Thought they mentioned injury on broadcast.
Will really need him for the Cobbers.

Yup. Really like what he brings to the offense.

I just watched an interesting documentary on the history of Notre Dame football. It's striking how many parallels exist between Glenn Caruso and Knute Rockne, especially his early coaching years at Notre Dame. Let's hope the Tommies go on to rack up the national championships. Maybe we should forgo air travel as well.

Was up North scouting out where we're going to hunt deer in another couple of weeks and it occurred to me that there are not a lot of songs that I could think of that have direct references to football. In fact, the only one that I know of is the following - and I had forgotten about it until I was re-listening to the album on Friday afternoon. It is on Meatloaf's Bat Out Of Hell album in the song "All Revved Up With No Place To Go". At the end of the first verse is, "I was a varsity tackle and a hell of a block, When I played my guitar, I made the canyons rock"

Anybody got any other football related melodies?

I didn't know Glenn started out as a Chemistry Professor.
The older the violin - the sweeter the music!

On hunting land, I own 40 acres of hunting land north of Duluth. I've been thinking about selling it the past few years, as it never gets used. Are people snapping up hunting land in those parts nowadays or is it something that will probably sit on the market for awhile if I decide to sell?

Actually, he's pursuing his PhD in Psychology. No joke.

Don't know how to answer that, personally, as I am not in the real estate business. This year my son and I will be hunting on State Forest land, North of Duluth - Just North of Pequaywan Lake Area in the Cloquet Valley State Forest on the East side of the Cloquet river.

Is your land near there? I'm somewhat interested - perhaps PM me if you want to follow through on this.

I could think of two off the top of my head:

And I bet 57 used to tap his toes to this oldie but a goldie:

EDIT: And this one is mentions basketball in the third verse but I haven't heard it for at least 35 years.  I laughed so hard when it popped up in my youtube search that I had to include it.

"Backfield in Motion", by Mel and Tim.  Million seller in 1969!

Backfield in motion, yeah,

MIAC week 9 2017

This will be a shorter version of my weekly contribution. St. John's has the week off this coming weekend.

The blowout game for the week will be Concordia traveling down to Carleton.

If there was going to be a true upset at this point in the season, it would be Bethel knocking off St. Thomas at St. Thomas. Could it happen? Yeah, but I think the Tommies have already learned their lesson against Stout and won't make the same mistake twice in a season. If it does, no one will be happier than I would be. If you look at the MIAC stats, you see some troubling trends for these two teams for the chance of an upset actually happening.  This is the last meaningful test for the Tommies before the play-offs, as they can coast afterwards. (Sorry Gustie and Ole fans.)

The last two games this week, are again "pecking order" games. Hamline travels to Augsburg in the battle of one win MIAC teams. Whoever loses this game will most liokely end up just above Carleton, the only team they will have defeated this year.  On average, the Auggies are putting up two scores per game more than the Pipers so far this year. That, along with the home field advantage gives the edge to Augsburg. (Forgot this was "The Hammer" game - thanx for the reminder AO)

The other game for bragging rights is between Gustavus and St. Olaf. The Oles trail the Gusties in points per game average by just three-tenths, but give up a full six points on average on defense for the year. These two teams are also playing at Gustavus. If the Oles can win this game, they win the (presumed) tie-breaker between the two teams, as they finish with Concordia and St. Thomas. Gustavus will most likely go one and one for their final two games, as they face St. Thomas and finish with Carleton. I'll guess that the odds makers are leaning towards the Gusties, but not by much. This could end up being the game of the week - and two weeks in a row the Oles pull off a narrow victory. If Gustavus wins and Bethel loses, then there will be three teams tied at 3 and 3 in the MIAC. This game is too close for me to call.
