Honestly, I think you're safe.

The big criticism of UND's football program is how incestuous they are in their hiring practices. They had an opportunity to hire Kalen Deboer who was coming off 4 NAIA National Championships in 5 years at USF and whiffed big time to take Bubba Schweigert, a mediocre defensive coordinator from a middling FCS program (Southern Illinois) just because he's from the Dale Lennon/Roger Thomas coaching tree and a "North Dakota Guy" from Jamestown, whose claim to fame is recruiting the UMD team that went on to win the D2 National Championship after he left for the Salukis. Now UND is coming off a 6-5 year, missing the playoffs for the second year in a row, despite having 3 of the best running backs in FCS football and a solid defense.

My guess is Danny Freund, the only offensive non-casualty from Chris Mussman's firing will get promoted to either QB coach or OC, or they'll make a run at Jake Landry, the running backs coach at Northern Illinois, who helped turn around UW-Lacrosse around as a one-and-done OC and was a grad assistant during UNI's Orange Bowl year (who happens to be a UND alum).

Meanwhile, Kalen Deboer is making twice as much as Bubba at Fresno State, is in line for a Power 5 HC job, and is averaging 50+ points a game.

Also, I can't think of one UND assistant that has ever played a down at NDSU. Heckendorf's next move will be to the MVFC, I just don't think it will be UND.

I hope Kole sticks around for quite a while.  FWIW, his wife is from the area (her mom was a teacher of mine in high school), so hopefully family ties can tip the balance in SJU's favor.  And here's hoping some of that John Gagliardi Football Legacy Fund makes its way to his wallet.  :)

Definite yes on the Gagliardi Fund putting some extra dollars in his wallet. We all like to be paid what we think we are worth.

I think SJU is more of sure thing but I do think Whitworth will be better than GAG and will hang around for at least a half. I can't believe you can win the Northwest Conference undefeated and only be comparable to the 4th team in the MIAC.

After the s*** that got slung on the NWC board the last two days I'm hoping for a triple monkey stomp.  I would love the triple stompout for maximum humiliations.  I know the players don't deserve the beatdown for poster behaviour (thank God for our sakes, eh, as the players would hate us all) but I want the Pirates to suffer.

Sure, it may be small of me.  But TFB.

Ol' buddy over there has got me really torn on this. An SJU win helps to justify that maybe St Thomas wasn't total trash this year BUT I also hate you guys and your stupid garbage school an awful lot. Tough decisions.

I know I may be in the minority, but the further MIAC teams go, the better for the MIAC, and that is an okay consolation prize to sitting this year out. I'll stop short of hoping SJU gets-to or wins the Stagg Bowl. Two teams in the quarterfinals or one team in the semifinals would be chill with me. If Bethel and SJU somehow miraculously both make the semis, then "Go Bethel." No exclamation point though.

Ha. I can't give any more than that to the Tommies, that's for sure.  It's this sort of uneasy alliance that held the Allies together against the Nazis. I'll let you guess who I reckon the commie b******s are this analogy.

I know this is a family friendly site, but we don't have to be afraid to use the B word around here.

Ha!  Ok, I was laughing out loud to no one and looking the fool on the morning train (now I have Sheena E echoing around my noggin).

Seriously, would they hire a guy with one year as OC at the D3 level?

They may not select him, but they would be foolish not to consider him. If the success is sustained Heckendorf is gone in the next 3 years. He has a world of opportunity in front of him. Look at Killian with UST. Brilliant play-callers and offensive system guys are a valued commodity in this era of football. I wouldn't be surprised to see Craig Bohl offer him a position assistant position as well. If you are an SJU fan you hope his knowledge and system has permeated among the staff and team.

I'll guess, and hope, that Josh Bungum is a quick study and has a great working relationship with Heckendorf and is soaking in all that he can, and will combine that with the good (and only the good) that he learned from the OC's he played under at SJU, and be in Collegeville for a long time.

I believe there is a high probability of this happening.
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!
