Thought I would post this here considering the Grant family connections to SJU and the MIAC. The Grants have certainly had an impact on Minnesota sports the last 50 years. It's got to be tough on Bud.

Some may recall that I mentioned this but I was on that UMD team with Bruce Grant. It was a short 1.5 years but what a team UMD had back then with Malosky as coach and a ton of very good football players, most of them more athletically gifted than I was!! Bruce was always a kind, thoughtful guy and I always appreciated that about him. My first thought Faunch was also sympathy for Bud. The stories about Bruce and Malosky are all true, I saw it, lived it and received it myself from coach Mo as we all did.

My story continued when I transferred to Augsburg before I could be tabbed UMDBench and post witty stuff on the D2 forum.

Knew Bruce and Mo as well. You could tell Bruce grew up in rare air. Very composted guy ... more self-aware than a lot of young men his age.

And Mo was Mo. Hard-nosed as hell in his job. Had some tremendous athletes. Somehow found some amazing running backs in guys like Terry Egerdahl, Ted McKnight, Amory Bodin and Boyd Hansen -- yikes. McKnight and Egerdahl played in the old MIAC days. Early in D2,UMD went 10-0- and was passed over for postseason.

Like a lot of tough coaches, though, Mo had a very personable side away from the game. I lived a block from campus near Chester Park and he'd walk by and tease me about the need to paint my house. Solid family guy.

The MIAC got some players on the D3 Pre-Season All American first and second teams: http://www.d3football.com/awards/all-americans/2018-preseason

I need to pay attention to SJU's o-line a bit more.  Dan Greenheck has been getting some serious accolades, and I am sorry to admit that I'd never heard of him before.

Duff

He is a CDH kid. I know him and the family quite well. I went turkey hunting with him, his brother and father 3yrs ago on their family property near Nelson, WI.  He's great hard working kid, from a great hardworking family. He has a nice little edge to him as well, kind of a gritty throw back kid. You'd like him!

Big game this weekend for Hawthorn against the old foe, Essendon.  Essendon, as you may recall, disgraced themselves by running a systemic doping program that resulted in the two-year suspensions of 34 players by WADA, the international sports doping regulatory body.  WADA recently declared the Essendon program the worst they have ever seen in team sport.  Covered themselves in glory did the  'Dons.

Anyways, this game has big implications for the post season, a win needed by both teams to stay in the hunt and a loss meaning game over.  So there's a lot of talk that this is the most consequential game between these foes in 10 years.  And the HawthornFC.com.au website has been publishing a lot about the 2004 "Line in the Sand" game, including interviews with then captain Richie Vandenberg and tough man Campbell Brown.  Needless to say, the atmosphere has been heating up and a fierce contest is expected.  Dirty play all around (particularly by those no good Bombers).

I can't wait to take my seat at the G.

I've posted this before but for those that haven't seen it or who want to watch it again, the "highlights" from that infamous 2004 match.

That "Line in the Sand" game was a turning point in the fate of the clubs.  Hawthorn went on to Grand Final glory just four years later and then won three more straight just a few years after that.  While Essendon descended into political infighting and eventual doping.

But 2009 had an infamous moment when Essendon's Matthew Lloyd blind-sided Hawthorn's Brad Sewell and knocked him out cold.  The cowardly act marked Lloyd's last game as he was hit with a long suspension and chose retirement rather than come back in a return game against... the Hawks.  I'm not sure he would have left the field under his own power.

And now Essendon think they are on the way back with a chance to make the post season and show some grit.  This game means the season to Hawthorn as well.  Fireworks are definitely possible.  But which ever team cracks and goes the thug will almost certainly lose as it's the kicks between the big sticks that win the game, not the hits on the field.

Spectacular, duffman!  And just in time to cheer on the post-season.  PM me an address and I’ll send out your assortment of Hawthorn gear.

So, does anyone know Heckendorf well enough to give us a hint of what to expect from a new-look Johnnie offense?

I don't know him, but I would have to believe that sweeps to the short side of the field have a good chance of being eliminated from the playbook......
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

If not eliminated, I hope they're used sparingly so as to not become predictable.

I don't know Kole, either, but I'm hoping for some new wrinkles and adjustments.

He was on the Bison team that beat the Gopher in 2007.
