Coach Gagliardi is a source of pride for all of us and the center piece of what has become St. John's University.

Fall Saturday afternoons in Collegeville have helped make SJU one of the great small colleges in the country among the many great ones in Minnesota.

The Man, The Lessons, The Inspiration, The Entertainer and The Winningest College Football Coach at 489 victories has passed along.

Coach Gagliardi will be shining bright next Saturday in Collegeville.

Hail to the Chief.  Long Live Gags.

With John's passing, I've been thinking about whether or not we should have the typical Tommie-Johnnie week banter this year. Thoughts?

First and foremost RIP Coach John you were an amazing man.

As for yesterday result whether the Johnnies move up move down or stay at #9 means little today. Saturday we will find out who is real and who is posing. Bethel has a solid team they always seem to give SJU fits and yesterday was no exception. If I remember correctly I believe I picked the Royals to finish 3rd in the MIAC :)Yes we saw some things to be concerned about and the Johnnies certainly should not have been looking past the Royals but lets be real they were. The optics tell us UST should win on Saturday and maybe they will and maybe they will do so going away, but if you truly understand rivalries then you know anything can happen. You Tommie fans are so smug and rightfully so but using results against common MIAC opponents is of little value as we know your program exercises little class in running it up on helpless opponents and the Johnnies handle things a little different.

Let Johnnie Tommie week begin!!!!

And how is beating St. Scholastica last year 98-0 handling things a little different?

My condolences to Coach Gagliardi's family, to all who knew and loved him, and to all of Johnny Nation.  The impact he made on the lives of young men was profound and lasting.

I say carry on but in honor of John and his dislike of said shirts, let's not wear any of the vulgar T-shirts while we post!

Always loved John's "story" of when they won a national title and the president of the college, "Father Coleman, a good Benedictine monk, he gave a sterling talk and finished it by saying, 'John, we love you.' I thought, boy, that was pretty good. Next time I saw him I said, 'That's great, I appreciate that. But are you still going to love me if we start losing to St. Thomas?' 'Oooh, John, we're going to still love you. And boy we're going to miss you a lot too.'"

(the fact that John's joke sort of came true, a part of him probably appreciated the irony).

I think it was Aaron Krych, who was a senior when I was a sophomore, who told the story of a time he was walking home from class wearing a Tommies Suck shirt.  John rolled up, lectured Krych for wearing such a shirt, and made him take it off and throw it in a garbage can right then and there, leaving him to walk home shirtless.  ;D

RIP John

Seeing John in person at Northwestern in '05 and at Bethel in '07 felt like what I imagine getting to see Bronko Nagurski or Mickey Mantle felt like.   A legend that was still getting out on the field and still cared deeply about his team.

John's passing is troubling for many reasons. One is that the Johnnies will be looking to honor his legacy on the field this Saturday. I see them rising to the occasion, so it will probably be a closer contest than we've seen in some recent years. Prediction: UST - 63, SJ2 - 14.

Just sad. Thoughts and prayers to the Gagliardi family.

From the bottom of my heart, a billion thanks to John for all he's done for those of us who played for him.  He was a treasure, and his legacy will endure.  My heart is heavy--rest in peace, my friend.

Hey Duff, Very sorry to hear about this. He was one of the greats, and impacted college football in so many ways. I can't imagine the personal effects he had on his players, such as yourself. I feel honored and thankful to have just seen him coach a game in Collegeville back in 2003. All the best to you and the entire Johnnies family.
A packed student section behind an end zone cheering on guys they will actually see in class on Monday is almost as cool as The Streak.

I Hope my last post, about chatter during Johnnie-Tommie week, didn't sound insensitive. I posted a tribute to JG on my previous post. (I don't know how to bring it in). I think he would have wanted us to go on. While the tributes roll in, I will keep him, his family and his St. John's family in my prayers. As best we can, let us go forward! ✝🏈
