Re: Logos

If SJU wanted to do a logo switch, I'd go with the one that baseball uses.  It makes me think of old school SJU.

Sing us a song, you're the piano man
Sing us a song tonight
Well, we're all in the mood for a melody
And you've got us feelin' alright.

I think St Thomas SID Gene Mcgivern is confirming this, but when Pallini took back the season opening kickoff for a TD and then kicked the extra point on Saturday it was the first/only time that has ever happened in NCAA football (all divisions).

sjusection105

Looking back at the box score from Saturday, there is tremendous upside potential for the running game. Take out the QB runs & the WR sweeps what's left is 4 RBs with combined 103 yards. I know the passing game was productive and I know it's the first game with three linemen making their first start but I have to believe the is room for growth from this SJU line & RB combo. I hope I'm right.

I didn't notice it until this week.  One of my classmates pointed it out.

It seems the Johnnies are quietly letting the #1 inside the U disappear from the logo in official publications. I looked back and they've been using this new one since the end of June/early July.  The football team had the new logo in the pre-game notes for the UW-Stout game.

https://www.gojohnnies.com/documents/2018/8/29//090118_UWStout_GameNotes.pdf?id=1325

Don't expect a big rollout on the logo tweak.

I hear they are replacing it with a "2"

Notice how nobody in the place took a knee. Refreshing.

My casual fandom of NASCAR has left me with the observation that their key demographic is most likely not on the wrong side of systemic racial oppression.

Of course, I could be wrong, I just haven't heard of too many white southerners getting beaten, lynched, being denied the right to vote, not being allowed to marry white women, having their communities red-lined by mortgage companies, having to use separate bathrooms, restaurants and school buildings; being forced into indentured servitude; being forced to the back of the bus, having a 3 to 1 disparity in terms of incarceration particularly for non-violent drug offenses, or being shot to death police officers at a disparate rate of 2.5 to 1 (for crimes such as fleeing on foot (misdemeanor), selling loose cigs (I guess he was choked to death, but anyway) (misdemeanor),reaching for your ID when asked (not sure how that's a crime)); being maligned for having the audacity to suggest their lives merely matter (not they're superior, or better, just that they simply matter).

It's a guy with a vastly different American experience than you or I quietly and respectfully taking a knee to protest systematic racial oppression and police brutality (as one does when genuflecting: to lower one's body briefly by bending one knee to the ground, typically in worship or as a sign of respect).  Not exactly like they're burning the American flag at the 50 yard line.

Of course, since I'm predominantly libertarian I'm for the 1st amendment, the free market and minding your own business. So, I guess it's your choice to clutch your pearls watching a NASCAR event that features 100 so confederate flags attached to people's fifth wheels parked on the infield with such cool "patriotic" (read: treasonous) American phrases such as "The South will Rise Again." Anyway, how 'bout that Brad Keselowski!

MIAC 2018 Week 2

Well, week 1 is now behind us, along with its opening jitters. The MIAC did OK against non-conference opponents, coming away with a 7 and 2 record, which is what I predicted would happen. For the coming week we only have 7 games, as both St. Thomas and St. John's have a bye week and have their second non-conference games scheduled later in the season. Which, when looking ahead in the schedule just looks odd. The Johnnies get two weeks to get prepared for Gustavus, while the Tommies have two weeks to get ready for Hamline. It seems painfully obvious that both coaching staffs will need to ensure that those extra days are not wasted. 'Nuff said about that.

The first game is Augsburg at Concordia Wisconsin. While both teams won last week, the Falcons beat Finlandia, which is ranked 250th out of 250 in Kickoff this year. Augsburg worked hard for their win against Ripon. This will be a good opening road trip this season for the Auggies. I expect that they should finish the week at 2 and 0.

In the second game this week is River Falls at Bethel. Here we have two teams that both scored 41 points in their games last week. While that is odd, in and of itself, it is also prime doubled, not squared. Ahem. The big difference is that the Falcons shut out their opponent, while Bethel allowed Simpson to score 29. In fairness, Simpson is arguably a better team than MN Morris of the UMAC, ranked 248th out of 250 this year in Kickoff. I will go on record as saying the Royals should win this home opener, but I suspect it will be a nail-biter.

The third game is Lawrence at Carleton. This is probably the best chance for the Knights to get a win this season. And if they do, what a boost for the program and their new coach. They played the Scots well last week at Macalester, posting 38 points, which was more points in a game than all but one game last year. The Vikings won last week against Grinnell, ranked 242nd out of 250 in Kickoff this year. Anyone else starting to see a theme here? I think the Knights will also have a home opener win this season.

In the fourth game we have Stout at Gustavus. The Johnnies shut out the Blue Devils this past week, but as Stout travels two weeks in a row into the MIAC, this game is looks better for them. In fact, I wonder if the Gusties will even be competitive, as they struggled to put away Martin Luther, ranked 235th out of 250 in Kickoff this year. I think the Blue Devils split their record in MIAC play this year.

The fifth game this week is Luther visiting St. Olaf. The Oles beat up on Crown last weekend, ranked 247th out of 250 in Kickoff this year. The Norse took one on the chin against UW La Crosse. This will be another close game in the MIAC, and might become the game of the week, but I expect the Oles to pull this one out and be sitting at 2 and 0 after the dust settles.

The sixth game is the annual Paint Bucket game between Macalester at Hamline this year. I mentioned earlier that the Scots have already beaten the Carleton Knights. They stand a very good chance of having the best non-conference record against MIAC teams this year at 2 and 0, when they take on the Pipers this week. Being that this is a home game for Hamline, it should be a bit better than their loss to Buena Vista on the road this past Saturday.

The game of the week has to be Concordia Moorhead traveling down to UW Whitewater. Both teams had wins last week, the Cobbers popping the Prairie Wolves at home last week, and the Warhawks tearing apart the Spartans on the road. The Cobbers have to win this game to have any chance of winning the conference this year. And if they do win this game, they'll end up cracking back into the top 25, where they were in week 10 of last season. But, I don't see that happening. I expect the Warhawks will keep grinding away and end up winning by a couple of scores. It might even be a game where the teams trade scores in the beginning, which will make it a good game to watch.

So the part that really gets me is the players are employees of the different teams (let's not get into the whole white billionaires employing black millionaires) and there is an employee handbook/ code of conduct for every company I've ever worked for. So, let's just say these protesting players worked for Target and were a retail associate. As a retail associate, there is a dress code : red polo shirt & tan khaki slacks. I've guessing if a Target retail associate showed up for work in a royal blue polo & white slacks that they would be sent home and told not to return until they wore the approved attire.

This year the NFL agreed that the players who had an objection with the playing of the National Anthem were to stay inside the locker room. Is it so hard to follow direction? Especially when the vast majority of pro athletes struggle to adjust to "normal life, with a normal job" after their playing days are over. Wouldn't it make more sense to follow directions, collect the $$millions$$ for the 3-7 years they are in the league and then protest away.

That's all I'm saying.....

Since I didn't see or hear any of the Stout-Johnnies game this past weekend, I haven't posted anything about it.

I need to congratulate the J's on the win. If someone had told me ahead of time that SJU would score 27 I would have thought "close game." Not to be. In the past the offense hasn't been an issue. The team can usually score. It's been the defense, that seemed to turn the corner last year.

On the road this week at GAC. We'll see if the Devils can get on the board this game.
