Speaking of faces that won't be around next year, it looks like Pagel resigned earlier this week. The press release says he resigned to pursue opportunities elsewhere. I wonder what opportunities are out there for a coach coming off an 0-10 season. Maybe he's done with football all together? Or maybe that's just coach-speak for "I was given two choices: resignation or dismissal"? The timing seems odd:  a little late in the coaching carousel and spring practices not far around the corner.

"Other opportunities"
give him a call for all your insurance needs OR used/new car purchases.

Any talk about who Carleton might be looking at to replace him? Any top internal candidates?

Maybe Gerald "Steinbrenner" Young will bring back Billy "Ramler" Martin?  :o

I've no idea. I didn't even find out about Pagel's resignation until this morning when I saw the press release so I'm not exactly in the loop. Maybe they'd have some success luring away a NESCAC coach if that's the profile they're looking for. Maybe they'll go with some assistant coach in the MIAC for that infra-conference familiarity. Maybe they hire a high school coach. I really can't say.

That's pretty late in the offseason to be starting from scratch.

Hope they get a good person in soon. A program with low numbers can't readily afford to lose a whole recruiting class, especially at a place as tough to get into as Carleton.

I hear Kurt Ramler might be looking for other opportunities.
Or Jim Gagliardi.

(Obviously, I am quite certain neither of them are in consideration). I am not sure whether I should fear Carleton trying to poach a UST assistant coach similar to St Olaf last year. St Olaf seems to have more institutional commitment to athletics and even then, I've heard that Kilian and staff has found it much harder than they even expected to recruit there. On the other hand, a bad head coaching job is a stepping stone to a better HC job and most coaches have the ego and confidence to believe that they can build something from nothing, in the most difficult of places.

For any moneyball/fantasy/data science types here's an interesting introduction to what the AFL are doing with real-time, in-game data streams.  Plus how the data is used post game for fantasy and game-play modelling.

What's chance is there that Carleton disbands their football program?

This offseason? I'd guess maybe 1%.

Why waste time hiring a coach?? Just fold it up.

Then try to schedule 3 non-conference games, that outta be real easy..... ::)
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

art76

MIAC non-conference games to date

Augsburg
9-1 vs. Ripon
9-8 at Concordia Wisconsin

Bethel
9-1 at Simpson
9-8 vs. River Falls

Carleton
9-1 at Macalester (Presumed because of last year's schedule)

Concordia
9-1 vs. Nebraska Wesleyan
9-8 at Whitewater

Gustavus
9-1 at Martin Luther
9-8 vs. Stout

Hamline
8-30 at Buena Vista
9-8 vs. Macalester

St. John's
9-1 vs. Stout
11-10 vs. Thomas More

St. Thomas
9-1 vs. Trinity International (NAIA)
9-22 vs. Eau Claire

St. Olaf
8-30 at Crown
9-8 vs. Martin Luther

Couple of observations - two night games this year, both away games, but St. Olaf at Crown is an easy drive for most if someone wanted to take in at least one extra game this season. Even with the mess at Carleton, I would expect them to keep their game with Macalester, so I put it on the schedule as a presumed event. The Johnnies will have the latest non-conference game hosting Thomas More on the last day of the season - not sure that's ever been done before. Lastly, both St. John's and St. Thomas have both of their non-conference games at home this season, so far, everyone else has a split home and away set up.
