I can't figure out if people here are being wilfully obtuse or if it's just natural.

In order to justify a change in rules, two things must be proven: a) that change is necessary, and b) the changed proposed is the minimum needed to address the issue.  Following this tried and true formula ensured that cure is not worse than the disease.

So let's see what the MIAC has done.

In regards to "a" we have nothing. The MIAC on the podcast gave no need argument other than it was smart, a point not self-evidently true. We've had a number of anecdotes presented here and one 20-year-old non-MIAC example from Pat on the podcast along with a couple UST examples here. My challenge is to ask if, all things being equal, were those anecdotes due to the heat or some other factor like poor supervision or unskilled medical staff.  Certainly there is no evidence presented that this is a widespread issue.

How about "b"?  Again failure. A concession that this may be the wrong move but one in the right direction is the argument. No demonstration of an incremental approach to the problem at all. No discussion of lesser moves considered and why they were ruled out. Just straight to this utterly disruptive choice.

So for those of you trying to shut down debate by somehow claiming to question the MIAC's decision here is tantamount to intentionally harming players, good luck with that silly game. I understand you're left hanging with nothing else as this decision is so poor that it can only be questioned.

SJU vs. GAC now at 7pm at St. Peter HS.  No, really . . .

I'm sorry, I don't wish to see any student-athletes at risk, but I think this is all pretty dumb.  There's gotta be a better way.

Wilful endangerment!   There is no better way and to ask the question neglects player health!

New age absolutists.

Another question that is entirely reasonable: can the temperature even be forecast accurately enough to make a threshold as precise as 86.1 meaningful?  Fortunately, we know the answer.

https://www.forecastadvisor.com/Minnesota/SaintPaul/55111/

For St Paul, the weather forecast predicts the temperature to within 3 degrees 78.7% of the time. Meaning that almost 1/4 of the time it's missed by more than three degrees.

Good luck with this policy, MIAC.  There are undoubtedly a near unlimited number of less obtrusive actions that could address have addressed hot play and considering the accuracy of the barometer you have nominated, a near unlimited number of more effectiveness ones as well.

That field is so close Gustavus could run a new line out there before the game if there's no reliable connection currently.

AO always seems to have the 411 on damn near everything Minnesota sports related and I mean that sincerely. He's a good follow on twitter.

Anyway AO, do you think the teams will use the normal college field locker rooms if the fields are that close or use whatever the high school teams use?

Forgetting for a moment the heat issue, it's pretty bizarre to have to move the game next door to a high school field, because I guess GAC doesn't have lights on their field? Must get some gray games late in the year.

So when you're having beers over at Glenn's place do you try to hold his hand or is that a no-no?

Hand holding must be a purple thing. I was at Waconia last freiday and their varsity held hands on their Wildcat Walk before the game. The youth players also had F.A.M.I.Y.  onthe back of their jerseys.

Correct -- Gustavus doesn't have lights. Neither does Bethel, Carleton, Concordia or St. Olaf, from what I could tell in a quick tour of our photos of MIAC stadiums earlier today.

Man, if SJU was on the "no lights" list I'm sure the Rev would have something to say about that!  ::)

I thought they were on the list. I can't image oil lamps would illuminate an entire field.  ;)

Another better answer, night games. Let's say that playing hot is a sudden new danger, a point not proven but pretend it is. Then schedule all MIAC games for night play.  Having the Gusties and a few other teams play at the local high school every week will have a far smaller impact than moving the game to the same high school with a day to go.

I'm sure that after a year of this, you probably will see some schools make those decisions. The fact that only Hamline, SJU and UST have lights right now is going to slow this down, however. (Edit: Adding Augsburg.)

Has the world gone mad??!!  :o
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!
