Speaking of hypothetical flags, I started to get out of my chair after Kilgore blocked the quick-kick because the O lineman that had been blocking him was practically tackling him after the blocked kick so he could not get to the ball. But BU covered the ball in the end zone and all was well in the world.

100% saw the same thing. It was the QB Perra. He was hugging Kilgore. Totally blatant and I would have run out there and pulled the ref's flag myself if it didn't already go for a TD. Those quick kicks were ugly and I hope we reconsider how we were approaching it. The block seemed inevitable.

Agree, I remember thinking to myself after the previous QK, it's only a matter of time....
I didn't even notice Perra taking the customary steps backward before the snap. Seemed like he was kicking it much closer in than in the past.

I was thinking the exact same thing. Even if you don't take the steps backwards just before the snap, he should just line-up a step or two deeper, nobody would notice so it would accomplish the same thing and disguise the play.

If you watch I'd like to know on the blocked quick kick what the two guys in the back of the end zone might be pointing at? Did they think the guy that recovered the fumble was down before he got into the endzone?  You can see them at the 4:13 and 4:46 mark.

I also think the ref could have called a block in the back on Bethel at the 2 or 3 yard line on the Roste TD run (1:31 mark).

Yep, I concur it was Perra, not an O lineman.

I see the players stumbling and falling on one another at the end of Roste's run, no harm, no foul.

But it certainly looks like the BU player recovering the blocked kick had his knee down at the one while in possession of the ball before his momentum carried him into the end zone.

No UWO, Tommies, or Linfield. If someone would have thrown that at me before the season I would have said I'll have what your smoking.

A little more parity in D3 Football is great for the sport.

Tangent thought - with the MIAC finishing the season with 3 teams in the top 16 of the D3 Top 25, and having a total non-conference record of 12 and 5, plus the St. Thomas NAIA win, mean that the MIAC will be ranked the number 1 conference in next year's Kickoff? Or does Bethel or St. John's have to beat Whitewater for that to happen?

Are you talking about the fan? I only see 1 guy pointing. He's standing next to somebody with a purple hat, so maybe they were UST fans thinking he was down? That's a tough one to call during live play without replay. I watched it a few times and lean towards that he didn't actually have possession until he was up and on the way into the endzone.

Given how much we got outplayed, it's weird to think that without that punt block (I know, I know) we might have won.

I think a win over UW-Whitewater would help but I think the overall depth of the WIAC (and the strength at the bottom) keeps them on top by a decent margin. The top few times might vary from year to year and our top 3 might beat their top 3 this year, but I'd need to see that be a clear trend. As is, Oshkosh has beat St Thomas and St John's the last 2 times the teams have played.

Doubt it.  We've still got Hamline, Auggie Tech, and Carleton...

VOJ interviewed Gary during last night's SJU basketball home opener. Gary shared that Brinker would likely not practice until Thursday and would likely be questionable for Saturday. He didn't say as much but it appears the thought process last week and this week are that we can win without him right now and let's try to get him healthy for when he's really needed. The good thing is that it gets a young beast like Wozniak and others a few reps if we need them to play in the playoffs.

What’s Brinker’s problem?  Has anyone heard?  Pulled/strained muscles would be my guess.  The muscles are very fiddley and delicate in there (around the hips where I believe he’s carrying the injury)  and when they break down they take ages to heal.  Not debilitating but very painful under stress and they take ages to heal.

Issue with his hip. No info on what specifically the issue is..

I say sit him this week no matter what.

I definitely had that thought after the game - the UST defense bent a lot, but beyond the big Gibas and Roste runs in the first two posessions, they didn't break all day and were able to keep Bethel out of the endzone.

Regarding the targeting call.

1.  It was a really violent hit. I get why the flag came out if for nothing more than a reaction by the official.

2.  But it seemed like he hit him square in the chest with his shoulder. Which would make sense since the TE was reaching up for the ball and the CB was giving up 5-6 inches in height. What made it look bad was that the impact into his chest made his head snap hard as his momentum came to a screeching hault.

It was right in front of the BU bench but no coaches really reacted or were chirping to officials. Rather the other official came running in to conference with the line judge and ref. I think they got it right, and probably handled it correctly. Throw the flag then talk it out if there's doubt. What you can't do well is not throw it. Imo, when a crew picks up a flag it is rarely because they got pressured to do so and almost always because they had a good conference to discuss what everyone saw.

And also, Wartburg and ML are boring. I'm with Duff, where's all the chatter?!?
