Barber will be back???  He's gotta be damn near 30!  ;D

As mentioned, Brinker will be missed, but also Kalina.  I was really impressed with his play this year.  Also, Max Jackson will be gone--big loss.  Arrgh.  I don't know if the Johnnies will win a game next year.

To quote John, though, "Every year, we replace irreplaceable guys."

Yeah, Barber is listed as a junior.  He'll for sure be a "senior" next year!!! :)  Spose it's possible he won't come back.

Johnnies lose quite a bit, but they do have some/a few weapons returning.  Gillach and both TE's leave, plus Essler, 4 of their top 5 receivers, but Eckhoff, Van Erp and Blake Patrick are back which is over 1000 yds and 9 TD's.  3 RB's who started are back - Barber, Udoibok and Nick Jensen (FB), along with Trost who showed good in his limited chances (had a 100 yd rushing game if I'm not mistaken).  There's some hope.

On D, all 4 starting LB's back I think, 2 starting DB's.  Brinker's loss will hurt, but FR Wozniak showed good backing him up.  Borgeson up front is back.

So, the cupboard isn't bare.
Eckhoff is a SR. he will not be back. Blake Patrick has had flashes but needs more consistency.
As of now they're on DOUBLE SECRET Probation!

There's a great GIF of this somewhere out in the intertubes.

Aside from Gillach, I thought they all showed potential but needed a little polishing.  I have confidence that they'll be fine at WR.  Whatever Gillach did over the summer needs to be repeated by this group!

Biggest losses and hardest to replace IMO: Gillach, Brinker, Jackson, Kalina, Streit and Auger.

How much does SJU bring back in 2019?

Enough to resume their rightful place as SJ2 in the MIAC.

Will be interesting to see how Erdmann evolves with new/different weapons to work with. Here's hoping he takes the Perra senior step, where he looks dominant early against a bunch of nobodies and then completely and spectacularly falls apart as the season goes on.

The Johnnies were also extremely fortunate to have the same five starting linemen healthy and in the lineup every week. That doesn't happen every year.

The Johnnies stayed remarkably healthy all year, a thing that amazed me.  Aside from Brinker ailing at the end of the year, I can't recall any significant injuries--Auger went down briefly but only missed a game or two.

Same for UST, aside from Trettel missing the year, unless I just didn't monitor the o-line closely enough. I don't think we had any major injuries there (or even starters miss multiple games) and the defense basically stayed intact too, other than Franzese, who was mostly getting torched when he was in there (maybe he wasn't 100% healthy?).

The one guy I've got my eye on going into next year for SJU is this Henry Troast fella.  We caught a few glimpses and I think we liked what we saw--a lot. Seems like he's got some lots of speed. Maybe we can have a true lead running back in 2019 instead of doing it by committee?

4/5 of the O-Line being back is also going to help the newer skill guys get their feet under them. I think the O-Line, which did stay remarkably healthy, improved a bunch this season. Having a veteran and talented O-Line is a great luxury for any offense. Hats off to a great coaching job to MN coaching legend Jim Mader, the O-Line coach, who has apparently retired after the UMBH game. Mike Magnuson, SJU '90, has been serving as Jim's apprentice for the last couple of years, so the coaching for that position group appears to be in good hands.

I actually hoped we would see Trost in this last game. He did make a nice tackle on a kickoff. He could be used as a WR as well, I would think. Maybe he could do a Clark and be used in certain situations as a DB also.

I'm not fretting over next year's offense. I think Erdmann's the type of QB and in this system where we're going to be able to sort of plug guys in and still be really good. He's at that level. Not that we aren't losing a ton of receiving talent. We are. But I'd rather have this QB coming back with unproven receivers than this year's receivers coming back with unproven QB. In other words, while you guys worry about 2019, I'm fretting about SJU QB situation of 2020.

Sidebar: Jackson's dad, Jeff, coached at NHREG when I was at JWP and we had some great games against them in 1990 and 1991 that we won. (possibly because I had quit playing in 1989). What I didn't realize till just recently was how young he was. He graduated from Gustavus, where he played, in 1990. Took over NHREG few months later. Pretty impressive what he did there too, then obviously went on to bigger schools.
