton back there.  Any change to any of the key parts will be felt.

I hope he plays Saturday!

My jokes are pure as the driven snow. They're sort of like Johnnies before discovering women, which usually happens sometime after leaving Collegeville...

It appears UST football, and more specifically their fans, are not believers in the "If you build it they will come" mantra from Field of Dreams. One week after hosting the largest D3 crowd in history they combined with Augsburg to produce a total of 937 spectators for their road game this weekend.

This Saturday will be their first time back on campus since the Target Field game. Good luck to them as they try and surpass the 2,200 fans that came the last time they hosted Concordia.

On the other hand, SJU's attendance numbers are always through the roof. Looks like there are plenty of masochists in the world, particularly in Stearns County...

Could draw more fans though, I recall the Wartburg game drew 2,700 a few years ago.

For the Gustavus and Northwestern games, were a majority of those fans from the visiting school? From what I gather, at the game on Saturday, a good number of the fans in attendance were from St Thomas.

Still, this is an area that we've got room for improvement and where I'm a bit jealous of the dedication of SJU fans. They've got years of culture and dedication ingrained in the alumni as pride for the school and football team. The St Thomas sections are relatively disappointed, with mostly parents still.

SJU @ AUG last year: 1,143

UST homecoming last year against Augsburg: 5,320

I expect more fans this homecoming weekend with the Cobbers coming into town.

a) If there is such a thing as a cracker-box football stadium, Augsburg qualifies. I don't know if this is still the case but when I played WE SHARED A SIDELINE. I prefer wide-open concourses with easily accessible cold ones. Be they cans of Hamm's I hid in the woods, the beer garden at UST, or for only $9 at Target Field.

b) I can listened to the Friendly Neighbor walk me through that beat down while raking the yard (playing a little game called, "Dog Turd Minefield") and driving to Fleet Farm. Beers in the garage were most certainly not $9.

c) Where does one park at Augsburg? Fighting traffic from the Gopher game and looking for a place on the street to park my truck, no thanks.

d) Last two games combined were what? 110-13. I know they're a little bit improved this year, but come on.

e) Guys like Rev MIAC, Phd. probs afraid they'd get mugged.

f) Guessing my conceal and carry doesn't fly on Auggie's campus, but I ain't walking from my truck to the stadium in that neighborhood unless I'm strapped.  ;)

I was not at the GAC game so no idea but there were clearly many NW fans at that 1st game yes. Not really an overwhelming number of NW fans, it was alumni night at that game so we had about 300 football alumni there for free food in Murphy Square park before the game. The Alumni Event was a great get together and the parents of the current players were there too so we had good attendance at the game and the pregame event.

bench I did that on Saturday, fought traffic from the Gopher game to Auggie. I parked at the lot across Riverside Ave that is on the U of M campus which costs $4 but its a guaranteed spot. Lot 94 is a short walk to the field and I avoided searching for parking on the street because I was in a hurry to see the mighty Tommies.  :P

Conceal and Carry? Who would check you? Nobody. I have spent a lot of time in Minneapolis and a few days in Brooklyn NY. I am not afraid of anything going on in that neighborhood.
