The MIAC started out the season at 7 and 2, which is the number I predicted last week, but two of the teams surprised me. Augsburg won and the Johnnies struggled. Because the Johnnies struggled, their game took much of the luster off of the Cobber game where they lost in OT. I won't be surprised, and those reading this shouldn't be either, but Concordia is a team that other teams shouldn't discount lightly this year.

This coming week only 7 teams are in action, as both St. Thomas and St. John's have their second non-conference games during their scheduled "bye" weeks.

Augsburg hosts Concordia Wisconsin who also won last week. However, the Falcons beat arguably, the worst team in D3, while the Auggies won by beating a team that has been in the middle of their conference. The Auggies should not struggle too much chalking up a win at home.

Bethel is on the road this week with the first of three MIAC-WIAC games scheduled for the upcoming weekend. They are headed to River Falls, where the Falcons are coming off a win against Minnesota-Morris. Bethel looked pretty good this past week against Simpson, and unless they shoot themselves in the foot, should leave Wisconsin with another win in this young season.

Carleton is also headed to Wisconsin this weekend but headed to non-WIAC Lawrence College to take on the Vikings, who posted a win against Grinnell last week. The Knights looked good against Macalester, and I don't have much doubt that they will also do well against Lawrence, coming away with their second win for the season.

Concordia is the second team playing a WIAC opponent this week, as they host Whitewater. It is my hope that the Cobbers haven't lost their confidence with the OT loss last week against La Crosse. I do think that this again has the makings of becoming the game of the week, as it should be a hard fought close game that could go either way.

Gustavus is the third MIAC team to do battle with a WIAC team, playing Stout. This should be a win by the Blue Devils, as the Gusties don't look to have as much horse power as the Johnnies did this past week.

Hamline traveling down the street to Macalester is kind of a head scratcher, as both teams lost last week and did not look good in doing that. This is the annual rivalry game for the Old Paint Bucket. I don't know which team will lose to the other.

St. Olaf traveling down to Luther is the last game of the weekend. This match-up is becoming a rivalry game between two Lutheran schools in different conferences. The Norse are coming off a long road trip loss to Whittier. The Oles should be able to notch another win on the blue playing field down in Decorah.

Luther is St. Olaf's oldest rival, and it is the most important rivalry for several of the older alumni.  Carleton is a newer rivalry which is hard to imagine.

Carleton beating Mac is always good win.  I know Mac isn't very good, but you always take a win.  Lawrence is coached by Rob McCarthy who was previously at Carleton after a long stint at St. Olaf as the defensive coordinator under Meidt and others.

I imagine the rivalry is linked to the schools' shared Norwegian heritage, right?  St. Olaf's web page shows football results back to 1918, which is pretty cool.  Per that page, Luther was a frequent football opponent prior to St. Olaf joining the MWC in the early 1950s, but doesn't appear on the schedule again until 1981, when the now-annual non-conference matchup was resurrected.  Is there a traveling trophy?

Baseball goes back even further if my memory is correct. The rivalry extends beyond athletics as they are similar schools. Luther has a strong music program. I've worked several camps at Luther and loved it. The campus is beautiful, and the people are great.  I can't say anything  negative about Luther or Decorah.

I want to say the rivalry has a name, but I don't think there is a trophy.

Luther and Olaf have a ton in common. Norwegian heritage, ELCA schools, proud music traditions, upper Midwest location. I’d imagine they compete for a lot of students against each other. And the football games are usually really good games.

No idea. But I know the one thing I want to do after fall camp on my day off is move other people's crap.

QuoteAn optimistic Gusty coach: "Alright now guys we have a lot of game left! Let's go now!"

It's 28-0 with multiple dropped passes, a safety and a blocked punt returned for a TD. You're right coach... there is a lot of game left.  :-X

A defeated Gustie player: "Guys.. this is called getting s*** pumped 101 and class is in session."

I'm still laughing. 31-0 Royals.

QuoteCU Coach after a personal foul: "D***** Noah, why?! What the h*** are you doing? We went from a TFL to 15 yards of bull****!"

There's a lot of people I'd rather be than Noah right now...

The MIAC has been trying to figure out how to do that all season.

So will U$T eventually just absorb St. Kate's and put the nursing school over there or are they going to build their own facilities?

I believe the mid-term plan is to house the School of Health in purpose-built facilities on the Minneapolis campus. Announcements about major donations that will endow the school and finance new facilities are forthcoming.

Officials aren't talking about this on the record (and the official announcement implies this is not the case), but the long-term plan is to establish a School of Medicine that will complement the School of Health. UST would likely partner with the Mayo Medical School or establish an independent school in collaboration with another healthcare provider in the Twin Cities. Regardless of which way it goes, they'd still need non-clinical teaching and administrative space on a UST campus. I imagine this would lead to an expansion of the Minneapolis campus.

I am a WIAC diehard supporter but wanted to stop over here to get some thoughts. I am heading up to the UWRF vs Bethel this weekend. I pick one game each weekend to go to and this is the one I picked this week. Bethel lost most of their starters from what I am seeing while UWRF retrun most of theirs. It was a 5 point game last year at Bethel I am curious why everyone thinks this one will be a blow out?

Also, I was at the UWL vs CM head game. I thought CM had their chances to win all day long. UWL has one of the top defenses in the WIAC. I was very impressed with how physical CM was in the run game and did not have much trouble with UWL passing attack. They will be a fun team to follow this year! Thanks everyone!

Welcome to the better side of the St. Croix, Brad! If, you mean by blow-out, that Bethel wins by at least two touchdowns, then yes, it could be a blow-out. Bethel pretty much chewed up Simpson last week. I know that River Falls won handedly at Minneosta-Morris, 45 to 7, last week. Bethel is no Minnesota-Morris. There is a reason they are still ranked 10th in the country. It will be a good hard fought game, but I would be very surprised if it is close.

14 and a half points isn't a blowout around the MIAC, that's a close game.  River Falls did play Bethel tough last year, but that might have been their best game of the year.  They couldn't compete with anyone in the WIAC except Stout and Eau Claire.
