Here's Albion guys talking about that game. The conditions, the Johnnies "never practicing" but the game being a brutal affair. Includes the controversial pass! Impossible to tell here if it hits the ground but the way the receiver describes it....eh, I think Johnnies might have had an argument. SJU 6 turnovers in 19-16 loss.

Good stuff.  That was just before I started following the Johnnies, so it was cool to see some of that footage.

Love the striped Collegeville endzone, classic.

I noticed this in the footage, but it's not really about the Johnnies. Why is it that even moderately recent past footage looks so flaccid? I see this all the time with clips of games (NCAA and NFL) that I remember watching live on television, and the footage looks ancient. Movies and television from the same era look comparatively pristine. Any technical experts out there? Are providers downsampling this stuff?

Probably because it was shot on film or video tape. I bought a Sony Hi-8 Digital camera about 20 years ago just before my first was born. I thought the quality of the video quality was unbelievable at the time. I watch it now can't believe how strange it looks. I've copied about 5-10 hours of it to DVD and have about another 20 to go. I just hope the camera mechanisms hold up enough to do that.

Look at this from the 2003 Stagg Bowl.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FBjwGVUWs8M&t=190s
It's the EPSN broadcast recorded on my Sony camera which I then edited on my old eMac. It was only 15 years ago. Remember when wide screen video looked strange? Now the old square video is hard to watch.

BTW...it's awesome watching these 2003 Stagg Bowl highlights.

YSU opponents in the 1AA/FCS championship have been Marshall (3 times), Boise State, McNeese State, Georgia Southern and James Madison. They have played NDSU in the playoffs and have lost twice if memory serves me.

Is my memory correct? Jake Theise walked away from football after the 2003 Stagg Bowl victory. I remember he was Pre-Med & wanted to concentrate on the books, he was a Soph. With winning the championship he accomplished that goal and went out on top. That's how I remember it. Correct me if I'm wrong.
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

I remember that I watched that 2003 Stagg Bowl, but I didn't remember much of the game.

Thanks faunch. I just watched the whole video and that was awesome. The Tice TD right at the end of the 1st half, the speed of Blake Elliott, outstanding.

What a great SJU team that was.

I saw the wide angle live-only saw highlights after the game. Man, live is the way to go! I still remember my 6 year old son spilling his popcorn-that was a tragedy to him. But he had a great picture with Keller after the game- wearing his #1 jersey.

I saw Linnemann play here in the 2000 playoffs and thought he was great. Watching Keating sling the ball in these highlights was equally impressive.

I believe it was that plus some injury issues. Maybe concussion, but I'm not positive.

Best video on YouTube, faunch.  I watch it every so often (I have it favourited) and am always grateful you put it together.

Must we go on and on about the 2003 Stagg Bowl? Everyone knows Mount Union was the best team in the country. All they had to do was show up. Why even play the game. We all knew who would win! Hey, they beat Bridgewater 66-0 in the semi-finals. St John's didn't stand a chance!
Problem is, someone forgot to tell The Johnnies. They made Mount look mortal. The Raiders didn't really play their JVs, it just looked that way. Who was that #2? Blake Elliott? Never heard of him. The kid was a one man wrecking crew. Never liked him.
I, personally, never want to see any video of that game. Don't want to see any photos or read any stories. Let the words "2003 Stagg Bowl" be stricken from every temple, from every obelisk, from every ESPN accounting of the game. Let the words "2003 Stagg Bowl" never be spoken in the realm.
Oh, what the hell, I'll watch it again. St. John's certainly put on a show. The better team definitely won. Hope you get top seed in the West. Go Johnnies! 😃

Apologies to Cecil B. DeMille for certain thoughts used in this rambling.

I was just thinking about that 2003 team.  One of the more remarkable tidbits about them was that all 5 of those offensive linemen were first-year starters! :o
