If you look at who has open weeks to start the 2019 season, weeks 1 and 2, we have a few options to choose from in trying to bulk up that nonconference schedule. We'll see if anyone takes us on.

I love how everyone on here talks like UMHB is a joke. Pretty interesting. Perhaps we shouldn't even play this weekend. How bout this, our guys just put on tuxedos and serve Miller's BBQ to the Johnnies on the 50 yard line. That seems to fit what y'all think UMHB is capable of.

Very little respect from the Johnnie faithful. I wonder how Coach Gagliardi would respond? For some reason, I feel like he would be respectful, and he would expect that same attitude from the fans.
Watch out for the wreckingCRU defense!!

The only thing I see being questioned is umhb's schedule, haven't seen anything written bad about the team itself.  And "Coach Gagliardi" would be wondering why they are even wasting the money to send SJU all the way down to Texas to get their collective asses kicked,,,

Couldn't have more respect for UMHB. Very impressive string of years playing at such a high level.

Looking forward to seeing UMHB in person on Saturday. Also liking the 72 degree forecast.

I think you're misinterpreting the Johnnie faithful.  We don't get worked up over teams that aren't worth getting worked up over.  We all know the challenge that faces the Johnnies on Saturday, and we're excited to see how our boys stack up against a perennial title contender and team we've never faced.

Also, there is no correlation between the SJU team's attitudes and SJU fan's attitudes.  I'm one of the few SJU posters that played, and I haven't had on a helmet and pads in almost 16 years.  :o

Ok... UHMB are a very, very good team and extreme challenge for any team, especially the Johnnies...

... and will represent our greatest victory yet this year!

Also, it’s important to remember that the banter on this board had been forged in the red hot crucible of MIAC rivalries, including the most heated in D3. The Johnnie/Tommie rivalry in particular burns with an intensity entirely unjustified and utterly disrespectful.  It’s not personal, it’s just that we’re better at everything we do.

It's been 37 years since I last wore pads at Bethel. If y'all git by the Johnnies, then you might have to worry 'bout us old geezer Royal fans bustin' yer chops.

If the Johnnies win the Walnut & Bronze, they will have (likely) beaten
Bethel on the road (done),
UMHB on the road,
UWW on the road, and
UMU in the Stagg.

That is commendable.

It's the playoff games where UMHB plays their first string the entire game where the rubber meets the road.  The last few years their offensive output has been slashed the deeper they've gone in the playoffs.  Granted, this is generally true for all teams as they advance, but for UMHB it's pretty telling.

Interesting.  You inspired me to go have a look.  Just eyeballing the numbers it looks like:

* 2017, about 50 point in-conference scoring average (even with HSU holding them down), low 20's out of conference (against the big boys)
* 2016, high 50's, low teens (but enough to win it all)
* 2015, low 60's, mid 30's
* 2014, high 60's, high 20's

Isn't that something.  How do the Johnnies compare?  Is this an anomaly or every team faces the same struggle?

* 2017, low 40's, teens
* 2016, low 50's, teens
* 2016, 40's, teens

Obviously, the Johnnies have had a similar pattern so I can't say it's too unique to UHMB.  But the difference is that the Johnnies this year have a new offensive scheme.  And this year the conference vs the big boys (BU, UST, I would say TM but it was a thumping and would distort the numbers too much) is a different story.

* 2018, about 50, high 30's (put TM in and there's no difference)

My conclusion, we could be looking at something special.  I hope the boys are focused.

One would sure hope the scoring averages go down a bit come playoff time, but if it drops a ton then that leads me to believe one or both of the following factors:
1.  you're running up the score on lesser opponents in the regular season ala St Glenn that can't be duplicated in the playoffs
2.  your regular season opponents drastically pale in comparison to those seen in the playoffs

If you scores don't drop much, then that could point too:
1.  your regular season competition was similar to the playoff competition as a whole
2.  you really held back in the regular season and could have drilled people much worse than you did

I'm too lazy to go thru 25 years of Mount scores, but here's the last few:
2017:  regular season = 63.1 / playoffs = 38.2
2016:  regular season = 49.2 / playoffs = 37.0
2015:  regular season = 53.8 / playoffs = 52.4
2014:  regular season = 60.8 / playoffs = 54.0

UMHB's offensive numbers this year have been great, last year not so much and 2 years ago was very good but the offense is not why we have reached a new level of play during the time.

In that time our defense is what has carried us, in 2016 we gave up 14.6 per playoff game, 5.6 in 2017, and this year for the season we have given up 6.6 points per game.

Offense might get all the attention but most likely if we can win this Saturday it will be because we hold you guys down to a point where we don't have to have our video game like offensive numbers.

Agreed. I believe the obvious difference was the departure of the UWW coaching staff, clearing the way for the next team up.

I think SJU would have a better time beating UWW or Bethel.... I'm not sure they could beat UMU or UMHB.... I watched you guys vs. Whitworth and although you pretty much dominate the game... I wasn't impressed with your lines or running back... plus your pass defense isn't much to write home about....  :'(

I think almost every Johnnie fan thinks it'd be pretty big upset if they win Saturday. That despite the Johnnies being a team who have dominated all season. That's pretty respectful of the Cru.

And as Stanbob pointed out, since John thought every opponent was going to be a nightmare for the Johnnies, he'd surely bemoan their chances of victory. But he could also tell the story of another time SJU faced an incredibly impressive team from Texas for the first time ever: Prairie View in 1963, a team loaded with future NFL players, yet the Johnnies beat them to win national title. Maybe there's a little Bernie Beckman magic lingering.

OzJohnnie

fury, I agree with you, obviously.  It's beyond obvious that UHMB are favourites.  They are as tough as anything that the Jays have encountered in years.  Travelling to TX means that the Johnnies are one or two score underdogs.  At least on or two scores.  They will need to play out of their skin on both offense and defense, particularly defense, to have a chance of victory.

That being said, why is it so controversial to point out that UHMB have been raised on a diet of Texas creampuffs, candied almonds and maraschino cherries?
