Since we're getting artistic, the music talk reminds me of probably the most famous poem about football (probably a small category, but still). James Wright's Autumn Begins in Martins Ferry, Ohio.

In the Shreve High football stadium,
I think of Polacks nursing long beers in Tiltonsville,
And gray faces of Negroes in the blast furnace at
Benwood, And the ruptured night watchman at Wheeling Steel,
Dreaming of heroes.

All the proud fathers are ashamed to go home.
Their women cluck like starved pullets,
Dying for love.

Therefore,
Their sons grow suicidally beautiful
At the beginning of October,
And gallop terribly against each other's bodies.

Eden Prairie might be a finalist for the "Dickhead Play of the Year" award in MN high school football. This past Wednesday they were up 28-10...after taking a knee two plays in a row Eden Prairie runs power to score a TD and go up 35-10 w/ 1:13 to play in the game.
Not that I feel much love for EP or Edina.

You can watch it here...just scroll up to the 2:49:00 mark to watch them take a knee twice and then pound it in against a team that isn't even giving 10%.

I think the most famous footbawww poem is "The Autumn Wind" by Steve Sabol. So badass.

Also, that poem by James Wright is depressing. Doubly so when you think of how geographically close to Steubenville those places are. Reminds me of "All the Right Moves", "Varsity Blues", or "Friday Night Lights."

Yeah, I can't get too excited about calling that a dickhead play.  A strange sequence of plays, sure.  EP does kneel down on two plays, but with well over 2 minutes to go, and they're not exactly in a victory formation.  The defense should have been ready for anything.  And then the play they scored on, they did it out of the same formation and it wasn't anything tricky.

Weird?  Heck yes.

It was a bit odd. But they would not have been able to run the clock all the way down, so I don't understand why they are even kneeling it in the first place.

Good call on Autumn Wind, forgot about that one; of course adding Facenda's voice could make my poetry sound epic. Few weeks ago found myself on YouTube and suddenly disappeared into songs of NFL Films wormhole.

And yes on the depressing aspect of Wright's. I first heard it in a voiceover on a football doc and the guy reading it was....well, I can't think of name. Familiar voice artist. But his reading it just added to the sadness of it. Wait, found it!

When teaching about the Vietnam War, I love to use music to help students understand the different points of view about the war.  Merle Haggard's "Okie From Muskogee" is one of the classic songs I use to balance out the many anti-war songs from the late '60's and early '70's.  Merle mentions that, "football is still the roughest thing on campus, and the kids here still respect the college dean."

The classic...The Bears Still Suck polka

"We don't really hold a grudge 'cause this is all in fun
As far as football rivalries we're both number one
Still we wouldn't mind seeing Ditka run over by a truck
'Cause the Bears...Still...Suck

The Bears still suck, the Bears still suck
The Bears still suck, the Bears still suck
They really really really really really really suck
Yes the Bears...Still...Suck"

Well in that case....

We are the Bears Shufflin' Crew
Shufflin' on down, doin' it for you.
We're so bad we know we're good.
Blowin' your mind like we knew we would.
You know we're just struttin' for fun
Struttin' our stuff for everyone.
We're not here to start no trouble.
We're just here to do the Super Bowl Shuffle.

;D
