Bill Buckner died today and has been mentioned on every sports show I watched.

They all also pointed out the game 6 error and apologized for bringing it up, so to speak.

The guy was a helluva baseball player.  Just say that and leave it be.
You got that right.

His cameo in "Curb", and Larry David going with the script where he redeemed himself was legendary.

MIAC's #TomToss has precedent

Quote from: WikipediaIn 1939, [John] Roning took over at Gustavus Adolphus College where he served as athletic director, football, basketball and track coach.[2] During his tenure as football head coach, Roning led the Gusties to an overall record of 17 wins, five losses and one tie (17–5–1).  He led the Gusties to the 1940 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) championship; however, the school was suspended from the MIAC for the 1941 season for its perceived "overemphasis" on collegiate athletics.

Quote from: Milwaukee Journal April 7, 1941
Gustavus Adolphus which was suspended Saturday from the state college conference, Monday face possible loss of it's coach, John Roning.  Roning has been offered the job of athletic director and head coach at Augustana College, Rock Island, Ill., but president O.J. Johnson said he hoped Roning would remain as athletic director and head coach.

Gustavus was suspended by the conference council of faculty managers for one year effective next fall, for overemphasizing athletic activities. It will be forced to schedule non-conference opponents for a year.

Gustavus also forfeited the conference's hockey championship to St. Thomas for using an ineligible player.  The Gusties also won the football title last fall.  Johnson said the school had "no recriminations at this time and no protests to make" and that Gustavus expected to be readmitted to the conference after the year's suspension.

UST didn't break any rules, unlike the rotten Gusties.

Also have to factor in that getting a one year suspension and getting kicked out of the conference entirely is apples and oranges.

Has it been mentioned anywhere when STU will determine which route it wants to take? I would think that will impact future recruiting quite a bit.

With 2 years until TomToss actually happens, I'd imagine they will spend at least the first year taking an in-depth look at all options and fundraising needs and possibilities. I wouldn't expect any kind of announcement in the next 12 months unless they announce a fundraising campaign to move to another division.

It should be noted that UST already has a fundraising campaign in the works. I've heard talk of a $1B fundraising goal to build the endowment. I don't think athletics have been prioritized as part of the campaign, but whatever UST does on this front it's going to be made a priority as part of the campaign. I think a lot of new donors, including those outside the region, are going to be interested in supporting UST athletics given what's happened.

As an outsider looking in (UWEC Blugold grad), I feel going D2 would be a better fit for St. Thomas than coming over to the WIAC or even down to the ARC. I did research a bit and here is what I came up with as to where St. Thomas would fit in athletically with the rest of the WIAC, if they did indeed come our way. Posted this over on the WIAC forum, but thought I would post here as well to get feedback from this side of the Mississippi.

MEN"S SPORTS

FOOTBALL - Very Good program that would strengthen an already strong D3 conference. Would definitely be a more difficult road from them to make the post season than the MIAC. Sure Bethel squeezed them out this year, but is it repeatable? The WIAC would be one tough gauntlet of a season to go through, and I think would most likely end up with a 2nd place 2 loss teams. Anyone with more knowledge than me on the playoff selection process, but how many 2 loss teams get an at large bid? Adding St. Thomas would alleviate the current need for WIAC teams to find 3 OOC teams to schedule.

CROSS COUNTRY - Pretty Good add to the conference. Finished 30th out of 32 teams at Nationals with WIAC teams EC & Stout finishing ahead of them.

BASKETBALL - Very Strong Add, Beat SP, RF & LaCrosse this past season. Made it to D3 Sweet 16.

HOCKEY - Biggest benefit to WIAC here than any other. Gives the WIAC 6 teams and an automatic bid to the conference champion, which doesn't necessarily happen now. Could pave the road for WIAC to get 2 bids instead of just 1 for post season play.

BASEBALL - Fair add, Nothing really gained or lost here.

TRACK & FIELD - Nothing really added here. Recently finished 31st at Nationals, 1 point ahead of Stout. 5 other WIAC teams finished ahead of them including my Blugolds who took home the National Champioinship.

TENNIS - WIAC currently has 3 teams I believe playing as charter members with a conference out East. Not sure adding a forth team to the WIAC does anything here.

SWIMMING seems to be an ok add, and GOLF I did not loo at.

WOMEN'S SPORTS

I feel we gain more here from a competition standpoint.

CROSS COUNTRY - OK Add, no real added benefit or loss.

VOLLEYBALL - good add, split with a handful of WIAC teams during the regular season and lost to UWEC in the Midwest Regionals.

SOCCER - Good Add, Beat 3 WIAC teams during regular season before losing rematch via shoot out to UWL in the NCAA Second Round

BASKETBALL - Great Add, advanced to D3 semifinals

HOCKEY - Great Add, Played in NCAA D3 Frozen Four

SOFTBALL - Very Good Add, Defeated UWEC in Regional to advance to NCAA D3 National Tournament, #1 seed, but lost first 2 games.

SWIMMING & TRACK both seem to be OK. No real upgrade or downgrade.

Did not look at Tennis or Golf.

Feel free to add your thoughts.

Pros of Cons of staying D3 and joining the WIAC
Pros: Gets to continue playing St. John's
Cons: Wisconsin stinks

Pardon AO's language. He went to Northwestern.

Wisconsin sucks.

Supposing UST decides to go D2, if they get their application in before the next deadline (February, I think?), they could get accepted in July 2020 and go through Year 1 in 2020–21 while still in the MIAC, then become eligible in 2023–24.

Since UST is a quarter mile east of the Mississippi, maybe they'd be a good fit in the WIAC...

Did not look at Tennis or Golf.

The WIAC is okay for women's tennis and women's golf, with seven teams in the former and eight in the latter. But the conference doesn't sponsor men's golf, since only Eau Claire and Stout have it. So UST would likely end up in Pool B. To snag a Pool B or C berth in men's golf, a team generally has to be ranked in the top 15 or 20, which UST often is; this year they were ranked 31st but won the MIAC auto bid.

Clearly as a football conference, the WIAC would be dominant but also a potent hockey conference if they invite UST. I can hear from here the 10 key calculators and the accounting departments on both sides of the river (St.Croix) with blurred and frenzied fingers seeking the answer to which option works best from a financial standpoint.

Silly AO and jamto. You guys forgot the Minnesota Nice.  ;D

And I'm counting on both you guys coming over to be in my box for the SJU v UW Stout game. Jam has to scout his future conference and AO your squad is in Iowa so no excuses.

Pop, food and tik provided. Any regular poster just DM me if interested.

Edit: OldAuggie you've got ties here so I'm definitely planning on you.

Wrong Northwestern, BDB. AO is from the D3 Northwestern in St. Paul, not the NAIA Northwestern out in the cornfields north of Sioux City.
