Hey old buddy. I'm still around. Just that funny time of year. Still go with Milwaukee's Best, it's cheap, but also have an occasional Bud Light. I always read your posts. I haven't had much to say. Even now, I'm lost for words. Chat with ya later.   ;D  🍺 ⛄️

Old Auggie,

My brush with fame this weekend:  We were at the STMA "The Brawl" Dual Tournament this weekend.  It's touted as the biggest youth dual tournament in the nation--48 teams!  Anyhow, I found a seat for one of our matches, and I ended up sitting next to Gopher coach Brandon Eggum.  We had a nice talk about the Gophers and about youth wrestling.  His son wrestles for the Stillwater youth program.

We ended up winning Division B of the "Up & Comers" bracket, beating Cannon Falls, Thief River Falls, ROCORI, and Mound West Tonka and losing to Saint Peter.  It was fun tournament with some great matches.  We needed to win our final match to with the championship, and our guy came up with a big pin.  The boys were thrilled!

A tradition unrivaled...

Looks like Augsburg hasn't won the Battle of the Burgs since 2010 and Wartburg has 7 of the last 8 national championships.  It's also been 5 years since the Gophers beat the Hawkeyes.  Who's going to beat their Iowa rival first?

That is fantastic! Your son is on Eggum's radar now, right?.  You guys beat some quality programs that day. Congrats!

Augsburg won the National Ch. in 2015 but I am feeling confident that this is the year. The next 2 years really. Wartburg has a great team but based on the talent on the Auggies this year, it is time to bring it home this year and next.

As much disdain as I have for Auggie Tech, I'd sure rather see them win than Wartburg!

As for the Gophers, they've really gotten some top recruits in the past two years.  I think they'll topple Iowa in the next couple of years.

A colleague in Sydney just sent a photo from his home which backs up onto some bush land. He's got a Sydney Funnel Web spider, the world's deadliest arachnid, making a nest in his back yard.  It's been a summer of deadly critters this year.

And I looked up scorpions in Australia because someone mentioned them a few pages ago and I said there weren't any here. Turns out I was wrong. There are some but they aren't dangerous unlike elsewhere, go figure, so no one thinks about them. I've never seen one so I assume they live out in the arid areas.

Is the Funnel Web more dangerous than the Red Back, a relative of the Black Widow we have in the USA?

Mos' def'n'ly.  The redback hurts like hell but will only possibly kill very young children or the infirm.  Most people can get by with an ice pack, some aspirin and a bit of complaining about the painful bite (although I recommend a visit to the doctor for a redback bite.  Why take a chance?).

The funnel-web is dangerous.  And it's got big fangs - when you get bit you know it.  If you get bit then apply a pressure bandage straight away and head for the doctor's office.  It takes about three days to kill you, though, so there's plenty of time to get the antivenom (no one has died since 1980 when the antivenom was produced).  Again, only a small number of people (about 1 in 10) will develop fatal symptoms but why take the chance?  Interestingly, the funnel-web venom is particularly effective against humans.  Dogs and cats aren't really affected at all.

Dang, that is one cold snap back home.  I've got to say that I don't miss the January kick-in-the-guts that always comes along.  Just when you start to hope that winter is going to finish, Mother Nature says, "No so fast there, buddy.  I've got a little chill for you."  -52 wind chill up in Rapids at the moment.  I'd rather poke myself in the eye than walk out into that wind.
