Oz, happy 2019 to you, before most of us have experienced it.

Haven't run across any Melbourne celebrations, but the fireworks in Sydney were quite spectacular.

Sydney Harbour is a spectacular setting and impossible to top.  Although Sydney is a busy, noisey place, the harbour is the most spectacularly beautiful setting for a city I've ever seen.  Melbourne delivers the typical big city display with fireworks from all the buildings giving the 360 effect if you're in one of the city squares.
... and the Sydney Harbour Bridge banner displayed:
HAPPY NEW YEAR 2018!    :)

As we say in Melbourne: Sydney is a beautiful place.  Shame about the people.

Happy New Year! I've resolved to act a bit humbler this year, which has me thinking about what constitutes humility. I bet the Johnnies can offer some useful insights on this topic.

I'm sure many Johnnies, after years of working long hours down at the plant and making due with far less than your average Tommie, have been able to build a small savings. It must be tempting to spend one's hard-earned money on improving the social condition, but in so doing one doesn't want to be seen as lacking humility.

Couple quick questions: Are Johnnies who live more lavishly than most of their fellow graduates (e.g. those who opt for a double-wide rather than your standard trailer home) viewed as less humble? If so, why?

Chapter 7 of The Rule of St. Benedict covers the topic quite adequately.

Wow, I am humbled.  I had never read this beyond looking at the title page, much less knowing what's inside it.

Am I missing something? Where's the part about Johnnies who splash out on double-wide trailers? Maybe that's covered by one having to "beware of evil desires."

You mean that you are not familiar with Chapter 40 on the proper amount of adult beverages?

Used to hear from one monk that the Rule originally cited "one hemina of wine" a day.

And the beauty, that monk said, was that hemina was never precisely defined.  ;D

One of my campus jobs was hospitality and back in those days, the abbey brought in truckloads of grapes to make its own wine for sacraments, celebrations and everyday drinking. It was known as "Abbey Gas" and packed quite a punch.

QuoteHowever, with due regard for the infirmities of the sick, we believe that a half bottle of wine a day is sufficient for each... The superior will determine when local conditions, work or the summer heat indicates the need for a greater amount.

It seems that it's a good idea to make friends with the boss when you're living in a monastery.
