With the family in Chicago this summer and we stayed near Loyola University Chicago. A beautiful campus, right on the shore of Lake Michigan, it had the look of St. Thomas on steroids but a co- worker said it was really for kids that can't get in to DePaul University.  Even Loyola is a safety school.

Thinking about the "safety school" discussion, UST is very similar to Villanova. They're both the premier Catholic university in their region. At the national level people might think of both institutions as safety schools. However, within their respective regions, the general public views them as highly prestigious.

I held a research position at Chicago and have lots of friends who went to Northwestern. I don't think many undergraduates on either campus want to change places.

Hey I am comfortable in my own skin as it is. I have 2 great students in my family and I am the son of a Phd, Dr. of Biochem research professor at the U of M so I know what real intellect looks like even though I seem to only express it in my children! That said,  I am ok with the status of MIAC schools. I still put St. Olaf in a tier above UST and yes Marketing has played a huge role in the perceived status of UST.

Marketing is  a major factor in people's perceptions about many things. As a retired LEO from one of those alphabet Agencies not the FBI, I can tell you the same is true of that group. There's an old joke about a Law Enforcement Expo, where a presentation was made by local Police, DEA and ATF, showing the talents of dogs utilized by those agencies, followed by an FBI dog. I can't tell it on here because I would be banned for life for language. Try to find someone who knows the joke if you're interested. Let's just say that due to recent events, the FBI has taken some big hits to their vaunted status. We were fond of saying that with their resources and funding, they should catch more people by accident than we did on purpose.

I've always sort of considered St. Thomas to be the ultimate safety school success story, since their benefactor O'Shaughnessy couldn't hack it at St. John's and was able to find a safe landing with the Tommies. Good for those guys.

Amen on the announcers and I could not get VOJ on WDGY but original rock and roll. That was better than the Gustie crew. 

I ran into that issue a few years ago with a night game at Eau Claire.  WDGY only partners with the "Johnnie Radio Network" for day games.
