Fun fact of the day from the UST Game Notes:
QuoteOver the last six seasons, Concordia has the MIAC's second-best winning percentage (42-12, .777), just ahead of St. John's (46-15, .754), and just behind the Tommies (60-9, .870).

The six year look back window is one of my favorites in sports. The number of classic stories and documentaries focusing on six year eras are some of the best.

Any mention of playoff appearances or conference titles mentioned along with that stat? I imagine Concordia would gladly trade spots with the Jays over the last 6 years. Going .500 (3-3) in the playoffs isn't going to help your winning percentage and all SJU fans would agree they need to do better.

If playoff records are removed Concordia stays at .778 (42-12), SJU bumps up to .781 (43-12) and UST makes a big leap to .909 (50-5). But none of that really matters as this board is only interested in looking ahead, not to the past.

I barely remember yesterday! ;)

Just for fun I looked at regular season numbers for a more typical 5 year window. This also coincides with the years Gary has been the head coach. I know you'll be surprised by what the numbers show.

CON: 34-10 - .772
SJU: 38-7 - .844
UST 40-5 - .888

I didn't consider the impact of playoffs on SJU's record actually. I also assumed that it was only conference record, not overall. I was just surprised by it and didn't really dig further aside from seeing an opportunity to get under y'alls skin. 5 years of Fasching (and the rough year before that) make a lot of sense.

What is actually interesting about it to me is the total number of games differential. In that six years UST has played almost 2 seasons more games than Concordia.

And in Gene McGivern's defense, he takes the Lou Holtz approach to game notes every week. He will do whatever he can to make a compelling case that UST's opponent that week is toughest one in the country. It gets really entertaining when you get to some of the more traditional bottom dwellers on the UST schedule.

*Did you know that in the last 27 years Carleton is 4-1 when passing for 407 + yards in a game.

* Can you believe that since Hamline remodeled their Press Box they are 3-0 when rushing for 220+ yards in a game

* When St Olaf has 5 or more Floridians on their roster the average margin of victory at home has been 13 points.

This will sound like Sid Hartman discussing the merits of a Gopher bowl game invite but I think the added weeks of practice is an understated benefit of teams that make consistently long playoff runs. Even a scout team rube like myself gained valuable on-field experience  (via practice) and a better understanding of offensive scheme thanks to added team film study, etc. And for guys that are backups, who eventually become starters, the benefits have to be even stronger.

For fun I looked at a running total of total games played dating back to 2008 for SJU and UST. The further back you go in the decade UST played a significantly more number of games.

   SJU     UST      Game Diff
2016      12     13      1
2015      24     28      4
2014    36      39      3
2013     46     49      3
2012     56     64      8
2011     66     78     12
2010     76     91     15
2009     87     104     17
2008     98     114     16

OZ - Any talk down under about the NHL debut of Nathan Walker, the first Aussie to play in an NHL game. He's scheduled to play for the Washington Capitals against the Canadiens tomorrow night. There is some push to have the Australian National Anthem played before the game.

He's a feisty little guy, who is a very good, fast skater. Probably will be on the 4th line, but the fact that he made the roster, and will play is quite an accomplishment.

A friend of mine is quite an avid senior league hockey player and he's mentioned Walker to me a few times in the last couple years.  I knew that Walker had been drafted and now can't believe I didn't mention it here.  Unfortunatley as to press coverage, Walker is from Sydney so he won't get much of a mention down here in Melbourne (plus NHL is an enthusiast's sport down here).  I'm sure he'll get a short mention on the news tomorrow night though. I'll have to look and see if that game is being broadcast down here.

The highlight of my friend's hockey life was the opportunity to take the ice against Wayne Gretzky a year or two ago when Gretsky was doing some exhibition tour.  I think it's been mentioned four or five hundred times over beers.

But did you tell him you got to touch Bill Baker's 1980 Gold Medal in your 7th grade home room?
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

60 years!  That's a heck of an achievement. Congrats, 57.

(Just curious, but do you need to store your diploma in a hermetically sealed vacuum case to keep it preserved?)
