I don't think St John's will have any trouble with Martin Luther. Whitworth will undoubtedly be our 2nd round opponent. I think they'll be more of a challenge, although the real test will begin in the quarterfinals against Mary Hardin-Baylor.

This pisses me off... the one year when we could have played the Johnnies in the second round... we have to send the RATS! Sorry but I'm pissed we didn't do better in regular season! Good luck to the Johnnies... I hope you guys go all the way! BlueNote!  :-*

I have really missed the arrogance of the playoff banter

Ummmm....I am curious as to why anyone from the MIAC would "think/contemplate/concern themselves with the East. This is Mount's world and we allow you all to live in it!

It would be a great day if SJU & Mount would square up in the Stagg Bowl.  We are a bit dinged, but I think we might just be ok.

Well you highlight the difference right there.  You can already contemplate the Stagg.  We've got a lot of work to do before that's a real possibility.

Cockiness/Expectations/Stupidity?  Very possible Oz.  Although I try to temper my expectations as years roll on.  Mount does things in a way that I believe no D-III school does in the country.  It's not luck/happenstance/money.  It's success breeds success, administration had that "oh ****" moment when they figured out that a national championship football team attracts recruits & students, and things just went crazy from there.  LK was the spear, and VK has carried the torch.  One day when it ends, I will be that old man (**** I am already old) pontificating about Mount & all they were/etc.

;)

Coming from a Mount poster I don't consider it arrogance at all.  History says it is more likely than not Mount will be in the Stagg.

I've been on here a long time.  In the beginning I felt like several of your posters were kind of obnoxious.**  My observation is that over the years Mount posters have become rather modest. Not taking anything for granted and knowing what a great ride it's been.

Big fan of Larry Kehres. Looks like Vince has grown into the job.

** SJU had its fair share of obnoxious posters back then. Now we limit our obnoxious stuff to UST.

Question for SaintsFAN if he's still 'round these parts:  Could you rank St. Johns vs. Mount Union at QB and in the receiving department?  At full health, that is.

Yeah, we've ducked Linfield for years.  Now, we have a team that can compete, and Linfield ducks us!  :D

"Ducked" is a funny word to use for "lost in the first round."

Good question.  Do I think I can rank them for this year?  No.  I mean, I could but I've only seen Mount Union play against John Carroll in 2018, which wasn't Fulford's best day:  he seemed to be throwing off his back foot that day.  I generally don't pay too much attention to Mount Union until the playoffs.

Will Gillach is a baller at WR, but defenses can't ignore the other WRs.   A really big plus has been Erdmann calling his own plays when they go sugar huddle/hurry up.

Mount Union has a little more depth at WR and a QB who has won the Stagg Bowl.  I hope Fulford is close to 100% when they need him.

OK, so nobody is going to bring up the obvious... the 800 pound gorilla in the room, so I will.

Is the bloom off the rose at U$T3? Clearly from 2010-2014 U$T3 was able to get superior players in their recruiting classes than the rest of the MIAC. It seems that time has caught up with the school on Summit Ave.  SJU has gotten their share of CDH players over the past 4 years. St. Olaf & GAC perhaps are getting some too, I'm not sure. Also, the suburban kids appear to want a setting that is a little less "Capitol Cityesque" you know with all the crime & political corruption that comes along with St. Paul.  It just seems it's either talent or coaching or location that has been the downfall at U$T3, I'm not sure which is a bigger factor.

If you saw UST's freshmen class this year, the above wouldn't have been stated. The UST futures games have been sick with talent/potential. Trust me UST is not going away anytime soon.

Someone in the SCIAC board posed a question asking if Claremont-Mudd-Scripps could defeat Whitworth & if so, would they be able to defeat St John's. "SaintsFan" replied, "Having just watched St. Johns in person this past weekend, I'm going to say they only teams that can beat them are:  Whitewater, Mary Hardin-Baylor and Mount Union.  And they'll be a huge challenge for those three defenses, as well. Johnnie QB Erdmann is pretty special and has a great corps of WR's/TE's he is on the same page with." I apologize that I'm not familiar with easily quoting so will settle for copy & paste until I become more sophisticated with the board. I wonder what SaintsFan thought of attending a game in Collegeville at Clemens? I really hope his insight is accurate & obviously that St John's can take it all the way! Very excited with what is happening at St John's under Gary! I hope this is just the start of a very long run of historic seasons in Collegeville!

CMS (7-3) beat Northwestern "Bible" College of Roseville 14-3 in week 2. NW went 5-5 and lost to St. Scholastica 14-7 this year (that team SJU beat 98-0) last year. I might be proven wrong but I highly doubt CMS gets by Whitworth or that the game is even close. I believe Whitworth went 9-0.
Yeah, well our little "Bible" college is actually pretty impressive if you take a closer look at the schedules.
Northwestern MN   beat   Iowa Wesleyan   28-0
III   Iowa Wesleyan   is better than   Presentation   because Iowa Wesleyan beat Crown MN 44-7
and Presentation only beat Crown MN 42-14
NAIA   Presentation   beat   Waldorf   44-38
NAIA   Waldorf   beat   Dickinson St ND   23-22
NAIA   Dickinson St ND   beat   WI LaCrosse   35-17
III   WI LaCrosse   beat   WI Stout   29-23
III   WI Stout   beat   Gust Adolphus   24-23
III   Gust Adolphus   beat   Concordia Mhd   27-14
III   Concordia Mhd   is better than   St John's MN   because Concordia Mhd beat Hamline 55-0
and St John's MN only beat Hamline 51-0 , therefore Northwestern is better than St. John's.   Didn't even have to get a score from last year to prove my point.

This isn't uncharted waters for the current brand of UST football, Caruso will re-calibrate. If a "down year" is losing to a kid that could probably start for a Big 10 school next year (and would be #2 on the depth chart behind a Heisman contender if he stayed at Penn State) and then going into your last regular season game 8-1 against another 8-1 team who lost a close one to the same kid, I'll take it.

Caruso has opened up a new pipeline in Chicago, and it would appear from his non-conference intentions, he plans on putting a big footprint in that area. There's only so much talent to go around in Minnesota and Fasching (California kids) and Johnson (Florida kids) have picked up on that as well.

Johnson is a good enough coach and recruiter to architect a team capable of making a deep playoff run every 4 years or so. Honestly, he's probably one of the best coaches in the country for what he's capable of putting together based on his resources.

MIAC football is still, by aggregate, a two-headed UST/SJU monster IMO. But every now-and-then, Bethel can put it together and knock one of those teams off. Terry Horan and Concordia have that ability to sneak up and be on par with Bethel, as nobody in the MIAC recruits western Minnesota and eastern North Dakota/Bismarck except the Cobbers, but unless they are willing to bring their offense into the 21st century, they'll never be able to get over that 8-2 hump.
