Also from the same conference as Kenyon, the NCAC, in the last eight years Denison University has won three national swimming and diving national championships, and finished 2nd 4 times.
In this century the UW LaCrosse men have swept the DIII indoor and outdoor track and field national titles 7 times.  The Wisconsin schools generally dominate track and field.
And since 2009 North Central's men have won six cross country national championships and finished 2nd twice.

Dang.  There must be some insane coaching in those programs.

Wrestling in these two programs and football at MUC(k). Where else?  I can't think of anything.

Kenyon men's swimming has 34 national titles.  Runner up is Johns Hopkins with 3.

A few years back I volunteered at the D3 National Swim Meet which was being held over at the U of M aquatic center. I can tell you that Kenyon swim program is big time! They had to have over 100 team members (not all competing, but there none the less) They had a huge contingent of parents and students following them. They took up over half of the seating and were as loud and enthusiastic as any indoor/arena event I have ever witnessed at the D3 level. It put a SJU/UST basketball game to shame.

The Battle of The Burgs is equally insane. In Waverly they will have 2,000 in attendance I am sure.

Pretty slow in here.
Shall we discuss the 2017 D3 football home* attendance rankings led by St Thomas or has everyone had enough fun with that on Twitter?

2018 and beyond will tell the tale if the 2017 season with a "Home" game played at Target Field was an outlier. If 2017 is not an outlier, then the Tommies will be either 1st or 2nd in attendance in 2018. If the "Home" game at Target Field was the overwhelming factor, then it will show up in the numbers. This whole debate is the fault of the SJU administration for allowing the game to be played at Target Field. It was a novelty and a fun experience, but make no mistake it should never be allowed to happen again. The Tommies sports marketing department won this big time.
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

DuffMan

Without the "home" game at Target Field, U$T drew:

Eau Claire - 5048
Concordia - 5150
Bethel - 1649
GAC - 1496
Eureka - 1037
Berry - 1297

Total draw of 15667 (13343 without the playoff games)

A tradition unrivaled...

Absolutely it's an outlier unless we continue to move our Tommie-Johnnie home game to a bigger venue. The Tommies won big but I doubt SJU comes out looking too bad in it either. It's a fun little fact to throw out in recruiting and I don't think UST would be afraid to do it again, Target Field, CHS, Allianz or wherever. With or without St John's. Maybe the Bethel game in a few years?

I don't understand this type of thinking, why wouldn't SJU do it as well? Have the game there every year $$! SJU should want the Tommies to have it at a larger venue so they can outdraw the Tommies and essentially making it a home game for the Johnnies. Winning the D3 attendance stat is meaningless the only folks that look at that stat are the ones that won it. The only stat that counts is wins and losses. A larger venue only favors the Johnnies. Am I wrong here?

No you are not wrong. The Johnnie-Tommie bickering will at times supersede logic.

Probably something to do with losing the magic of the Natural Bowl filled with Johnnies and Tommies baking bread at the tailgate or whatever they do there besides drink a lot of beer.  ;)

Love the bickering comment! Maybe SJU would like to limit the number of their alums they lose in front of?  ;D

I don't understand the sentiment that SJU shouldn't allow this to happen again?  I would wager that the players enjoyed the experience, and there was plenty of positive exposure for both teams, so why not?

I think a game with anyone but SJU at a venue like that would be a major failure.   No other fan base will draw like SJU.  With a good BU team in a late season de facto conference championship game, you'd be lucky to get 12K in the stands, and BU isn't as predictably competitive as SJU, so planning for that matchup a year or two in advance wouldn't work.

Is it a widely held SJU feeling that the Target field thing was bad, or just the curmudgeons that choose to parrot VOJ?   ;) What do others here think?

Generally I'd note that it should be Tommie-Johnnie, with the Tommies coming first since we won the game. However, the Johnnies are the clear winners when it comes to bickering and getting bent out of shape about perceived fraud by UST.

DuffMan

I think the Target Field game was fine as a one-time thing.  It was exciting and new and a neat way to showcase the game.  However, if it happens routinely, it's going to lose all that.  This is D3.  If I want to overpay to see a game in a huge venue, I'll go to a Gopher or Viking game.  I like seeing games on-campus.  Remember MIAC Dome Days?  Those games sucked.
