1. St. Thomas (7), 63
2. Saint John's (2), 58
3. Concordia, 48
4. Bethel, 44
5. Gustavus, 36
6. Augsburg, 28
7. St. Olaf, 23
8. Hamline, 16
9. Carleton, 8

So, the big question is which coach picked against Caruso?

So I followed the link and I think there is a typo, to quote: "2018 MIAC Football Preseason Coaches' Poll
MIAC head football coaches voted for every team in the conference except their own. Points were assigned for each vote (eight for a first-place vote, nine for second, etc.). Teams are ranked in order of highest point total to lowest, with vote totals listed and first-place votes shown in parentheses."

The total scores listed seem to show that the top team gets nine points and the second team gets eight points, and on down the line. I hope the above error was lifted from another source.

Edit - now that I've thought about it a bit longer, maybe it should have read eight points for first place and seven for second place, because each coach is only voting on 8 teams.

Here's an article on the MIAC website about the coaches poll with paragraphs on each team and everything.

If I were a betting man, I would say St. Olaf. There is no love lost between Caruso and Killian.

Augsburg's roster just came out and I don't see Kieth Anthony. No idea why.

Can you elaborate? I was under the impression that Killian got a good offer from St. Olaf, and that his departure from UST was amicable. Did Killian have issues with Caruso prior to leaving?

Obviously, the only one's that really know are the two coaches. You could be right and I could be totally off base (but I don't think so). Through speculation and hear/say, Kill may have initially left on good terms but my guess would be that taking a few of coach C's staff with him may not have sat well with Coach C. Now this could be justifiable for either side depending how it was done. Thus, it was probably one-sided until the 97pt throttling last fall. There you have it a sweet recipe for "bad blood" One could make a movie out of this.  ::)

Got it. As an aside, total blowouts aren't to everyone's liking. While some enjoy a slightly embarrassing 97-0 game that garners national media attention, others find satisfaction in more modest wins. I'd say something along the lines of 63-7 hits the sweet spot...

SJUrube

I've been hesitant to place Glenn in the upper echelon of coaches, that tier should be reserved for national champions, but after learning that his assistant coaches have been pulled from the employment scrapheap I'll certainly have to reconsider. Imagine turning around a program with a staff made up entirely of assistants with no prior experience. And I imagine he extended his graciousness in not poaching existing coaches to the broader private business sector as well. Meaning most, if not all, of his assistants came from the unemployment line. I feel like it's about time the media start crediting him with the record low unemployment I've been hearing so much about. But I think we all know Glenn wouldn't want to draw the attention to himself.

Looking at the roster and the new, higher number of coaches I will say this 6th place finish is the floor for the Auggies. As Kickoff said  GAC vs AU will be a big game. Including the multiple transfers, this Augsburg team looks great right now. #keepyourheadonaswivelMIAC

Kickoff has the following predicted records:

1. Tommies
2. Johnnies
3. Cobbers
4. Royals
5. Oles
6. Gusties
7. Auggies
8. Pipers
9. Knights

In my mind, I think the bottom is more sure than the top, places three through seven have more opportunity for being different at the end of the season.

And the S.C. Times proclaims USTd  as the "defending state champion." Sheesh, do they miss Frank R. ... although his old stuff still lingers promeniently around the site.

Mr.MIAC

Does anyone here collect the bags UST annually hands out at the MN State Fair? They go through a ton of them, so I figure someone here must have a few. Here's the new design. What do you think?

It's a huge game tonight against the Swans in Sydney.  The winner finishes somewhere in the top four with the seeding advantages that offers, the loser is in sixth and fighting an uphill battle through the finals.  The Swans beat Hawthorn earlier this year down in Melbourne despite the Hawks dominating the midfield and generating significantly more forward 50 entries.  The Swans kicked true for goal on their limited chances while the Hawks were very wasteful up forward in that early season contest.

Since then the Hawks defense has tightened up even further and their forwards have become the competition's most accurate scorers. But beating the Swans in Sydney is never an easy task, particularly when the game is so important. It should be a blinder.

Today's gameday picture features 35-year-old Shaun "Silk" Burgoyne who is playing his 356th senior game tonight and just signed a one-year contract extension for his 19th season of senior football. Incredible durability and silky skills have made him a long-time champion for the Hawthorn footy club.
