Speaking of the Tommies, there was victory formation debacles and excitement in that insane Case Western Reserve-Carnegie Mellon game. Carnegie is kneeling to end the game, but on second down, the QB delays it a bit and after Case defender touches the QB, a Carnegie lineman shoves the dude. Unsportsmanlike conduct on the offense stops the clock with 33 seconds left. Case still had one timeout, so instead of game ending -- which would have happened with the kneeldown after 3rd down, assuming Case took timeout after 2nd -- Carnegie has to punt. Blocked punt returned for a TD to give Case the lead. And by the way, all of this happened inside Case territory, at like the 40! That's where Carnegie was kneeling!

The debacles continued as CWR kicked worst squib in history and Carnegie kicked tying FG. CWRU wins in OT.

So I guess strategy going forward could be to try and bait offensive linemen into personal fouls on victory formation plays.

The only thing I like about UST's plethora of 2 point conversion attempts in the last couple of games is that it gives them a chance to practice them prior to the playoffs which maybe useful.  Otherwise it was rather classless which is about what I expect.

The intent behind it is actually I think the opposite. Playoff opponents get your last three games. Hence, put a bunch of stuff on film and hope your playoff opponents might waste 10-15 min of practice time that week Worrying about it or keeping 1-2 guys back from a FG attempt, reducing the likelihood it gets blocked.

A. I made a mistake and typed 3rd quarter when it was actually the 2nd. But don't fool yourself into thinking that there was time for an Ole comeback. In that situation U$T would have been better off taking 5 yard delay of game and give the punter a chance to practice his coffin corner kicks. Any chance in the playoff quarters, semifinals or Stagg Bowl that U$T would go for it on 4th and 10 from the opponents 41? Not very likely...with their defense I would try to pin an opponent inside the 5.

B. As for the 2 point attempts...I don't think I ever said anything about running up the score...however this game was over before the opening kick and everybody at the game likely knew that. Going for two three times in the first half just doesn't make sense to me.

Caruso does these things all the time in games.  None of this is new.  He's aggressive, he's unconventional at times, and he owns every decision and outcome.  Sure the optics don't look great at times, but he's consistent if nothing else.  It's up to him to decide if these types of decisions will serve the team well during a deep playoff run.

He may be classless in your view, but he's consistent.  None of what Caruso did yesterday with 2pt conversions is new.

Yep, he's classless.  He gets two trophies.  If I were a St. Thomas fan I'd be greatly embarrassed.

This.
+k.
I'm not sure why any of this is ever a surprise to anyone. It's a very consistent philosophy. Perhaps you dislike the philosophy and that's fine. But it is clear and methodical, with a future purpose in mind.

Has anyone else looked at the D3 projected brackets? http://www.d3football.com/playoffs/2017/final-playoff-projection

If so, what's your thoughts? Do we want to see a Tommie/Johnnie rematch in round two? It'd be nice if it could happen in round three or later, but I have no solution to the dilemma. Thoughts?

Edit - the real thing will be out in a little over a half an hour, so it might be a moot discussion.

I don't think there is much other option.  Unless UST gets pushed into another bracket then it's pretty much a certainty.  I don't personally mind, however, because it's got to happen again so let's get to it early.

If it shakes out this way, 5th year seniors on both teams will have likely been involved in SEVEN Tommie Johnnie games.  I'd much rather see these two teams have their own paths through the brackets vs. one being eliminated by the other in round 2.  I'd like to think with Wartburg, Oshkosh, Illinois Wesleyan and North Central at least generally all within the 500 mile radius, other bracket combos could be assembled.  Saying that, i also realize that IWU and SJU are outside the 500 mile radius.

(Also, I don't think anyone is surprised by Caruso or doubts his consistency.  That's kind of the point.)

I expected to come on here this afternoon and see a bunch of playoff talk, but no, just a bunch of over grown babies complaining and wringing their hands over UST and Saint Caruso.  It might be mild outside, but the snowflakes are abound and plentiful.

Perhaps. Every time this comes up the "He went for 2. He went for it on 4th down. OMG what an a-hole" stuff just seems a little silly. But that's probably just my biased Tommie perspective. If it sets us up to have a rhythm going into the playoffs, in a game of inches and milliseconds, I guess some negative optics could be worth it.

I especially like the 33 yard run late in the 4th quarter to hit 80+ and the 4th quarter field goal up by 70.
