Yes. It sounds like talks have heated up again between Mayo, UST, and a local partner health system.

In both NIH (strictly quantitative research & academic funding) and US News (Mayo gets  residual reputation weight in US News that carries a BS factor to it) they are on the edge of top 20. Ok, but not great, and it hasn't moved much in the last two decades.

Also, the proof will be in the pudding if a deal were to come together what exactly it would look like. The all powerful Mayo Clinic will not be handing over their med school and say "here you go." It will start with a small class as a satellite program to Rochester, and then maybe evolve to a family med residency deals with a a health system. In short, fellowships in Neurosurgery, and biomedical research between engineering and the med school on genomic sequencing wont be seen at UST anytime in the next decade or two. It is a LONG journey to get to where Wash U, Emory, and Hopkins are.

That makes sense. What about the Mayo site in Minneapolis? Is the medical school doing anything at that location?

More of a really expensive living, breathing billboard than anything else. Its strictly sports med, performance training for athletes, and ortho (clinic - no surgery). I would guess some sports med and ortho residents & fellows float through from time to time though. Mayo has been hesitant to have too big of a presence in the metro for a few reasons.

1. They have a monopoly in southern mn and can basically tell health plans to take a hike when it comes to rate negotiations. The same isn't true in the metro. Most big companies carve out mayo for non-execs because rates are high.

2. They don't want to bite the hand that feeds them. They have a reputation as the king for complex care. If they trudge too far north they are competing with one of their biggest referral sources.

3. They just went to the state for significant tax revenue to be allocated to them for a "destination medical center" in Rochester. If they start propping themselves up in the metro, I think it would turn some heads as to what taxpayers from all over the state just gave them in Rochester

4. They don't care too deeply about the metro. Its one area of many they get patients from. Mayo's market isn't MSP. It's more or less the entire planet for those that can figure out how to get to them and pay for it.

I would guess that is why they are looking at UST and a local health system with hospitals for training and teaching (Allina makes the most sense). Fairview is out because of the U tie-in. This could be extremely beneficial for St. Thomas. Don't get me wrong, I really like the concept. Its just that it is a slow, methodical plodding process to achieve the goals set out.

I would be REALLY excited to see another MIAC school or two go the Augsburg route. Augsburg fired up a PA program some years back and is filling a massive community void in training the next bright wave of Physicians Assistants. These PA's will help fill large shortages in primary care and rural health care. Even with Augsburg's program there are not enough coming out of school right now.

When Tommies learn how to use apostrophes the school's standing in fake academic rankings is going to take off in the same way the football team did with Caruso.

You Johnnie's sure our nitpicky.
Isn't that nitpickie?

Really?  Academic bowl?  That's what we decide to poison these pages with?  I thought/hoped it would die yesterday.

UST and Mayo is a pipe dream of status obsessed Tommies. Nothing in it for Mayo.

Can we return to football, beer and wrestling already?

There is a lot more to it for Mayo than meets the eye.

What about the MIAC all-sports competition. 3 out of 4 for Toms aint bad is it. http://miacathletics.com/about/honor_history/all_sports_competition/index

I know Johnnies here hate hoops, but they are projected to be quite the power this year. Tommies winning in Golf and Johnnies in basketball. What is this world coming to.

I'm quite bored with the vacuum cleaner school coming in this week. No chatter, other than the creative blog post.

Forgot to note those in my long winded post. St Kate's has the PA and NP track. Bethel's is a great addition for the school and conference!

Rutter is the best QB SJU will have faced all year, by some margin. NCC over SJU by 13.

Actually, I have it on good authority that "something just short of a merger" talks are ongoing. Mayo is a very small medical school, which would benefit from being attached to a national university. Aside from the U of M, which has its own school, UST is the only major national university in MN.

Come back, please!  Anything to change the conversation. Even these delusional ramblings of yours.

At least it's more relevant to this continent than Australian footy.

Did I miss anything ? Since I only read short posts - what's an academic bowl? Alphabet soup?
The older the violin - the sweeter the music!

Mr.MIAC

Bringing it back to football, if UST partnered with Mayo, I'd imaging the kinesiology program (popular amongst football players) would go through the roof.
